Concluding the documentary series exploring Britain's social security system. Incapacity.
Sickness benefit is a cornerstone of Britain's welfare state, but it costs 8 billion a year and is rising. To cut the budget, the DSS has decided to scrap the existing benefit and subject all claimants to a new incapacity test. The government hopes this will find that 250,000 claimants are actually fit for work and so save 2 billion from the budget.
This programme takes a look at how
DSS doctors in Glasgow attempt to distinguish claimants who are genuinely sick from those who are fit to work. William Hague and his tory colleagues look at ways to save money from the system.
Some old footage of Glasgow in here as well.

Plantar Fasciitus!!? I had that and was in agony for a whole year. Had to carry on lumping sheets of glass around on my feet, all day, for 10 hours! No sick pay at the company I worked for.

They need to create employment and stop sending jobs overseas. Same for the U.S. Being on disability kills a person's spirit.

If you knew what you were talking about, you might realise that you can get some disabled benefits AND work. Disability Living Allowance is not means tested in respect of whether you work or not. These disability benefits are paid to people in and out of work to assist them with the increased costs of living that tend to come with being disabled. Which do you think is going to kill an employed disabled person's 'spirit' faster? Giving them a benefit or not giving it to them? I don't know what the state of affairs with disability benefits was when this programme was made, but it's over twenty years old. Meanwhile, in 2023, they've just scrapped Work Capability Assessments which force disabled people to continually prove their entitlement to benefits. Turns out there are actually quite a lot of sick people out there. Not receiving disability benefits when actually disabled - now that'll kill your 'spirit'.

@45:00 I've never seen someone use their head to jesture so much and to move their neck so much to nod their head, yet he is strapped up in a neck brace because supposedly his neck needs support. I can't help but think that he put the neck brace on - only to go to the Surgery and to look decrepit during his assessment, so as to gain sympathy😢.. 😂
