North Koreans tell BBC they are stuck and waiting to die - BBC News

Three North Koreans want to tell the world about the situation in the country.
They expose, for the first time, the disaster unfolding there since the government sealed the borders more than three years ago starvation, brutal crackdowns and no chance to escape.
Under the tyrannical rule of Kim Jong Un, North Koreans are forbidden from making contact with the outside world.
A spokesperson for the North Korean government has disputed the claims, which they said were “not entirely factual”.

@@ChristopherGray00 The US government has wet dreams about this level of control. Why hasn't our government done anything to fix the water crisis in flint, MI . Because all the US government cares about is money. Did you know nancy pelosi makes over 100k a year? Both sides of the political spectrum in the US are corrupt. not just republicans, but both democrats and republicans, not much different from china's political system, china is a one party system, the US technically has many political parties but the only people who ever have a chance are those that align to one of the two main ones, being republican or democrat, i am certainly grateful for the privileges and freedoms i do have. However the US is being influenced by china. Hunter biden and Joe biden have both benefited from trade with both China and Russia and Ukraine. Biden isn't innocent. In the West, the individual is the basic unit that all of society is ordered around, and the power is diffused within rule by the many. In Asia, the emphasis is on the group, or the clan, and to govern so many, power is routed primarily through a few individuals. The defining issue of our era is deciding which system will dominate the other and triumph. Only one will be applied all over the world in the future. Its no longer about capitalist vs communist, that is yesteryear's conflict. And each system benefits some at the expense of others. The Chjnese or North Korean leaders say that in the West, ppl may not be starving to death, but that they are still wage slaves that are given the illusion of political choice. the system never adapts to address their problems, so ppl use drugs to dull the pain of being a voiceless consumer who will be forgotten bc they could not afford to start a family and worked for a corporation their entire life. The challenge of being blessed with wealth is actually more arduous than the challenge of poverty. Its why most lottery winners end up destroying their lives.

As a Chinese I am shocked to learn how bad the current situation is in North Korea. Growing up I've always heard stories of North Koreans trying to seek refuge in one of our local towns bordering the country. But I didn't know the people's lives got this bad after COVID. Here I am playing Diablo 4 at home while listening to KZfaq and planning with my friends to go party at a KTV later this evening, while an entire country just a mile away is starving to death. The last thing the CCP needs to see is their communist neighbor's regime fall, even if people know how bad it is, because that would worry the Chinese government that their people will want to transition to democracy/capitalism as well. It also has the possibility of becoming a nuclear if Kim's nukes are as capable as he says they are. Of course, the US could easily obliterate them with nukes but it's too risky a situation to risk China getting involved or even a potential nuclear strike on western soil. It's not like WWII where at the point the Allies liberated the concentration camps, the Nazis were already majorly losing the war, and had no shot at ever coming back, whereas North Korea still has a sort-of ally with China, and the regime won't collapse for another few decades. AND the govt response admits some of the information is TRUE. It's been a hellhole since 1950s and for some reason killing off the people in the countryside outside the main city is in their best interest. For a while the govt was making the farmers into slaves by coming by and pretty much stealing the entire crop not even leaving enough to live on to feed the family who grew it to for use to feed the military. It's a heartless regime but Stalin and Mao and PolPot all refined this method. All totalitarian top down one rule governments act like this.

The US bombed North Korea catastrophically in 1953 and since then viciously sanctioned and tried to overthrow the government politically - so they have good reason to not trust the US and good on them for protecting themselves. In 1996 I was in my office in Seoul, South Korea when a North Korean fighter jet flew over my office. We all looked out the window and observed it was flying so low we could see every detail of the plane. It was doing laps over Seoul. Later we learned he demanded permission to land before he would run out of fuel and crash. The pilot was granted permission to land. The pilot said he put his entire family in danger by defecting but needed to tell everyone how most were starving to death at that time. Sadly nothing has been done to help the North Koreans. I wonder if this generation of North Koreans will eventually revolt against the Kim regime, or will they just just lie down and starve to death?

I don’t know. I don’t think we can really imagine what they would’ve wouldn’t be thinking. It’s not just them who would die if it didn’t go the way that they wanted it to. They have to consider their families. If you do something like that in North Korea, three generations of your family get sent to a prison camp. Normal people don’t have guns. They don’t have access to the arms needed to bring down the country. There’s no organized effort to do this because of informers. It’s just so awful. They would need the military to be in support or something like that, but I don’t see how that would happen. The rest of the world won’t do anything because North Korea is allies with China and Russia, so, no one is willing to stick their neck out to help a people, who has been systematically oppressed, for over 70 years. It’s awful, but it’s the reality. I wish I could do something to help, but I don’t know what. I really do care about the people there, and I pray to God that He would give me some way to help them and, far more importantly, that He would turn the heart of their leader to good, and that He would help the people.

