These aren't just arrow tips you use for fun shooting. These are meant for hunting. If you want to shoot targets all day long you'll need to get field tips. But yes. Get into Archery. I've been shooting since i was like 10. I'm 24 now. I love the hell out of it. I shoot almost daily.

Excellent review. There are so few people doing reviews like this I really appreciate the effort and the information. FYI - I've found that there is a relatively cheap and easy way to make a deer simulation for broad head testing. Take your wife on a date night and order a rack of ribs from your favorite restaurant. Enjoy, but take all the rib bones home. Now take a sheet of plywood and screw through it into the bones to make a false rib cage roughly the width of a deer. Half the ribs go on the left side and half on the right side. With the rib cage in place, tack a layer of hide on the outside of the bones for the skin and on the inside to provide some "muscle" like resistance. Now for the important part. The "guts" are nothing more than some natural casing wieners stuffed inside the rib cage. With the casing and the meat, they provide a good simulation of cutting through the combination of "stuff" inside the deer. With the "guts" in place, screw another piece of plywood to the top of the ribs to hold everything nice and firm. You now have a miniature deer to accurately test the broad heads. It cost you a date night with the wife (bonus points for you) and a large package of natural casing wieners which is cheaper than ballistics gel any day of the week. Finally, one caution: with the small target area and blades expanding, you need a really good shot because you've really only got about a 2" target to aim for. I tested the Rage 2 Blade this way. That's what finally made me switch from the traditional fixed blade Muzzy's.

I too, am an urban hunter. I need the deer to drop ASAP. I use a Barnett Quad 400 and have gone back and forth from mechanical to fixed. The Rage arrowheads, have been successful with incredible blood trails. I do not like the cost of these arrowheads. Over $10 a head and being in a ground blind, they are often lost. However, with the crossbow, it is almost a surgical strike and have not lost a deer in years. Rarely going more than 30 yards after shooting. And that's with a single bevel fixed head. Great review Cameron. Keep up the great work. I look forward to your reviews, they give me something to consider. For now, I will stick to my fixed arrowheads. Thanks again.

Don Beam I am not as cost sensitive to broadheads as some because I figure I'm saving a lot of money by taking a deer that would otherwise be spent on store-bought beef. At least, that's what I keep telling myself every time I buy more hunting stuff... :)

this resembles a punchcutter mechanical broadhead, but with a blade lock mechanism. The punchcutters, though unique, were banned in most states as they did not inflict lethal wounds. Your review of these blades seems to indicate that you wanted them to work, but the test show they did not. I would not risk using this on any large game, simply not ethical. keep up the good videos.

This is why I will never shoot mechanicals. Something could always go wrong. I'm not going to trust my kill shots to a mechanical device. Fixed blades leave nothing to chance, and that's what I like.

I would try corrugated cardboard between the ballistic gel and the hid to see if that provides the correct "feel" as a proper test medium (testing dry as well as wet). Frankly the best medium is to save the hid from your next hunt (unless someone has one locally) when you hold up a fresh hid ( with hair etc. and if it's all dried out, soak it until it's pliable again) shoot that with a broad head you normally use, and you know what penetration you get , and compare that with the penetration you get with the ballistic media. Granted there will likely be a difference, but if it's 10% or so from the real deal, then you will know what to expect from a test media, without the heavy smelly hid. a test comparison using the corrugated cardboard without the fresh hid and see how close that is to the last test. if it's really close then fine, you now have the correct testing media, otherwise add one or two sheets of cardboard until it's a close match. whats great about this is anyone watching the video should be able to use the same media, and get the same results (or close to it because the only variable's left are the Temp, Humidity and Bow and draw weight. And then continue to use that media on your channel

Tests are definitely inconclusive to say the least, but great job trying. I shoot the Omen 366fps by PSE,, I've never had a deer run away with my arrow, shot through and stuck in the ground every time but one. Late December 2013 I decided to try the Rage hypodermic for the first time, shot a 10pt at 33yds quartering away behind the rib cage and exited the neck, complete blow through and great bloodtrail, filmed the recovery, went 35yds. I've filled a couple hundred tags in four decades, but this was bloodiest of them all. Rarely do I see slower bows get pass throughs with expandables broadheads, that's why I shoot the Omen. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinion on this product, I appreciate it sir.

A forward deploying mechanism seems like a bad design. It should open backwards using the force of the medium to push it open
@LimbDrivenTV
@LimbDrivenTV 7 жыл бұрын
out of the ways a mechanical opens you are correct. However, I would rely on a head that has no moving parts so all of the energy it has when entering is used for cutting instead of deploying blades
@shawncrocker7037
@shawncrocker7037 7 жыл бұрын
STDrepository yes. it would seem like the speed of entry is faster than the speed of the blades opening. I don't see how the medium being shot into could change this. if the blade can't reach a locked open state before contacting the medium...

