Every year tens of thousands of Ethiopians begin the perilous 2,000 kilometre trek from their home country to Saudi Arabia, attempting to cross mountains, deserts, the Red Sea and even a war zone.
Some of these migrants describe how they face robbery, extortion and starvation in temperatures of around 50 degrees.
Many die along the way, while others fall short and end up begging on the streets.
BBC Africa Eye brings you the story of some of those who risk it all.

I cried when that man said, 'Everyone has abandoned me.'..it hit my heart like a sharp object piercing through it..Im glad he has good parents who welcomed him back with open arms....Some of us face EVIL at home & outside... It is not just a roof over our heads and food on the table. It's a car in the driveway, a smart phone in the pocket, a 75 inch flat screen on the wall, stable electricity, clean water, indoor toilet \ sinks, a nice bed, privacy, computers, gaming consoles, kitchen appliances, soap, washing machines, dryers, air conditioning - heating, refrigerator-freezers, a safe neighborhood, a locking front door, toys, pets and so much more. I mean the difference between the lives of extreme poverty I see lived in this video are light-years more horrid than my worst days ever. Yes this is injustice but on our level we can't abolish it much as some would like to.

I was taught to never deny another person food, my mom said something about how food is insignificant because we end up pooping it, so it really broke my heart to see people hungry and just begging for food with their eyes. Why can't we treat each other better in this world?

@@SeeLasSee Africa has some of the most well-educated leaders in the world. Most of their leaders are people who went and received tertiary education in the west. The problem is that politics in the continent is mostly based on tribe rather than ideology. Very few African countries have an ideologically based form of politics.

It's not just African but European leaders. They brought their way of life to otherwise rich with abundant natural resourceful nation of Africa. They brought their false Religion to deceive us, Education to teach us lies and falsehood. Destroyed our cultural values and way of life. Britain's BBC is simply mocking Africa. African nations They taught us the Whiteman's way of life Ethiopia, Nigeria inclusive, .Many years after their divisive influence Africa remain a tribal enclaves unable to send one man to the moon. Britain, US, have used the concept of globalization to bastardize African currencies with The World Bank as the hatchet Institution to spread poverty all over Africa, and bring us to nothing in the global financial order. Granting we are a developing nation why should it take thus long to developed? Why should the global financial world use a uniform standard to measure home currencies relative to their Developed countries currencies? It's a huge hoax and deception by these wicked and evil European nations. Some day it will be the turn of Africa to partition Europe. Believe me.

To be fair to him if everyone tried to get out at once it could capsize the boat- people unfamiliar with boats often make this mistake, it is a reason why a lot of refugee boats capsize just as rescue is about to arrive. That said he a) could have actually could have made a hell of a lot more of an effort to inform people rather than hit them b) a whole bunch of those blows were clearly unnecessary c) not smuggled people for money and but their lives at risk in the first place, so I am not feeling particularly charitable to him.

this young man really touched my soul. i cried for him and what he went through just to get a better life. he is a beautiful human being who deserves love and respect. shame on those who hurt him and others . where is your humanity. as a mother i know how his father must have felt not being able to help him. i just thank god that he survived and was reunited with his family who do love him. this heartbreaking story of these peoples fight for a better life makes me truly grateful for what i have. these governments should be forced to look after their people in a humane way. money truly is the root of all evil

It's a huge continent, most of it receives piss poor rainfall, there is abundance of human, crop and livestock diseases because of the climate, it's HUGE so getting anywhere is a pain yea and let's not forget all the cunts waiting to kill and maim you just because. Africa as a continent is rich in natural resources, there are very few countries in africa who aren't rich in natural resources. It's not a narrative, it's factual. "cunts"? Who are these cunts exactly? Go ahead and elaborate, the fact that there's violence in Africa doesn't mean that it's not a rich continent, where is the correlation? It doesn't make sense at all, try something else. Wealth is not connected to violence, there's violence in Europe yet it's still mostly a rich continent, the same with America. And getting anywhere is not a pain, you do realise that Africa is a continent right? So like every other continent if you're going to cross borders and go to other countries the easiest and safest way would be by airplanes, just like any other continent.

As heartless as it sounds I think it might actually be illegal in Djibouti to aid illegal migrants, so if they aided them it is the sort of thing you would have to keep strictly off camera, second I think one of the messages of the video was to present the risks of the journey, if you decide to intercut it with pictures of people giving aid it could encourage people to go thinking that they might receive help- note how they were very careful to not show anyone who actually found work in Saudi Arabia.

@Bekri Saudi long has had bad human rights record against Black people. Maids, servants and poor are treated worse than dogs. I hear all the stories and videos of Black people, including being beaten, tortured, raped, starved and killed. I see this all the time in the arab world including Saudi.

I can’t help shedding tears seeing Africans who occupy the territory in the world flowing with milk and honey suffer like this. It’s so sad and heartbreaking seeing how humans who have treat the have not. I wish I have some special powers to deal with Africa leaders, I wish I have some special powers to fix Africa and take the pains of all my brethren away. @Nancy Samuelson don’t try to project your western world issue of color in Ethiopia. There are people that look like Mustafa who is Oromo, in Tigray and Amhara. We all look alike here, with unique Ethiopian features and the issue here is not color but ethnicity pushed by so called activists and leaders who want power. Don’t just make baseless accusations without understanding who we are and how we have lived together for thousands of years.

@Nancy Samuelson what do you mean Greek blood? We are Ethiopians and we are not mixed race however white people want to define us. I can trace my ancestry to the 16th century and there is no white or Arab. You tried to make it about skin tone which isn’t the case in our country. The documentary showed two of the major ethnicities Amhara and Oromo and they look alike. If they had shown tigrayans, you would have seen similar features. There are both darker and lighter skin people in all these ethnicities. Ethiopians can identify other Ethiopians by their features not color. The issue of extreme poverty and then migration is nationwide not limited to people of certain ethnicities. I was pointing out that it is not about color . This heartbreaking story represents my fellow Ethiopians from all ethnicities despite skin color. This is about poverty and the injustice tied to it.

i really cried seeing the 25 year old lady who died trying her best to escape poverty, i felt so sad how fortunate some of us are and yet we take that for granted. just look at the faces of children in the streets saying they took this journey to change the lives of people back home.
