Tbh, I find the Second Doctor's regeneration to be more haunting and eerie than the rest of the Doctors. Sure, the Seventh was shot by group of gangsters and then his body was fucked up by Medical Doctors who didn't understand Time Lord biology, and so one. But the Second Doctor is essentially being executed by his *own* people.
@Thicc_Cheese_Dip
@Thicc_Cheese_Dip 4 жыл бұрын
@@DavidLopez-up3qm the Second Doctor went on missions for the Time Lords (e.g. The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors, The Two Doctors) before being forced to regenerate by animated scarecrows, so that's possibly even more messed up when you learn that he was used as a tool, in the same way the Master was used as a tool by Rassilon in The End Of Time.

@@John-uf8nt Pertwee is my favourite, although Troughton might be the best actor. Baker is great too but I never thought he outshined his 3 predecessors. Everybody after Baker suffered from John Nathan Turner. Davison had no gravitas or credibility as somebody smarter than the humans. Came across as a slightly unimpressed school teacher. The scripts also got worse. People say Caves of Androzani (last Davison story) was good but I thought it dragged on. It dragged despite superficially moving faster and having more action.

Tom Baker may have been the first to be seen far and wide Stateside, thanks to PBS, but Pertwee's arcs were the first to be partially syndicated here. They were seen in Philly on WPHL 17 for a year or two, including a color copy of "The Daemons." Baker was there for seven seasons, while the average stay has been three. Who knows how long Pertwee would have been there without Delgado's death or the crew shakeup. He might have been just as much a fan favorite here. By the way, good luck Sean with "Gotham."

The monk K'ampo Roche was a character in Planet of the Spiders who was a friend of The Doctor's. He, if I remember right was a renegade Time Lord with the ability to project himself. Earlier in the episode, he had an assistant called Cho je (I think that was the spelling) and when he regenerated, it turned out Cho je was a projection of his next incarnation, so he effectively regenerated into Cho je. Hence Sarah Jane's line about him looking like Cho je but actually being K'ampo Roche. It sure is confusing if you haven't seen or read about the rest of the episode but then again the scene was originally designed to be played with the rest of the footage in the episode so it would've been clearer for original viewers.

T. Baker was brilliant, and for all his brilliance, Pertwee summed him up so plainly in The Five Doctors as 'teeth and curls' I have always enjoyed that description (while Baker described Pertwee as the human lightbulb). Sarah Jane and the Doctor could have married at the end of Hand of Fear, I don't think now I would have minded one bit. I love watching this now, and thinking, as Robot was the first Doctor Who episode I saw in the states, that the Doctor was an eccentric scientist and Harry and Sarah were his 'Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane' tho I never was sure why Brig had such a casual reaction to the tardis disappearing at the end of that story. What a fool I was.

oh my gosh madame vastra says the same thing as brigadier when the doctor regenerated into the twelfth. "here we go again." and in 'the christmas invasion,' rose asks what the doctor's going to do, and he says, "back to the tardis." rose says, "on your own?" they say the same thing to each other at the end of 'doomsday.' i love it when doctor who has connections like this!

Farrah Falaux this was uncommon, so when it did happen it was always an exciting moment and normally done in celebration of an anniversary. watch the episodes "the 3 drs" "the 5 drs" "the 2 drs" or "the day of the dr" they're the main multi dr stories, as for why it was done. the dr's a time traveller, so on rare special occasions a situation arises in which he goes back in time and has his predecessors help him out

