0:50 by god that news segment is barely transmittable by todays standards, suppose the BBC felt it passed back in the days of cathode ray tubes. this is the highest quality recording I have ever seen of this era of BBC news and the news in general from a domestic tape, its not far off the quality of archive clips of the news I have seen on DVD extras, how did you get such a high quality transfer as I have not had as much success with domestic tapes?
@vhs_videohomesystem

Yes that footage from Christie’s New York is very ropey! From my 90s newsroom experience it was probably fed overnight on an analogue satellite, and converted from NTSC to PAL. Very punishing on picture quality. America always looked blurry to UK viewers 😊 When I worked in that area I was asked to run off a sequence of the titles for a friend’s friend who was an enthusiast. I kept that broadcast quality analogue tape for years, then transferred it to a digital tape just before the analogue work machines were ripped out in the 2000s.

In the analogue days, no one would have ever noticed the quality change too much. Back in the analogue days, even those who lived close to a transmitter and had great reception still has the odd bit of fuzziness.
@KeiranCounsellKC1994
@KeiranCounsellKC1994 Жыл бұрын
@@johnking5174 yeah, I remember the analogue era xD was very interesting, some channels were clear (on a clear day) others were barely watchable (on a clear day) xD as soon as everyone switched to the flat screens aswell all the unfortunate analogue stuff was fully visible, especially of stuff made before the digibeta era round the later half of the 90s. Ontop of that you had the other unfortunate side effect of analogue with the recordings, could have a clear as day tv signal but as soon as it went onto a home vhs it was like a stormy day picture

As wonderful as this "glass" coat of arms is (and I mean that), it would have been nice to get a proper good look at it in all its detail. We never did because the camera just panned it. And let's not forget TVs were small in those days, and often fuzzy depending on your aerial. For the most part this glorious coat of arms just looked like a blob.

This was roughly one year before BBC News moved out of Studio N2 and moved into the new Studio N6 at the BBC News Centre at BBC Television Centre. Even though the news design would remain unchanged until May 1999, you could notice the move, eagle eyed viewers could see the difference in studio lighting.
@deathbyteacup
@deathbyteacup 10 ай бұрын
This "studio" is entirely CGI. You can't see the real lighting.
@johnking5174
@johnking5174 10 ай бұрын
@@deathbyteacup Eh not exactly - Studio N2 had the curved desk and a curved blue backdrop. The panels behind the newsreader were replaced during the day - warm pink/blue panels for Breakfast News. Crisp blue for the 1pm and 6pm News. And very dark panels for the 9pm News. So not 100% CGI. They created a CGI studio for the opening titles of each bulletin, and then placed in part of the real set into the CGI world.
