The London police showed up during this song to try to shut them down because of noise and traffic concerns. You can see them milling around on the rooftop. During the final song “Get Back” the police shut off George and John’s amps, but Harrison turned his back on in defiance and their manager turned John’s back on. They finished after that song. Lennon finished the concert with “I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we've passed the audition."

Two young policemen, at least one still alive. They pretty much let the concert finish but the traffic is a big issue. I've known the area very well from 1978 and quite well from way before that. Gridlock prevents ambulance and fire engines getting where they need to be. Doesn't take much to stop everything moving. Almost arrived late for our son's wedding ten years ago and had to walk the last couple of miles to Langham Place.

Yes, the third guy on the guitar is George Harrison. I recommended a week or so ago that you listened to Prince’s guitar solo on the Tribute to George Harrison’s ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’. Well that’s George Harrison himself right there. And on the tribute, you can see his son playing guitar. Looking exactly like a young version of his dad. And so so obviously full of joy (as all the other musicians on that tribute do too) to watch and hear Prince perform. I believe Prince said that he didn’t want to rehearse with the rest of the band on the tribute but just wanted to turn up on the day and surprise them. And so he did. His performance is thrilling. Amazing. (Prince, maaaan!!) X

Ringo Starr was the drummer and George Harrison was the other guitar player. McCartney and Lennon wrote and sang most of their songs, but they let Harrison contribute a song or two on every album, and some of their very best songs ended up being Harrison songs. Here Comes the Sun, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Something were among his and their best. They all pretty much sang the songs they wrote, although they sometimes threw a song to Ringo to sing. Harrison's voice is difficult to differentiate from Lennon's at first until you get to know them better. Because Harrison only got one or two song per album, when they broke up, he had so many songs stockpiled that he put out a triple album called All Things Must Pass that was tremendous and had multiple hits!

You might find it interesting to experience the Beatles chronologically. Their music shows a progression over time, as they experimented and grew. I would also say that beyond appreciating the music as it stands, you will gain a greater appreciation by putting it in historical context. Everything they did was new. They influenced and changed the music for all. As others have noted, this rooftop performance was at the end.

Mick Jagger's nickname for the Beatles was "The Four Headed Monster". John and Paul actually wrote the Rolling Stone's first hit to break Billboards top 20, "I Wanna be Your Man." Paul and John were walking in London and Keith and Mick pulled up in a taxi and yelled out the window, "Hey, we're recording right now, got any songs for us?" They said, sure if we can share the taxi. They had the song halfway finished, so Paul and John went to the corner of the studio and finished it right there. Mick and Keith decided they needed to up their writing game after watching John and Paul whip that out so fast.

The main dynamic in the Beatles was the songwriting partnership between John Lennon and Paul McCartney... they met as teens and when they started writing songs together, they bounced ideas whenever each came up w/ a song... They made a pact that every song they wrote together would be credited as 'Lennon/ McCartney'... For example, Lennon wrote and sang the song 'Help!'... and McCartney arranged the harmonies... McCartney wrote & sang "We can work it out"... and Lennon added a verse to the song. So, for the most part, The Beatles were guided creatively by Lennon and McCartney... The rooftop concert was played in early 1969 on The Beatles' label Apple Corp. building at the time as a free concert... American R&B singer and keyboardist (the late) Billy Preston was invited to the studio sessions in 1968 and he was there playing organ w/ The Beatles on the rooftop. However, the 1968 sessions were problematic... disagreements erupted and after The Beatles released the album 'Abbey Road' in 1969, John Lennon announced that he was leaving the band... Paul McCartney went public w/ the Beatles' breakup in 1970 when he sued the other Beatles to terminate their partnership and divide their assets (McCartney said later that it was to keep then-manager Allen Klein from stealing from the band and he had no other option because McCartney never signed a contract w/ Klein - the other 3 did...) George Harrison played lead guitar and some lead vocals ('mustache guy')... He started writing songs as well, if not as many in the beginning like 'Think for yourself'... 'I need you'... However, in later years of The Beatles, he became frustrated that his songs were not given the same urgency by Paul McCartney that was given to John Lennon's songs ... Still, Harrison's songs got better and he wrote and sang major Beatles songs like - 'Something' ... 'Here comes the Sun'... 'Taxman' ... 'Blue Jay Way'... 🔥🔥 Harrison learned to play Indian sitar from his friend Ravi Shankar... he played it on The Beatles song 'Norwegian wood (This bird has flown)' After the Beatles split in 1970, George Harrison had accumulated a lot of songs that he recorded on his 1971 solo album 'All things must pass'... He became famous for organizing & performing in the NYC charity event 'Concert for Bangladesh' to help the refugees that were in India fleeing genocide in Bangladesh from the Pakistan military... The concert was filmed and can be seen today. Unlike the other Beatles, George Harrison was quiet and introverted... he had a solo career & eventually recorded a 'supergroup' album 'The Traveling Wilburys' w/ major icons like Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, etc. in the 80's... Harrison retired from touring in 1992 and passed away from cancer in 2001 (R.I.P.) Ringo Starr (drums) joined The Beatles in 1962 and was not a major songwriter in the band... His singing voice was deeper and not as versatile as the other 3, but he was still asked to do lead vocals for a few Beatles songs like - 'With a little help from my friends'... 'I wanna be your man' ... 'Yellow submarine'... He still records and tours today as a solo artist.

