Sierra Leone: An attempted coup? BBC Africa

Armed men attacked a military barracks and a prison in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone on November 26th.
Several current and former military officials were involved, raising the possibility that it was an attempted military coup.
The country’s information minister called the attack “co-ordinated and planned” and there have been several military coups across western and central Africa in recent years, including in neighbouring Guinea.
But was it a coup? BBC Africa’s Mayeni Jones reports on exactly what happened in the Sierra Leonean capital.

I'm in Sierra Leone and calm has been restored. The situation was not attempted because the military officers took over the 2 main military barracks in Freetown where all major equipment was kept and later they released all prisoners in broad daylight using the same military equipment. If it was a coup then they would have succeeded but they never attempted to storm the presidential lodge.

I wish Africans would stop fighting, being selfish, & wicked! I wish they would unify so that living in Africa can be like living in the 🇺🇸 USA but BETTER🤩! With less violence & more peace peace ☮️. I pray they for Africa to have better residential homes, non crumbling infrastructure, a constant power grid💡, free K-12 education, taxes that actually benefit the taxpayers, highway 🚗, and currency 💴 system that is Continental. AFRICA could become a global superpower if all Africans put aside their tribalism issues for the good of their continent!!!

I am not from Sierra Leone but this event kind of reminded me of the sad state of that country through out the 90s for the wrong reasons. Those people just need some peace even in the midst of all their problems and a coup or whatever name you called it is not one of the answers.

Bio was NEVER re-elected by the people of Sierra Leone 🇸🇱, he took the peoples right forcely with that so call election Boss, they forcely toke the election. And Mr Bio his wife once says to the Sierra Leone people that her husband have a P.H.D in coup.

Which part of the world is safer? Ask those in the US, Canada, Australia, etc... they will tell you it has been difficult ever since the crisis of COVID 19. But most will not tell you the truth. They would rather buy on sales from whatever country they are coming from, and they will go back home to pretend, and that causes pressure. Let us pray that Africa wakes up for the better. 🙏

Africans can come to schools in Eastern Europe, schools are free, health care is free, you don't have to force yourself to Western Europe, to France, in Eastern Europe we have the lowest unemployment rate, shops are open on Sundays, you can earn extra money on weekends, Eastern Europe, the Intermarium countries need workers to factories in industry, processing, for the construction of highways, expressways, sidewalks, infrastructure

What do you expect Sierra Leone to do with its mineral resources other than sell them? What do you expect Sierra Leone to do with it's beaches other than have tourists visit them?

@@JohnHughesChampigny Start increasing the market values of your natural resource instead of selling them as raw materials. A Good example of this is, the Diamond industry, Sierra Leone have been selling rough diamonds since that mineral was discovered in the country all the back in the 50s or 60s instead of selling polished Diamonds which would have increase the values of those stones. Little, Tiny Namibia polished their diamonds before exporting them which provides more jobs and revenue for the country. What about Iron Ore, which is abundant in the country, all these years Sierra Leone have been exporting Iron Ore instead of melting the Iron Ore into steel, that alone would bring more jobs and more value from that Iron Ore, STUPID! What about your Boxie? Have your leaders ever thought of processing the Boxie there by increasing the value of the Boxie and provide more jobs and more revenue for country? STUPID! What else is Sierra Leone going do with their beaches? Man, you guys can't even protect your own coastal waters, you allow foreign commercial fishing boats from Korea, China, Japan, Europe coming into your areas and overfish in the area and destroy the local small-scale fishing industry because the West African government can't even porrect their coastal waters, what a shame! Do you know how many millions of Dollars your county is ls losing to these foreign thieves? Not to mention the thousands of jobs the government could have created if there is a vibrate local commercial fishing industry in Sierra Leone. Why don't you tell your current leader with a P.H.D in coups to use that P.H.D into something predictive and do some of the things I mentioned above, that would really be a useful way of putting that "P.H.D in coup." into good use.

@joey8033 I already knew the outcome of the past National elections before the election even took place. HOW DO I KNOW? Well, the biggest mistake they made in the constitution is to have the sitting president appoint the election commissioner. Do you know what that means? It means that, whoever the president appoints to that position, that person is actually working for the president not the people of Sierra Leone. At the end of the day, that person in that position is going to do whatever the sitting president requested him to do, period. This is how I know the outcome the the last National election before it even took place. So what do Sierra Leoneans learn from the past election? Rectify or change the constitution by making the Election Commission a separate Entity that is not obligated to any party or the sitting president & the head of the commission should not be solely appointed by the ruling party or the sitting president as it is now, its main purpose is to conduct elections for the country to have a fear election in the country. If this does not happen, Sierra Leoneans will see the same problems in the future, no doubt about that. Well, I guess the man put his PHD degree in coups into use in the last elections. to stay in power. All I can say is, for Sierra Leoneans to be patient for the next 5 years and keep the peace for the sake of the country as the country needs peace more than ever. I WISH ALL SIERRALEONEANS ALL THE BEST, PEACE, TRANQUILITY, AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR - 2024

i am against of crimes committed by israel , but image our european streets blocked by protests becouse of critical situations around the world: Gaza,Ukraine,Sieraleone,Northkorea,Afganistan etc. ,will be chaos! What about my normal life? I want to go out with my kids without see them felling usafe,they are kids and they dont know what is going on.
