Both have been proven lying about claims, counting aboned aircraft on the ground as kills. 50 to 1 German pilots were outnumbered all day and night from 44 to 45. Not saying they are liars, but the press extremely exaggerated their succes etc. In this interview, he does give Germany credit and seems humble.

It seems to be a growing thing, lots of interviews with old soldiers, sailors, and airmen. I know here in Australia there are quite a few organisations now recording interviews with as many ex-servicemen as possible, so we can keep their stories alive, as well as hearing their thoughts on the situations they found themselves in. The Australian war memorial in particular is doing a great job, and hopefully many more countries are doing similar, so humanity can learn, and remember!!

So much better of an interview, down to earth and insightful, than the typical documentaries you see. What an aircraft the P-51 was. Reminds me of my uncle's funeral, sad day, full honors at Arlington. But Uncle Mike was the most gregarious guy I ever knew, I learned a lot from that. He had befriended an F4 pilot who served in Vietnam. This conversation reminds me of sitting w/ this pilot, drinking scotch in honor of my beloved uncle, and listening to stories that will never make the history channel. I was totally captivated hanging on every word.

When age 18, I enlisted in the US Air Force in June 3, 1965, for a 20 year career serving in 17 nations, and all 6 Viet Nam Campaigns. A huge reason was that I was raised by my father, Captain Arthur C. Devine, who commanded B-17s for two war tours, which was 50 missions. Initially flying out of England, for his first 13 missions, over heavily protected Air Dromes and Submarine pens in France, Bremerhaven, Bremen... He was so Shell Shocked, Flak Happy, that he was medically retired at 20 years service, in 1958. He taught me every mission he led March 28, 1943, from England, in the 352nd Bomb Squadron, of the 301St Bomb Wing (H) (for Heavy), bringing his crew and Carnival Queen, through those missions after his transfer to Benghazi, Libya, following on to bases in Sicily, and, finally, Italy. He was on the major raids over the Alps, against Berlin, the oil fields of Ploesti, Romania. On a dozen missions, his assigned B-17 bomber was so badly damaged from enemy strafing, and from flak, that they had to be scrapped, parked and only used for parts to repair other aircraft to keep them flying. The war stories I know, from his career, and from mine!

Bud Clarence Anderson and I are both from Auburn California. Mr Anderson's family had a ranch in the little town of Newcastle California. My family work for Mr Anderson's father back in the 40s. I had the Good Fortune to fly with Mr Anderson and a B-17 out of Mather air Force Base. The flight was supposed to last just a half an hour. But once I started talking to Mr Anderson up front he had the pilot take a little detour around where he lived in Newcastle and where I lived seven and a half miles north of Auburn. The flight lasted about an hour and a half, and was quite memorable.

Had an uncle who was a crew chief on B17s until they were replaced by the B29 Super Forts. He was assigned to the Pacific. I grew up in the the Rio Grande Valley we're the Confederate Air Force was born, as it was known back then. OBrien was known a GOBY. retired as a full colonel or BG. Col Anderson typyifies the many pilots I had the pleasure of meeting and respect.