First off, I just discovered you about a week ago and have really enjoyed your journey into my world of music (I was 9 years old when the Beatles played the Ed Sullivan show for the first time and I was hooked). I'm 69 now. Just a few thoughts and FYI's for you. John Lennon was famous for his wordplay. He wrote a few books of his nonsensical "poems and short stories" called "In His Own Write." See? Another play on words. His second book was, "A Spaniard In The Works." This was a wordplay on "Spanner" in the works. A spanner in English jargon is what we in North America would call a wrench. They wrote and finally played these songs live in the space of a month, as Ringo was committed to start work on a movie the next day. On one of the songs played here on the rooftop of their headquarters in London, John wasn't so sure he could remember all the words so had one the assistants type them out and he sat below John's feet with them on a clipboard. This "concert" was performed in late January, so it was very cold. George Harrison was the "other" guitarist, as many have mentioned. He usually had one or two of his songs on their albums, but it wasn't until the band broke up that his incredible songwriting skills would shine. His first solo release was a 3 album set called, "All Things Must Pass." Ringo Starr (given name Richard Starkey) is considered one of the finest innovators and perfect compliment to the Beatles songs by a bevy of the rock world's best drummers. Plenty of KZfaq videos of drummers saying so. And at almost 84 he is still performing. When the police finally were able to stop the performance and wrangle them off the roof, John quipped to the assembled onlookers, "Thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we passed the audition! Laughter ensued.

At one point they occupied the 1 thru 5 slots on the Top 40 Hits List and often occupied multiple slots. They are the most influential, most covered band in rock history. Their breakup was followed by successful solo careers for all 4 of them. Check out A Day in the Life, She’s Leaving Home, In My Life, Norwegian Wood, I Want You (She’s So Heavy), I’m Looking Through You, Oh Darling, Here Comes the Sun, Something, Yer Blues, Helter Skelter, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Let it Be, and Two of Us for starters; the list goes on and on.

"Day in the Life" and "Helter Skelter" are just two of their genre-defining songs. Must listens! Along with "Come Together", "I want you", Hey Bulldog, etc. The list goes on and on. If you watch the "Don't Let Me Down" video closely, you'll see who I call the "fifth Beatle", the legendary Billy Preston on keyboards. He's tucked away to the side in the video. In my opinion, he was the glue that kept tbe group together in their final years. Note that the Beatles had given up live touring in the mid 1960s, as they couldn't even hear themselves sing due to all the screaming girls. They proceeded to mainly focus on studio work and rarely played live together again. The 20 min or so "concert" on the rooftop of Abbey Road studios in 1969 in the UK was the final time they ever played together again. You should watch all of this historic event. No one knew at the time that this would be the last ever Beatles live performance......RIP John Lennon in 1980 and George Harrison in the early 2000s. ❤

There will never be a band like the Beatles, ever again. They came in playing rock and roll, then changed it upside down when they started writing their own songs, and going in directions that shook everyone. They were innovative and took risks. Other bands were always waiting to see what they did next. I was 13 when I first heard them...and their music was a big part of our lives. This song was at the end of their collaboration, 1969. Listen to the early stuff, and then listen to how they evolved.

All Four Beatles were lead singers and all had hit songs after the band broke up. They all also sang hits while with the band. Truly the greatest band ever. Their vocals, their musicianship and overall performances were beyond the times and will last long after us.

