Moving from the maintenance Shed to the Loco Works 8 May 2024 (with a lot of help from the 09 diesel shunter!).

Douglas Marsh would be so proud that someone resurrected his finest creation! It’ll look stunning if they painted it into LBSC umber and hooked it up with the Pullman set.
@phaasch26 күн бұрын
Unfortunately the cab shape is the modified post grouping shape given by the Southern Railway. But Beachy Head in SR lined green with the Pullman set would be a wonderful evocation of the Southern Belle in its later years.

It's easy to see the romanticism of steam engines. These mighty iron beasts roar into life with steam, and even while sleeping idle, breathe.

Judging by the "breathing" from the chimney, the timing and piston valves sound dead square and fresh!

We see Victorian 4-4-0’s steaming with the T3 and now Edwardian 4-4-2’s Steaming with the H2.

It's a new-build - a modern replica of a class and an engine that has been extinct for 60 years.

I’m just saddened they didn’t give her a non BR livery, but it’s a fetching engine regardless

I love it's funky design, honnestly the more locos are preserved and the more of them that can still run under their own power the better.

This is a new--build. Not a preserved loco.

It is very unlikely it will go mainline. There's no space to sympathetically fit electronic gear.

I think the Atlantics are so elegant and well proportiones, my favourite is the GN Ivatt C1s and you can see how beautiful Beachy head is. How wonderful when its fully lined out in BR mixed traffic livery.

i tought the atlantics were all scrapped
@lancesgranddaysout9 күн бұрын
Yes the Brighton Atlantics were all scrapped, the last one being Beachy Head, just before the preservation movement got going. BUT Beachy Head's regulator handle was saved and is now on the 'new' engine, so is it a new build, a rebuild or a restoration?! Check the Bluebell Railway's website for details of Beachy Head's official launch into traffic this August. Can't wait.
@the_atsf_railfan292615 күн бұрын
As someone from the US, im just curious, are steam locomotives common in the UK or are they just as rare as in the US?
@lancesgranddaysout9 күн бұрын
We're very lucky in the UK because a 1960s scrapyard bought over 200 locos to dismantle, but never got round to it so the locos were sold on for restoration, some being just hulks needing huge work. The scrapyard was Woodhams in Barry, South Wales, without which we'd have far less preserved locos.

Is that a c1 or am I stupid
@mattlander911921 күн бұрын
No it's an LBSC H2. Very similar as the designer of the H2 D.E. Marsh was an assistant of Ivatt at the GNR and had a copy of the drawings and made changes to build his own version.

The driver is on the diesel shunter, with one eye looking forward and one eye on the bacon frying on his cab's hotplate (a bit different from bacon and eggs on the steam fireman's shovel...).
