www.bavauto.com -- In this How-To DIY video series (Part-1 and Part-2) we will be replacing a typical BMW clutch and flywheel. For more details on this DIY, see our Tech Blog at www.blog.bavauto.com/go/clutchrepair . These videos show the full removal, replacement and reassembly of the self-adjusting clutch (SAC) and dual-mass flywheel, special instructions that MUST be followed in the installation of the self-adjusting clutch, failure modes of the dual-mass flywheel and finally, installation of the UUC lightweight flywheel and performance clutch. We will also install the UUC Short Shift Kit and DSSR. See the separate DIY video for the shifter install at www.blog.bavauto.com/go/shortshift . All of the parts shown in this DIY series are available at Bavarian Autosport. Visit our online store at www.bavauto.com or call or knowledgeable agents at 800-535-2002.

Hi, Enjoyed your video it's amazing to watch how a clutch and flywheel is disassembled and how its put back together and the effort applied. I'm getting my e39 clutch & flywheel replaced and just was searching up videos of how its done and I liked how you showed exactly how it is done and everything explained perfectly. I just subscribed thankyou.

You guys are awesome! I've been a professional mechanic for ten years and I have never used anti-seize on seal's I always use a little grease, assembly lube or whatever fluid or oil suits the application. I'm always happy to learn new tricks of the trade though thanks.

Loved this video. It really helped me with my clutch replacement. My clutch kit, from Advanced Auto, did not include the same elements prescribed in the video. Unfortunately, I can't wait for the parts because of my new job, I have to have this wrapped up by tomorrow. I do want to get one of the UUC lightweight flywheels in the future, so I may redo this job again in 25,000 miles (My new job puts a lot of miles on my car). Anyway, thank you.

We do have a general shock and strut install DIY on our Tech Blog (blog.bavauto.com). Once you check in at the blog, just search for "shock strut DIY". The procedures shown for the rear shocks will be very close to the same for your Z4. One difference is that the access to the nuts on the upper mounts requires removal of some of the convertible top trim parts, in the trunk. We can help you with this, just call us at 800-535-2002.

Graham S - We could not reply directly to your comment as it was entered via Google - You can use a specific floor transmission jack. These are available from Harbor Freight and others. They have a large saddle and tie-down straps or chains similar to the high-lift jack we used. Other than this, a common floor jack can be made to work by using ratchet straps around the transmission and the jack's saddle. this is not nearly as secure as a transmission jack, but with care, can work quite well.

Very professional way explained in video, thank you. I have a question, my BMW 320d from 2001 is 5.gear model i bought from Swiss second hand. The clutch pedal point is bit to high and if i don't sleep it slowly it might vibrate or car jump in the back, sometimes after i drive several km clutch pedal falls in real driving point, fells fine changing gears while accelerating, but it wan't stay longer then about 30.sec, i have open mask to check for pedals, it's all clear no leaks from cylinders at all and all things are in place. After i saw your excellent video you made, you mention self adjusting clutch...it it possible my car have this kind of self adjusting clutch and is unable to adjust or is it cylinders got air on it. Underneath my car is all the plastic and heat shields intact, it seem never been in service for more than oil change, so can you tell me what could be the problem with my clutch pedal please?

The fork clutch pivot ball which is made of plastic is very important to replace guys, they either brake or melt, you can go with the dealers plastic or aftermarket brass type which is better. Is less then 13dlls. Thank you!

I was having a vibration at the pedal for a long time after having installed this new clutch, then today the the clutch release bearing has broken... Do you have an idea of what can gave me vibration at the pedal ? Frequency is synchronized with the engine rpm, gear engaged or not leave the same feeling... Ideas ?

What lubrication compounds are you using for the rear main seals as well the tranny seals? Just normal antiseize? Also I was reading through the Bentley manual and it mentions having to torque the output flange but in two stages; also provided are stage 1 and 2 torque specs. What exactly does that mean? Torque to the first spec, back off and torque to the final spec?

What is the benefit of using the lightweight flywheel compared to the dual mass flywheel? I've read that there can be more vibration in neutral and lower RPMs, and makes it a difficult situation for street use.

@bavarianautosport

We can't be sure about your specific case, without driving the car, knowing the vehicle and parts details, etc, but your issue may be due to the unsprung clutch disc, which may be transmitting more engine vibrations.

You didn't mention what model you have. However, most BMW models do have a 30mm output flange nut. Some models have a lock-ring around the nut. Have you looked closely to see if you have the lock ring still inplace? Is the nut as much as 6mm larger than the 30mm socket (as noted in the prior reply)?

Thanks for the video. How does the price of this replacement kit compare with the OEM dual mass flywheel? Also - I was told that the DMF was intended to absorb some torque and that a solid flywheel could make gear change rough. Have you had any experience with ford Mondeos?

Including all of the set-up for the video and photos, re-takes, etc (in other words, the full video production process), we had about 12 hours into the job. It's certainly viable to do the job at home in two full days. Having the lift and air tools, we could have done this all in one work day if we were not producing a DIY.

Hi, Great video, can you tell me the symptoms of a failing dual mass flywheel. I have a BMW 320d E90 2005. 116k. Getting a lot of vibration under the car (not through the steering wheel) when accelerating at 2k/3k rpm typically in 3 / 4 /5th gears this is under the car, rear wheels are balanced, using the clutch i have no issue, thats working great.. Thanks
@bavarianautosport
@bavarianautosport 10 жыл бұрын
Driveline vibration can certainly be a symptom of a well-worn dual-mass flywheel. However, we would also suggest that you consider the flex-disc and/or the driveshaft center support bearing in consideration of your symptoms. The most common dual-mass symptom would be a lot of driveline slack feel, such as jerking between acceleration and deceleration.
