I wanted to love the ÖBB Nightjet. This overnight sleeper train is supposed to be the future of rail travel in Europe. But this trip to Amsterdam did not end the way I expected.

These sleeping-cars are currently the oldest on the nightjet system. Built 1975 as T2S with 17 small two-bed compartments, five of them rebuilt 1999 with 11 larger three-bed compartments for ÖBB. In 2016 these were retired from regular service (replaced by newer WLABmz 173.1 from Germany) and sold to BahnTouristikExpress. For the train Zürich - Amsterdam they were hired back and given another (mostly technical) refurbishment. That explains why they aren't equipped with showers and there are no deluxe compartments in this train. Occasionally they are replaced by a more modern MUn car which does have a very spacious deluxe compartment, a public shower and a smoother ride, but that's rare ... Ending the train in Frankfurt/M, no idea why that was done, perhaps a technical problem with some of the rolling stock. It's clearly a mistake of the staff to forget returning the tickets to the passengers in Frankfurt. (You could have asked for it but being awakened from deep sleep you can't be held responsible for that!) Also it would be nice to have breakfast vouchers for the ICE, just in case .... Another problem is that the SBB doesn't know of the problem and you as a passenger would have to prove it (just show them this video, it should be plenty of proof). It's true that you get compensation from where you bought the ticket; in my case it took some time but was eventually settled satisfyingly. Contacting ÖBB about it ... seems to be more difficult because they hide behind chatbots and an extra-fee telephone number. That's a frustrating thing with a lot of companies recently.

Markus, I like your soothing voice. It is almost better than my usual Korean cat spa pre-sleep ASMR. From what I see, the OBB night train really sucks. When I was a student and traveled regularly from Hamburg to Zurich and back, I had a room with my own toilet and shower (City Night Line).

I take a year ago nightjet from Innsbruck to Graz ( I think it came from Munich) I pay for 3 people cabin for me and my father ( the cabin firc2 people was sold out ) and we have inside the cabin private sink and shower. The best thing that in 7 am I was already in Graz banhof

To be fair, ÖBB is getting brand new sleepers and couchettes, so the product should improve in the future.

Try a night train from Helsinki to Lapland for a change. You'll be surprised by the price, the comfort and the punctuality.

Hey Markus, great video again. But I have to say I wouldn’t want to travel with you. You seem to have bad luck every time😂. From been kicked out of the Nightjet, to destroyed baggage by Lufthansa, Ticket failures by Star Alliance and huge delays by Deutsche Bahn I assume you must be cursed.

Yes, there is a bit of a curse. But I also do film more trips than I publish. If nothing interesting happens, I often don't produce a video.

My experience with the Nightjet from Vienna to Cologne wasn't great either, being woken up by noisy shunting near Nuremberg and subsequently an odd police inspection in the middle of the night. I'm flying again next time!

You know, the police has right to inspect any train at any time, and it doesn not depend on operator yeah? The shunting IN (not near) Nürnberg is happenning every night for 7 years already, in both ways.

@@markoobid2005 I never blamed the police inspection on the operator, it just demonstrates that the advertised comfort and convenience of overnight rail is a lie, at least in Europe. As for the shunting, completely unnecessary, just the operator inconveniencing passangers for the sake of cost-cutting.

@@stinooke I took the same train in the other direction, from Brussels to Vienna. Fell asleep in Cologne and woke up in Passau, didn't even feel the shunting in Nürnberg, the sleeping car (Comfortline type) was amazingly smooth and most of the time I didn't feel movement at all.

@@markoobid2005 I was physically ill the rest of the day I arrived lol. I didn't think the suspension on the Comfortline cars was very good, no better than on a standard intercity coach. I did however appreciate the on-board service, the steward was very professional and dedicated.

Take them to court and show them your vlog. The whole point of night trains is that you being able to sleep.

While I am a lawyer by training, that should not be necessary. A simple refund will be enough.

@@MarkusTravels Yeah but that is super infuriating to be woken up in the middle of night to change trains. If they won't refund you then sue them in small claims court.