We actually learned quite a bit of detail about their lives and locations. And then the BBC took the information back to the North Korean government for their reaction/response???? Unlike political dictatorships in China and Russia, North Koreans are still trapped in the 1950s. For me, this is heartbreaking because it's been this way for a very long time and these people should not have been forced to live this way. When I joined the US Army my first duty station was in South Korea in 1980. I remember being shown films about North Korea and other very important information. Being stationed in South Korea I met some ROK Soldiers and I was shocked at the amount of inhuman treatment of those in North Korea and how they suffer. Having served my time there I spent time patrolling inside the DMZ it's kind of weird at first but you get used to doing patrols. I don't if they still play that loudspeaker toward the border of South Korea playing all sorts of propaganda to the US and South Korean soldiers. The Kim family rules by fear and with no remorse taking people and punishing whole families even back 3rd or 4th generations of people. @@racool911 that's not how it works with absolute dictators. He's literally at the top of the pyramid with all the power. He shouldn't have to be afraid of the measly "upper ranked officials" whom he appointed to their status in the first place and whom he can get rid of or execute any time, let alone of his literal peasants of people. It's very truly the other way around--it's THEM who are afraid of him. This isn't 18th century France with the possibility of people rioting and triumphing against his regime. He's basically a god over there with no one able to challenge his authority.

@@user-sy9ev8hh5k And he likes to keep it that way. However a dictator only remains powerful if the upper elites are happy. It'll be a major red flag to them if he does anything that might even remotely compromise the system they benefit from. If one or two upper ranks are unhappy they can be swiftly and easily dealt with. If a lot of them start disliking you at once you're basically screwed. You can't make an entire population afraid enough to not revolt all by yourself.

Yup and it also sucks because the chinese and the chinese people support the only fat family in North Korea. They literally send defectors back to their deaths for trying to escape to the korean embassy in Thailand via through China. They prefer having an entire population to remain as a prison and starve for the sole purpose of using it as a buffer zone. If the chinese actually helped south korea take out Kim Jong Un, then there would be no point in having US bases staying in Korea.

Once upon a time there was a similar situation: A fat king, an ignorant queen, and their starving people. It ended in the French Revolution. About time the people take their future in their own hand.

As an expat who lives in S Korea, this news story really makes my insides hurt. A totalitarian govt like this must end, but the world cannot do anything I guess. There are so many things that are unjust in the world, but this govt has no place to rule over others when they purposely let them die and starve. The people will have to revolt, a revolution, where they can break free from this tyranny. Perhaps then, the rest of the world could come to their rescue.

Although seemingly not the case, the existence of the Kim family's regime also greatly impacted the development of South Korea. The border has been fortified soon as the war was "over," and the self-proclaimed free government ironically fed certain companies to a rapid growth with direct intervention and support. Practically an island with no land connection to other countries, South Korea quickly shifted towards mercantile businesses, exporting cheap but effective goods to as many countries as possible. This eventually resulted in those certain companies rising as megacorps which are now widely known by the names of Samsung, LG, Hyundai, GS, and so on. The South Korean economy has reached the point where it is largely dependent on export and will meet its doom if any of these megacorps were to collapse, yet millions and trillions of dollars are spent on fortifying the northern border and shielding the country. Despite past attempts to negotiate with North Korea and offer aids, the regime still stands for over 70 years, regardless of how concrete it may seem. Those who have witnessed the tyranny and brutality of the North have died of old age, and the younger generations in the South openly admit that they see no way to reunite with the North, unless there is any form of violence such as a mass uprising inside North Korea, or the continuation of the war. This phenomenon is more prominent with young South Korean males, who must go through a conscript period of 2-3 years, potentially more depending on which branch and service they choose. The fact that they have to waste a large part of their youth for an act they didn't choose comes as a great frustration, and the following anger is directed towards the North. Although both the constitution and the army of South Korea agree on that the northern half is not to be recognized as a separate country and is a land that must be reacquired, their desired methods are direct opposites. The constitutional law says that a peaceful method is preferred, but the army internally educates their soldiers that the North Korean army is not an officially recognized army, but a bunch of mobsters that defend a pointless, meaningless cause of socialism forced upon them by the Kim regime, and that they must storm the North as it is the most effective way of wiping socialism off the Korean land.

how do you know that people are starving in North Korea, how do you know anything about life there, I assume from those few people who escape every year, but can those people be trusted, what if they are criminals who escape from prison for example, wouldn't they lied everything. I know about twenty years ago, all our gypsies ( national group in my country)went to Italy with sad stories of starvation and persecution and there they received asylum (accommodation, food and some money per household member, but it was more important for them that they were there because they could to beg and steal what brought them good money) the point is, I don't believe much in sad stories and I don't believe almost nothing at all bbc and cnn

you think bbc and cnn recorded 150 shows about cannibalism in north korea and suddenly everything is true, if you weren't there ,then don't believe anything "on their word".You weren't there, almost no one was there, and those who were certainly didn't see such a thing, if it existed at all. And if I start to believe CNN and the BBC for granted then know that I operated something nasty on my brain.
