The ultimate skating bearings test! Haven't you always wondered how much worse bearings get over time? I HAVE!
To answer that question I tested these ILQ-9 premium bearings in a 5km timetrial. One set brand new, and one set after 1 year of usage

Interesting. I believe the results you observed is because fresh bearings right out of the package have alot of extra oil which takes time to be ejected (i.e., the extra oil really slows down performance and hence speed). A fairer test would be to test the new bearings after they have been broken in. I clean my bearings every 25 to 40 miles. While that may seem overkill, it not only allows me to maintain speed more easily, but also saves me money because they last much longer. In so doing, I'm able to get about 6 months out of my bearings which is about 500 miles or so. Perhaps uniquely, I've also learned the virtue of only using one drop of oil (not two) to each bearing. Any more than that and the oil simply gets ejected from the bearing during use (e.g., wasted). Also, it takes time for that oil to be ejected, which slows you down longer. One drop allows the bearings to be optimal after about 2 to 3 miles of use...but it takes much longer to break in if you add more oil. But, by running lean on oil, you do have to clean and oil them more frequently. Enjoy.

Pack your bearings with synthetic NLGI #4 grease (about 3/4 full) and leave them alone. The stiffer grease prevents any contaminants from EVER getting to the bearing races, and there is always perfect lubrication. I'm near 2000miles over 3 years of all weather skating on the same bearings, never cleaned during that whole time, they roll smooth as new.

@mm6705 In the fall and winter, I switch out my racing bearings and wheels in favor of the Wicked rust free bearings and Torrent Rain wheels. The Wicked bearings are similar to what you described (e.g., greased). But, I find it takes about 200 to 300 miles (or more) to break them in before they reach reasonably quick speeds. When fully broken in, I can get about 8/10 speed-wise using the Wicked rust free bearings which is pretty good for a greased bearing with plastic internals. During the warmer months, my need for speed keeps me away from grease...at least in my experience, it creates too much resistance which is felt especially when doing weekly outings between 18 to 23 miles per session. Of course, I have no experience with the specific grease you mentioned, and would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the speed impact of using that grease as well as whether it eventually breaks in to a quicker speed profile over time.

I do not clean my bearings as often as you. I did however recently take stick of the ones I've got in the house. The smooth one currently in my training wheels are coming up on 15 years. They get cleaned whenever I've skated in the rain, or maybe twice a year. I don't know how many km I skate between cleaning them though.

if you pack your bearings with synthetic NLGI #4 grease, you don't have to maintain the bearings at all. They will last several years through all weather. I'm on year 3 with my 2 dollar bearings. I've literally skated underwater, through sand, mud, goose poop, and i NEVER do anything for the bearings. Wipe the boots off, done.

Also would have been interesting if you treated both sets of bearings the same ie. clean them both out and oil them to be exactly the same.

Just to add, I have a set of bearings on my quads which are from the mid 90's, and with a clean/oil they still run super well

4x110 have more grip and roll more 3 wheel setups are more for kids or maybe doing stunts in a skate park and also 3x125mm is great for marathons as they have much more roll

@@davitrevillatoeasy math in theory... 4x110 would be about 25% faster (minus a bit of extra rolling resistance dependent on surface, PU and bearings... And for longer distance reduced also by more fatigue because of weight 😅)
