For everyone with the 28 round question. I had heard about this but always loaded my Gen3 pmags with 30 until taking Larry's carbine class in North Carolina last week. Larry joked with us that within the first 15 minutes of class someone's mag would fall out from not being fully seated. We cleared the guns out before lunch and when we got back, sure enough, 5-10 minutes into the afternoon portion someone's mag fell out. I'll be loading 28 rounds from now on. Go ahead and try seating a mag with 30 versus 28 on a closed bolt and you can really feel the difference.

I've also found that 28 seems to be the magic number with most AR mags to have the most capacity but least resistance on mag insertion, especially on a closed bolt. Nice video.

I wish people wrote books more or made DVDs because most people don't live where insturctors give their classes, and really all you need is the verbal or written instruction and theory to the whys behind the hows to learn it. Practice and actual execution can be done on your own at the range. Most of the big names in handling a gun or self defense in general became big because they put their name out on some kind of media that was accessable to everyone. For some it was magazines like SWAT, for others, they wrote their own books or later made their own DVD like Clint Smith and Magpul.

I'm surprised how good this gun is for under $100. It has a descent weight to it unlike a toy, the quality looks and feels great, simple to attach the scope which is very clear and easy to sight. First shot out of the box before sighting was relatively accurate at 25 yards. It only took 6 shots to zero in the scope. I would definitely recommend purchasing this air rifle.

@boocomban
@boocomban 7 жыл бұрын
+Jake Philpott it not about standard. Troops not fully load magazine to keep magazine spring last longer and prevent feeding issue. Even with US troops or like Larry, he only load 28 rounds because GI magazine suck hard can easy double feeds or misfeed if you fully load your magazine. So 25 to 28 keep your spring from fully compress, make it last longer and avoid feeding issue.

Inserting a mag with 30 rounds with the bolt closed can be difficult. Loading them light (28 rounds) makes it much easier to insert when the bolt is closed. This doesn't matter if you're reloading an empty AR with the bolt held back.

@aaronorr9506
@aaronorr9506 7 жыл бұрын
That isn't the purpose of the dd32 mags. DD32 mags were purpose designed to give the shooter 32 rounds in a same size form factor as 30 rounds. If you follow the instructions in the video you will never have to under load your magazines. Also if you use a higher evap. temp. lubricant it will reduce the potential of a stuck bolt/carrier.

+gunslingerW7 Going to have to call you out on that myth. Compression/decompression cycles are what wears out the springs on M16 magazines. Some older pistol magazines have the long term compression problems however M16 magazines have never to very rarely ever exhibited the problem.
@MrButterpantz
@MrButterpantz 7 жыл бұрын
Larry, why would you opt for running the charging handle post fresh magazine insertion in lieu of pressing the bolt catch/release paddle? Using the charging handle introduces the possibility of short stroking it and creating issues. When you instead utilize the bolt catch release, it comes preloaded with just about all the force that buffer spring can provide but without the chance of a short stroke. Plus the bolt release method is faster back up on target then running the charging handle (in my experience and many others I've observed). Plus plus it prevents you from exposing an Achilles heel of that weapon platform. You jack up a charging handle (albeit a rare occurrence) that rifle is done. From a probability standpoint, the less frequently it is exposed outside of the upper reciever, the better. I know you know this stuff, I'm just personally curious as I dissuade my students from running the charging handle on reloads.
@paulmontana2062

If you notice in the vid the bolt is CLOSED when loading. Pressing the bolt release won't do much. With your lack of attention to detail I would not come anywhere near you or your students when you guys have loaded firearms. You may not notice the difference between me and a paper target.

@steeltalon2356
@steeltalon2356 7 жыл бұрын
Garner2554 It's because some magazines aren't easy to fully insert on a closed bolt if the mag is full. Depends on the rifle/mag or combination of both.
@aaronorr9506
@aaronorr9506 7 жыл бұрын
It is a lowest common denominator solution to what is a best training practices problem. More often than not people just want to slap the bolt release rather than drawing the charging handle all the way back and releasing it. With thirty rounds in the magazine, an excess of fouling in the action, and a lack of lubricant due to burn off the tension of the rounds in the full magazine could overcome the bolt/carrier momentum causing it to stick. That is why you use a high evaporation temp lubricant in conjunction with drawing the bolt back all the way to insure that the carrier can build up and maintain the momentum to carry the round into the chamber.
@DubbHub
@DubbHub 7 жыл бұрын
Garner2554 a lot of magazines won't lock in if you fully load them and try to reload with a closed bolt. I have some that will and some that won't. I just load all mine with 28 so I don't have to keep track.

Whats your reason for only loading 28? Spring wear?
@boocomban
@boocomban 7 жыл бұрын
Yes he only load 28 rounds to keep spring last longer, also avoid feeding issue. Many troops not fully load 30 rounds because it can easy cost double feed issue with gi mag and also keep the spring from fully compress save you from the spring stuck in compress to avoid misfeed issue. That why troops not fully load their magazine and alway tap magazine on their helmet to prevent spring jam. But that mostly happen with gi mag. After market magazine have higher quality but better safe than get jammed
@boocomban
@boocomban 7 жыл бұрын
+TripleU that is nothing to do with loading 28 or not, spring tention he was talk about is bolt release spring. Fully load magazine keep the feed tray at the bottom of the magazine, so you can hit the bolt release, the bolt release only work when you magazine run out, feed tray pop up and feed ram hit the bolt release to lock the bolt. The reason to load 28 rounds only is prevent double feed issue with gi magazine and make the life span of magazine spring last longer. Also prevent spring fully compress to avoid spring jam cost misfeed issue. So that's why troops usually not load full 30 rounds on their gi mag or they only load 30 rpunds on after market magazine

Nah I wasn't going to correct you or anything. I just want sure if it was because of spring wear. I have seen a lot of malfunctions caused because the spring was worn due to 30 rounds being in them for a while and not being used

Or you can hit the Bolt Release since the bolt was already back

Actually using the charging handle to release the bolt gives it more energy moving forward like a slingshot than a bolt catch would.

Brian Downey the bolt was closed in the video. I am guessing he is using this example for if you pick up and empty ar and load it.

In combat we use that charging handle, use bolt release can make the bolt snap and not fully seal, in that case you need to use forward assist to push the bolt fully seal. Cost more time than pulling charging handle.

You can but he doing it this way because it's one muscle memory that can be used for both loading the Ar15 and clearing a jam like a double feed

There are people who will disagree with every single detail of what Larry said and demonstrated in this video. This video is for those who value his opinion.

people practice these combat reload methods in matches and on ranges and get kicked off all the time. Sad. But true.
