This is massive banter - I'm an English Teacher myself, and a bloody brilliant one at that, but some of the people I work with don't know arseholes from tuesdays

If you pay a [teacher of something] significantly less than a [maker of something], obviously all the good ones are going to try to work in the industry instead of teaching. And, sadly, there are more than enough incompetent people to fill both the majority of teaching jobs _and_ the majority of industry jobs. Like that old joke says: "How many people work at your company? About 30% of the ones employed there." The structure of modern college / high school teaching is completely wrong anyway. You should never be graded by the same person who taught you (which is an obvious conflict of interests). In fact, teaching and certification should be handled by completely separate entities, with the former being a free choice and the latter being regulated by the state and the industry.

sarcastic bowl of cornflakes - There are standardised national exams at a couple of points everywhere, not just in the USA. But (USA included) you are still graded directly by your teachers in 95% of situations. And you still have to enrol (and pay for) a full "course" just to have a _chance_ of being evaluated / certified. Even those standardised tests are generally just a piece of paper that tests your memory (i.e., your ability to cram), not an actual test of your ability to perform a job or make meaningful contributions to a field. They're also generally written by career teachers, with little or no input from the industry (or even the government's economic planners), which means they tend to be very outdated. You obviously don't need to hire "twice as many people" to separate education from certification, because not every student is doing a certification exam every day (and current teachers' time is finite, anyway). In fact, the state would need to pay significantly _less_ people, because students would be free to use whichever source(s) they wanted (free, private, their own experience, a magic 8-ball, etc.). This would also free the state from treating education as a jobs programme, and encourage investing the money on the creation of more cost-efficient teaching resources (documentaries, websites, games, etc.). I didn't "just think of that". I _was_ a college teacher for several years. The system was designed for a time when teachers were the only available source of information, and where learning focused on memorisation. The former is no longer true, and the latter is far less relevant for most fields. It's not just that students (and teachers) are being forced to do a lot of things they shouldn't, it's that they're wasting time that they could be using to do something useful instead.

A fair comment mathnawi21. All these thumbs down for your comment just goes to show that a lot of people think they are above "the unwashed classes" nowadays. And nice name you have!

I'm a teacher and this sketch is so true, it's almost not even funny anymore. Some of the people I have to work with couldn't keep or do a job outside school if their life depended on it.

As a teacher I LOVE ,every single one of their skits on this subject!! The same thing can be said for any profession, its just that its so much easier to blame other people than ones parents for how they were raised by the school system and what they learned.. Lets admire movie stars and sports players instead and the world will be a better place!! :-)

@Maxtaxifromhell Actually, the original proverb is from Aristotle is a much more interesting: "Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach."

My uncle did some sort of 'Access to teaching' course, he actually studied enviromental science or something like that, he only got a 3rd in that too, so it can't be that hard/unusual. I think the videos are pretty accurate if you ask me. :D

@uzavas If you don't know the rules of grammar, how can you be expected to know the rules of phonemes, graphemes, digraphs and trigraphs? Which are not required to be taught in the National Curriculum.
@roxyfoxyk15 жыл бұрын
You certainly can be a teacher without the honours. (Yes I use a 'u' in the word) I did a BA/DipEd degree and happily teaching in different high schools. I thought this was funny. Cheers

lol. the funny thing is, I just quit my PGCE in history because I realised it seriously wasn't for me on any level. Not only do I not give enough of a crap about History, but I literally don't want to spend my life working my balls off for a cause I don't feel is worthy enough of my time. So, teaching can't really be a last resort thing. It's actually one of the hardest jobs I will ever see. I'm going to be a regular pleb like everyone else now. The 'real world', whatever that is, is easy.
@grailchaser12 жыл бұрын
@curzmg Yes. Yes, it was in favour of teaching. That's my point. His misquote has been used for far too long to bash the very people who have taken the trouble to teach.

I just think that in society we really need people who want to teach, not people who are just doing it because it was easy compared to law or other pathways, because as Maude Flanders would say, you have to think of the children!

Or maybe, just maybe, some people don't consider the pursuit of money the be all and end all of life, and that seeing as 99% of people have to work to pay the bills etc then you should attempt to do something that has the potential to be worthwhile..... But you'll grow up and realise that one day.

Mackem, give me an academic summary of "a midsummer night's dream" then, lol! Because that's what they MAKE us do for uni english! I think a lot of teacher's aren't that bright too, they were prob just too dumb to get into law or media studies or socio or something REALLY intelligent so they do teaching.
