It's that time of year when the lakes become clear of Ice and the days grow in length. The trees start to take on leaves and lawns smell of freshly cut grass. If you struggle with seasonal allergies, pollen is in the air. It's a great time of year if you enjoy fishing because the Month of May offers some of the best Freshwater fishing for Trout. The Lakes and Streams have been free of ice for roughly a month and the temperature of the water is in that fishy zone.
Trout become far more active when water temperatures are between 50°f - 60°f and the Month of May puts the water in this column. The large freshwater lakes that we fish are very deep, yet you do not need to fish deep this time of year. Some of our best days are spent trolling fast on the surface with minnow and Salmon fry imitations. Depending on which species you are targeting you may want to fish in open water or seek structure along the shoreline. It is never a bad idea to use minnow patterns ranging in size from 2" - 6".
As much as I could list off the lures above for trolling in Freshwater. You can see a common theme, they all represent bait fish. Some rattle, roll, dodge, dip, dive and as much as they look similar they all preform differently at different speeds. I am going to talk about the importance of making sure your lure is doing what it is supposed to do when it's in the Water. It is always important to make sure you read the packaging on your lures. Typically they will tell you how to rig them or how to use them properly. Some lures only work at a certain speed, so pair them with lures that work at that speed. If you put two lures together that work at different speeds you will be trolling a dud. A Dud is a lure that fails to work properly or is otherwise unsatisfactory or worthless.
Signs that you are trolling a dud are as follows;
Plugs moving only to one side
Lures laying on there side
Spoons not breaking their rhythm
Lures Working too hard
Shad Not shaking
Plugs rolling
If a flasher is not Rolling, It's not working.
When first getting started at operating your boat, one can be a bit overwhelmed. Making sure your lures are working, keeping the boat straight and simply rigging your gear properly can be challenging. Having a Professional Fishing Guide show you how things are done can make a World of difference. For this reason alone we take hundreds of locals and tourists fishing yearly. We will have you on the fast track to success, typically within the first day. For those of you that only fish 5 - 10 times a year, there is no point in buying a boat. You are better off visiting us and spend your time reeling in fish. Maintaining your boat alone will take up a few of your valuable days of fishing.
Below we have included a short video of our maiden voyage. We were on one of the many lake we fish in the Pemberton, BC area.
