Humanists UK celebrants Rachael Meyer, Ruth Brown-Shepherd, and Deborah Hooper (Director of Ceremonies at Humanists UK) featured as part of a BBC One - Look North (Yorkshire) broadcast on Humanist Ceremonies™, their growing popularity, and increasing demand for legal recognition in England and Wales.

Why wouldn’t they be legally binding? Honest question. Does the church have the only power to sanctify Union in the UK. Is there some sort of Justice of the Peace that can be contracted?

As I understand it - If you had a civil ceremony (rather than a humanist ceremony) the registrar would conduct it and would also register the marriage. If you are married by a priest he can (usually) also complete the register for you, but if you have a humanist ceremony you would also need to pay for a separate registrar to do that part in England and Wales.

You can have an ancient greek wedding in Greece and it's legal also.

Why use any legally binding aspects at all? Anything that governs (that ungoverned body of people we call governments, religious orders which are also ungoverned) you and I has first to be accepted by you and I as an authority over us. All we need do is not recognize that authority... problem solved. If one needs a government (external mind control; from the Latin: gubernare - mente) that's a choice one would make for ones self only, to force anyone else to be included against their will (and good sense) amounts to nothing less than slavery. We don't need anyone to control us or our thoughts.