Going completely by memory (and I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong anywhere): Unannounced performance on the roof of their business offices (Apple Corps) in London; the date was 30 Jan 1969 (shortly after 12:30pm) and this was their final performance as a full band. Because it was unannounced, they had not gotten any permits or made arrangements with local authorities, including police, so no crowd control, no traffic control. Being unannounced, there was no crowd that otherwise would have gathered in the street to see this wildly-popular band that had not performed for an audience in a number of years. It did stop traffic and draw a small crowd. Local police showed up to shut them down because of complaints by local businesses and concerns about the crowd, the traffic and the noise, but being the Beatles the band continued on, completing what was only a 42-minute set. Your lack of knowledge about band personnel and song catalog is shocking. I'm not faulting you, just sad that you have missed out on something that was an international cultural upheaval that literally changed the world. There is no drawback over pressing on to educate yourself about them. The Beatles innovated in music, initiating what developed into world music, progressive rock, and heavy metal. They developed studio techniques, invented new sounds, added new electric instruments, and broadened their musical tastes. From their first American concerts, their contracts insisted that there was no racial barriers to who could attend or where they could sit. They brought Eastern spirituality to the Western world that is still mainstream. When they stopped touring in 1966, they began making what we can now call music videos, to debut their new songs. I believe "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" was the first ones, in 1967. That's just a hint of the impact of the Beatles. You won't get all of it all at once; some will sneak up on you. I still remember the day, after following them for 43 years, that I realized the harpsichord bridge in the middle of "In My Life" (written by Paul McCartney, released in 1965) was actually Pachelbel's Canon in D Major. McCartney and Lennon met when they were 14 & 15 years old, respectively. When they started writing songs, they agreed to share credit,,, even if it was a solo effort. George was brought in not too long after. It took him longer to start writing his own songs, but his contributions were too often pushed off the albums, something that by the late 1960s led to the band's breakup and the band members heading off to do solo albums. Recommendations: Paul McCartney: "Blackbird", "Helter Skelter", "In My Life", "Get Back", "Penny Lane", cover of "Long Tall Sally" John Lennon: "Norwegian Wood", "Imagine", "Give Peace A Chance", "Tomorrow Never Knows", "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" George Harrison: "Something", "If I Needed Someone", "It's All Too Much", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Got My Mind Set On You", Wah-Wah Ringo Starr (only wrote 6 songs for the Beatles): "Octopus's Garden", "What Goes On", "Don't Pass Me By" (all 'meh') Note: "Helter Skelter" Considered the first Heavy Metal song (released 1968), it is forever associated with disturbed mass murderer Charles Manson because he interpreted the song and lyrics to mean something satanic. Actually, it's about a piece of playground equipment. In the UK, a helter skelter is a spiral sliding board; the lyrics are descriptive of using the equipment. "When I get to the bottom I go back to the top of the slide Where I stop and I turn and I go for a ride Till I get to the bottom and I see you again" McCartney said that he was "using the symbol of a helter skelter as a ride from the top to the bottom; the rise and fall of the Roman Empire - and this was the fall, the demise." He later said that the song was a response to critics who accused him of writing only sentimental ballads and being "the soppy one" of the band.

The phrase 'You done me good' is colloquial slang and not good English. People from several areas of England might use it in an informal way and it's pretty common in Liverpool where The Beatles come from. But given that pop songs often feature poor grammar, it's a good lyrical device and fits in very well here. And when you hear the band members speak in interview they're all articulate and use good grammar.

I hope he sees your explanation. 👍 ____ "Done me good" has also been around in the U.S. for at least most of my life (I'm 62). And it may have evolved from, & possibly been a counterpoint to, "she done me wrong." Subsequently, I recall hearing "done me dirty" (which did not have the same cheeky meaning of John's lyrics. It just means someone did something hurtful.). I associate all of these with the southern states, but that's just my impression.

Just FYI, the guy on keyboards was Billy Preston who had quite the career himself. But he was often called the 5th Beatle and added a lot of feature sound and style to some of the later recordings. Check out some of his solo stuff: Will it Go Round in Circles and Nothin from Nothing being two of his biggest hits. Also the guitar player you didn't know was George Harrison. The tribute concert they did for him after his death is one of the best things ever. I would love to see you watch some of those songs. Featuring people like Billy Preston, Paul and Ringo (John was already deceased), Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne (from ELO), Tom Petty and many others.

And Ren mentions Let It Be and John Lennon in Seven Sins. There's a video of them busking Come Together, while Ren raps over the main riff. It's not on their channel, though, but might be on the Brighton Busking channel.

A Beatles track that you might find interesting is Tomorrow Never Knows, from the 1966 album Revolver. Even today it's a stunner - God knows what people would have thought in '66. It was one of their first psychedelic songs, with a ton of tape loops overdubbed onto the track - an early version of using sampling the old fashioned way. It also has a sitar, Ringo playing a slightly strange repetitive drum beat, Paul going nuts on one single bass note, backwards guitars, phased vocals - it's a whole acid trip in just under 3 minutes.