Elisabeth Kelley I honestly have an issue with Madam Vastra saying "Here we go again" at the start of Deep Breath. Because for 1, she's never seen any other Doctor before Matt Smith so how can she have added any weight to the words "Here we go again"? Second, we know the Doctor hasn't met Vastra before his 11th self because he is totally unfamiliar with this version of the Silurians before then and seems very surprised that they also look like that. So he can't have met Vastra before his 11th self or he'd know what to expect when he removed that Silurians mask. Three, since she's never actually been present for a regeneration her words still make less sense considering she's never see a Doctor change before. The reason the lines worked for the Brigadier was because first he was familiar with 2, then 2 regenerated into 3 and the Brig met 3 just after regeneration and though skeptical that this man was the Doctor accepted that it was the same man also having worked with the man through his post regeneration trauma. Then 3 becomes 4 and he says "Here we go again" meaning he has to get used to the Doctors new face, new personality but also likely have to cope with him through his regeneration trauma, again. That's why cutting and pasting the line, though cute, really makes no sense on any level at all. Plus my biggest gripe of all with it is that all it serves to do is to take away from the Brigadier saying the line where its in a place that makes much more sense and has much more impact.

PLANET OF THE SPIDERS, ROBOT & ARK IN SPACE watched back-to-back, is an incredible experience. The culture shock must have been amazing for 1974-75 WHO fans as the program transitioned from Barry Letts & Terrance Dicks to Philip Hinchcliffe & Robert Holmes. POTS has its flaws, but most of the story is a very good 3rd Dr tale and it's sad to see his era end. ROBOT is a charming child-friendly 3rd Dr story introducing the 4th Dr. ARK IN SPACE is off the deep end Adult Sci-Fi.

This is easily one of the most moving scenes in the show's history. The Doctor genuinely looks like he's dying from the radiation. "Facing my fear was more important than just going on living" "Please, Doctor, don't die..." "A tear, Sarah-Jane? Whilst there's life, there's...." Brilliant acting by Jon Pertwee and Lis Sladen. Way better than the modern show where the Doctor gives us a half hour speech telling us how he feels, how we should feel about that, Murray Gold crashing away in the background with all the subtlety of a gold brick smashed into your brain followed by lashings of glowing CGI. LESS is BETTER. Reply on good acting and people behaving like real people! I cried when I saw this on broadcast and it still tears me up now!

Meh. The old ones look incredibly dated and the acting is fairly wooden, except for the Brigadier. At least in New Who the acting is generally stellar (Tennant, Smith and Capaldi nailed their versions). I just didn't feel all that convinced by this scene at all I'm sorry to say.
@richardgregory3684
@richardgregory3684 Жыл бұрын
@@aclarkson9368 You mean you're used to hearts-on-my-sleeves exposition with Murray Gold blaring "Cry you bastards" in the background? Give me this over Tenant's blub-fest and speechifying ("I'm dying of radiation but it's gonna take me half the episode to do it, including giving my own eulogy")
@aclarkson9368
@aclarkson9368 Жыл бұрын
@richardgregory3684 Used to? That's an odd expression. I've watched the series a couple of times and compared it with clips of the old stuff and honestly the increase in quality in the new version is pretty stark. Russell T Davies did an exceptional job of expressing the Doctor's loneliness and guilt over his involvement in the time war. I also quite enjoyed Smith and Capaldi's eras even though that was under Moffat. Also, you're largely referring to one particular moment as opposed to the entirety of the series, which I find strange. 10's fear of death/regeneration was built up over the course of an entire season, much like the plot elements of the previous seasons before it. So the operatic nature of his death was well-deserved imo. The Tennant era really was something special.

Just finished the Tennant 4th series and Capaldi series 9 part one. I was hooked in the late 70's here in the states by Tom Baker. I was enthralled by the old timey feeling and lack of flashy Hollywood sets. Very little audio with just the sound effects took me back to the 50's and early science fiction. Awesome franchise! I hope it never dies! I have evolved though and love all the new stuff and the movie was OK however a little silly but I just love to watch the eye candy of all the incarnations of Dr.WHO series. Not even Star Trek or Star Wars has given me the same pleasure!

I see a lot of comments making fun of the monk, but in the context of the story his appearance makes total sense. K'anpo Rimpoche is the teacher/guru/mentor of the Doctor, mentioned in a previous story with Jo, and makes his first appearance in this story, I really liked him. He too regenerated earlier in the story, in the same episode in fact.
