The original cut of Let It Be, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, has finally been restored and released. It only took a few decades. I react to the film for the first time with the context from Peter Jackson's Get Back docuseries. Did it deserve its time ousted from the public eye? Let's find out!
Disclaimer, even though this should be obvious, this is indeed a reaction video to a film about the Beatles. That means that not only do I need to cut around enough to get this reaction not blocked, but I also need to be leery of how much Beatles music I can play throughout the video, as using their music on KZfaq oftentimes results in the video being blocked worldwide. Very sorry for the choppy editing but it is the only way this video can exist. I hope my commentary throughout is at least somewhat interesting and not an annoyance/hinderance to your enjoyment. Thanks all in advance for your understanding. Peace!

Maxwell is a very clever construction. People hate on it because John and George bitched it out so bad, but it really is interesting.

This was fantastic! I thought I was clicking on a review; instead I got a full blown reaction video! And by a totally learned Beatlefreak! TOTALLY agree: I think of "Get Back" as a great "making of" documentary! "Let It Be" is the product that they're working on, IN "Get Back"! So I totally agree with Peter Jackson when he says that he never planned for "Get Back" to replace "Let It Be". And watching it with you right now, I can see that "Get Back" has only made "Let It Be" that much better! There are so many great, iconic performances in "Let It Be"'; and the edit of the rooftop concert is perfection. I was saying two years ago that ideally, you watch "Get Back" up until the rooftop concert......then put on the end of "Let It Be"! PS: Don't Let Me Down was on the "Hey Jude" album (aka "the Beatles Again"). It came out in 1970. Bizarrely the first two songs were Can't Buy Me Love and I Should Have Known Better! But then it was Paperback Writer, Rain, Lady Madonna and Revolution (single version) Side 2 was Hey Jude, Old Brown Shoe, Don't Let Me Down and The Ballad Of John And Yoko. So until "Past Masters", all those singles had a "place" on "Hey Jude". In the USA, virtually all of the singles and b-sides found "homes" on various albums. To this day, I sequence all those songs (minus the two Hard Day's Night tracks) together. They flow WAY better than "Past Masters".

Oh man, yeah I have heard about the Hey Jude album. What a weird tracklist on Side A! I know they only did it because of the reason cited in your comment, but still! Thanks so much for the kind words! Let It Be, while a tad slow and not as in-depth as Get Back, is still a fun experience! Awesome to see the faces behind the album. Makes me mourn for lost conversations and rehearsals from their other albums

The recording of Dig It was 15 minutes in total with less than a minute included on the album.

This is not the original 1970 "Let It Be" cut, but it’s close to that. The sound is way much better on this 2024 version, but it lucks some dialogs and adds some new ones. And little bits of visual differences are brought as well.

Totally agree about the album version of the guitar solo. And also about the Spector version of Long And Winding Road. (Actually, I feel the same way about the whole album. I like the takes he used, I like the sequencing, I like the scraps of dialog he chose to edit in, and I like that he got to do his "Phil Spector" thing on a few tracks. What's the point of having Phil Spector if you're not going to have him do what he does? I do like the spare, soulful version of "Long And Winding Road", sans strings. But Paul didn't hate Phil's arrangement enough to omit it when he'd do the song in concert! 🤣 PS: Shake Rattle And Roll was originally done by Joe Turner and then immediately covered by Bill Haley. (Both were hits)

LOL I had no idea Paul left them in in concert performances. He likes them more than he lets on. But yeah the structure of Let It Be is certainly very unique. Standoutish, if you will

Keen observation - the 'Let It Be' album sounding perhaps a bit disjointed because of the contrast between the 'Spector sheen' and the 'McCartney stripped-down' sound. I like your suggestion about collecting the different styles on either side. Also, there's the exclusion of "Don't Let Me Down and the inclusion of 'Across the Universe'. Makes for an uneven platter - but what a delicious one.

Yeah a few years ago I actually compiled my own Let It Be record combining my favorite cuts from the original album and Naked into one playlist. Made it years ago so it's probably not reflective of my views now, so it's probably just as disjoint as the original record! Thanks for watching!!

The single version of Let It Be had a different guitar solo (= one with the Leslie) to either the film, the album, or Let It Be Naked. Shake Rattle & Roll was written by Jesse Stone - but Joe Turner and Bill Haley both made different changes to the lyrics. Long & Winding album-version was actually orchestrated by Richard Hewson. [Obvious comment - if Paul hated Spector/Hewson's L&WR so much, why did he imitate it for the Broad Street version of the song?] [Obvious comment - when John plays his pre-written solos on Get Back, you may find yourself suddenly itching to hear the Rutles' Get Up & Go). [Obligatory comment: Billy Preston+Rev James Cleveland>Michael Jackson>Wade & James. Enough?]

They have a documentary THE BEATLES IN INDIA. It’s pretty good. I like your review. I saw it in the theaters when it first was release. I of course knew the Beatles had broken up the month before. Looking at the film back then I never saw it as a breakup film. They look like a band working together to get a album recorded.

I completely agree: the timing of when the movie was released colored people's feelings about it. (And also the edit!) No worries about having to edit the movie up.....we've all seen Let it Be a million times! Plus, that's the nature of reaction channels! I wish there was something else you haven't seen, Beatle-wise! You've seen Anthology, right? I've got a rough cut of Anthology that has all kinds of things that were left out of it! You could always do a reaction to that if you want! There's Ringo's movie "That'll Be The Day", he's really good in that one. And then there's "What's Happening In The USA" as well as "The Beatles First US Visit" (ie: The Maysles footage from February '64). Those are rare and hard to get at the moment, but if you want to do a reaction to them, I'd be happy to share my copies with you. (Needless to say, you've seen Yellow Sub, Help, Magical Mystery Tour and A Hard Day's Night!!!!)

Anthology I have seen, yes. Here's a secret though...I haven't seen Help, MMT, or Yellow Submarine! I should hardly even be considered a Beatles fan!! But I think what should be at the top of my list in terms of Beatles related content are the solo albums. I've only listened to a handful of John, Paul, and George's records...none of Ringo's. This isn't becoming a reaction channel any time soon but those solo albums I need to get around to! Thanks for the suggestions!!

Excellent observations! I don't mind the Phil Spector additions on Long and Winding Road, either. I know one of the issues in India was that John was appalled at the Maharishi's indiscretions while Paul and George felt that the Maharishi was "human" and not a perfect being and should not be judged so harshly. But for John, it was a deal-breaker and it was all over for him.

Hey, thanks for watching! Checked out your channel a bit. Love your story with Harrison replying but how could you rank Revolver so low?? At least we can agree that Abbey Road is in the top three lol. Phil Spector's production, while out of place, adds a sense of weird uniqueness to Let It Be that I appreciate. I think he did a great job producing All Things Must Pass. As far as the Beatles in India there seems to be a lot to that period of time, the Maharishi just being one source of tension.

Also, unlike the other two, Paul (and Ringo, who left early) was never really into transcendental meditation and didn't feel the need to idolize its teacher.
