While bear attacks at Katmai are uncommon, its important to stay vigilant. Katmai has some great bear safety information here: www.nps.gov/katm/planyourvisit/bear-safety-in-katmai.htm Bear spray has been proven to be highly successful against an aggressive bear. The video of 747 coming down the trail, stopping to look at the sign and then turning around to walk back up the trail, all in close proximity to a group of people is one of the most amazing things I've seen. He is HUGE!. I would have soiled myself. LOL

I love bears and I'm glad I found this channel especially after KZfaq suggested a horrible video of a pair being eaten by a grisly. I took a pause to recover because the video wasn't labeled as anything disturbing. After I was told it was fake. I want to maintain my love for them. Thanks again for this info

And, just like that, Katmai Brooks Falls is off my Bucket List. 😳 I would be absolutely terrified if I was confronted by a bear on the trail. With my luck I would be the "very, very rare" injuries or fatalities. 🤪

I’ve done numerous hikes in bear country in Alaska & photographed the one in my pic (obviously using a zoom). Most recently, I hiked on Admiralty Island. Katmai is on my list. Bears are such magnificent animals. 🐻 PS - I noticed the bear moving through the forest before you mentioned it. :)

Not in katmai, I always remember a blackbear on the road very much like that path though. I was sitting on a pile of lumber no more than 10 ft away as it meandered past. Seemed unconcerned and I decided to stay where I was. Mom and Dad busy nearby never noticed. So obviously it should have been, they were quite skeptical when I told them. Could have been head-in-the-sand thing or I was never in danger if never there. 😆 In any case was no big deal - event over. Not that I would advise anyone to get that close! mind you.

We've seen one bear family spring cubs (cubs of the year). The mother is 910 and she has a single spring cub. This is her first known litter.

Hiking alone in brown bear country is more risky than hiking in groups, but it can be done safely with precautions. For example, you'll want to hike slower than usual and remain observant. It is easy to daydream on a hike, but staying mindful and in the moment can help you avoid close encounters (and see more wildlife). The other typical guidelines apply too: make noise when appropriate so you don't surprise bears, carry a deterrent such as bear spray, avoid travel corridors or other areas used frequently by bears.

Bear spray isn't rented or sold at Brooks Camp in Katmai, although many rangers carry it.

And put a portable electric bear fence around your campsite. There’s one out there weighing only 2.4 lbs and it’s really capable. Passive deterrence for a good night’s sleep.

How many people have been eaten by bears on the brooks Trail ? And why are human walking right in Bear territory ? Shouldn't we give bears privacy in their home ?

There are very few negative bear-human interactions at Katmai National Park, in large part due to the effort the park puts in to educating guests. There is a long history of human activity on the river. People have been using the river for more than 5,000 years. Bears are tough and have great tolerance for pain. If a bear were attacking or charging you, then wounding it would likely make the situation worse and provoke or prolong an attack. Unfortunately, if you need to shoot a bear to protect yourself from a bear, then you need to shoot to kill. (A firearm can an effective noise maker, though, which can be a deterrent.) In contrast, bear spray is a great tool because it is highly effective, easy to use, and non-lethal. Many big-game hunters in grizzly habitat carry bear spray because it works better to deter bears than a firearm, and it doesn't kill the bear. @@chucksanders5130 Firearms and bear spray are permitted in Katmai. I carried bear spray frequently when exploring backcountry areas of Katmai. Firearms used to be prohibited in all national parks but that was changed in 2010. People can now carry firearms in national parks if state law allows. To NOT recommend, while walking that area, at least one high powered rifle carried by an experienced hunter is criminally insane.

Under Federal law, the use and discharge of firearms at Katmai National Park is prohibited. Brooks Falls is only accessible by small aircraft and it’s extremely difficult to carry or check firearms. Visitors are allowed to carry bear spray but not one visitor has had to use it for many years.

Bear attacks are extremely uncommon at Brooks Camp. This is in large part due to the education done by the NPS, and also due to the fact that most of the bears are too fat on salmon to to deal with a person.

Thousands of people walk this trail every summer, safely in fact without a firearm. During a close encounter with a bear, rifles are often a poor choice especially for people who are not experts in marksmanship. However, there are times when a bear deterrent is necessary. Bear spray is a highly effective, easy to use, and (importantly) non-lethal deterrent. Rather than a firearm, it's what I've always carried when I travel alone in brown/grizzly bear country. It's also highly recommended by wildlife biologists and rangers. Some great info on it here: www.nps.gov/yell/learn/nature/bearspray.htm

@@KatKrueger wrong d1psh1t. As of February 22, 2010, a federal law allows people who can legally possess firearms under applicable federal and Alaska state law, to legally possess firearms within National Parks.