O.C.B. I don't think this is junk, though. It might work exactly as advertised in live game, and that's all that matters. I thought your testing was credible. and it performed poorly why do you think it would be better on a live animal? If that were the case why use the gelatin for testing?and I think on heavy boned animals like elk or hogs you are going to have similar results just my 40 odd years of bow hunting.I think I bought the 3rd draw lock Jerry and his dad made so I am not opposed to a better idea.anyway good to talk to ya If we all thought the same way it would be boring around here I hope you keep up your vids I do enjoy them.
@TWANGnBANG
@TWANGnBANG 10 жыл бұрын
O.C.B. I used gel because I was hoping the gel would work, but I explained why it didn't as well as why it could very well work just fine in game. Gel is not live tissue, and the way it behaves is very detrimental to a broadhead with blades that must push forward to deploy.
@o.c.b.2998
@o.c.b.2998 10 жыл бұрын
I understand about gel but when you shot the plywood I could see the marks where the blades opened but didnt lock so if that was a rib bone you essentially shot it with a practice tip mammals are basically 98% water it dosent matter what your projectile is in gel it will be as close as you can get to tissue but thats not what the problem is as I see it my problem is that if you make a bad shot most mech. broadheads will just fall out the hole they made going in but with a good fixed blade every step the animal takes is working it every limb or tree it passes stirs it inside the animal the old bear heads if the deer made 20 yds he was lucky. for me this is a friendly debate and I mean no disrespect to you or your channel I just happen to disagree

Seems that the piston mechanism for deployment is the main failure in this head. The initial impact deploys the blades, but only until the blades meet some resistance then that pushes them back in. 4 individual blades at 2" a pair seems like a lot of wasted KE. I can't imagine this head will make it very far in the market as is, not to mention a limited available market due to the barbed blades.

now that bow season is over here i have to admit that with these broad heads i have far less pass through. with most broad heads out there i get clean pass through. it could be that my bow is not strong enough but the last time i had it checked it was shooting at 290ft/s. i typically aim for long and heart shots so it could be that the fins are catching on the rib cage and slowing down. at the end of the season i fired 6 arrows and only 1 head went through but the shaft still was left in the body. do to the lack of pass through though i was unable to recover and reuse any of my arrows this season. like he said if your bow isn't shooting 325-360 ft/s i would avoid these if you aim for the heart and lungs.

+ksagame9289 maybe no pass through means that the broadhead is doing so much work/damage that it doesn't pass through. When I used fixed blades on my crossbow they all passed through and I liked that. Then I switched to rage for field tip accuracy and usually they don't pass through but when you hit soft tissue only they are amazing. I have it bone with them also and still recovered the deer although there was little blood. TwangnBang thanks for all the videos.

Mick Wrath That is solid muscle and will not behave at all like a shot that slips between or behind ribs, which is where I always place my arrows. I cringe every time I see someone testing broadheads that way, actually. :)

Oh definitely not there is only one way to show how it will perform on game for sure. How about a slab of pork ribs covered with hide in front of the gel block? Again not perfect but it may show if the blades will break on bone and it may open her up into the locked position? It's time someone came out with a calibrated arrow testing media ;) you sir have picked a conundrum to test lol

Ýmir Atlason Really all the southern and some west states are the way to go. In Oklahoma, where im from land is cheap, housing is cheap, and you can do pretty much anything. we have open/concealed firearm carry. No stupid guns laws like magazine restriction or bullet buttons. There are other good states too, but its either OK or AZ for me.

Our Country gets a person To not think of a encounter With death but it always comes back I think every one won that day I think You need to stop betting your self up over it you was a Much Bigger Hero that day for what you did not do rather then what you could of don and Life is too short, A hero Is born every day not all get a metal, Shinny boots, Or a Parade But at lest You did not get a pine Box and flag Or and real damage that lasted more then hurt pride but be proud not ever one comes home....Love ya Bro You put out good stuff...

Hey dude, I am a quite new to using crossbows. I have bought a 150lb draw weight crossbow, and I want to start doing some shooting. I am wondering, do you have any preferences on Targets for 5-15 metre range. I am really enjoying your videos, and I watch them every night. Haha :) . Thanks - Isaac.

AceOfSpades I'm a fan of Spyderweb targets. They'll stop fast arrows yet still allow easy arrow removal.

Kenny VanCleave No, that means I'm not going to use this myself until I hear good field reports. I take several deer every year, though usually from a suburban area where I don't want to risk a deer running too far before dying. This broadhead will kill a deer with a good shot whether or not it opens, but it will only do what I want it to do if it fully deploys.

Okay, a few things. First, I wanted to apologize for what I said the last time we talked. I was out of line, and I really think that set us off on the wrong foot. Second, I love these demonstrations, but I was wondering if you could tell me how effective this particular arrowhead might be in a self-defense scenario.

It Will Work the same way on an animal, the wound will stop an attacker because of the pain and your attacker might bleed out.

ya... this isnt going to "knock soemone down" if soemone breaks down your door, and your armed... BOTH of your adrenilin pumps are going to go off the charts... attacker and defender arnt going to feel much pain. a bullet hits with over 2000 pounds of force. a bow doesnt. that bullet will literally knock someone on their ass. you could shoot him with a bow... and even hit him in the heart... but he is still going to be able to pull the trigger on his gun a few times, and even still run at you for a while. up to 3 mins!!! like i said... a bullet stops shit in its tracks.

I would like to see a video of shooting through blind screen , I seen a few vids. I pulled down my screen when i shot my doe still afraid to shoot through it with my crossbow . One thing I found out my vendetta rangefinder wont work through it but at close range 20 yrds you dont need it but at longer distances just pull the screen down.

1digitalwatcher I've never had any problems shooting mechanicals through my blind mesh. Test it first with your blind and your broadheads regardless of what you see on the internet, though, because every combo will behave differently.
