The scene where he's taking a bath and looks up to find that dude in his ceiling was both terrifying and fucking hilarious

Very great analysis. Also…. The monster to many just like the film can have different meanings. Think about it his mother lied to him his whole life so for her to say that this thing is his father I don’t but it . I believe it is a metaphor for beaus mother sheltering him from girls and other females so much that he of course never used his “penis”. His mother kept it locked away in the attic forever shamed to the point where this physically represented image of masculinity just grew and grew and grew and grew to the point where it’s become almost unatural how it even fits in that attic.

Ari takes us to another dimension of fear and inocence. I find it interesting how beau's only guilt (according to his mom that is) was he didnt reciprocate her love for her. Thus her final straw was when he almost strangled her to death after berating and jarring him for not being her perfect son.

The trial scene reminded me of the book of Albert Camus where Meursault was trialed for not crying at his mother funeral

You brought my attention to many things, one thing I still can’t quite figure out, is the point behind him losing his family and being imprisoned in the imaginary sequence during the play, and I know that the beginning of that sequence was supposed to show what Beau’s life would be like in his mind if he had some agency, but I don’t get what the rest of that sequence was supposed to mean.

This movie may not be for everyone, but I for one enjoyed the trip that it takes you on. Great 6 minute summary!

I hoped for a happy ending. It was very disappointed in the end.

Great video!!! Ari first wrote the script in 2014, the second half and ending changed alot from the script. If you read the 2014 version its more humorous and doesnt go into the over bearing mother narrative as much, I think if he made the movie I read from the original script it would have done better. I still love this version too.

I find Beau Was Afraid a brilliant movie. depends on how you understand it. For me, it was Us. Us who are living on the shadows if the past, the shadows of our family that wants to protect us ending up controlling us, the society that we're surrounded, and everything that happens to our life that sometimes doesn't always on our favor even if we know what we did was right, in the end you'll be judged by the society based on what they've seen and heard.. and you living with the truth but doesn't have voice to tell what's true nd your feelings and your pain. That's life. That's our life. That is how I understand the movie. I can't recommend it. since I think it was only for those who are willing to understand it.

I thought beau is sick that why he seems that kind of things like police and other wanted to kill him. And I thought maybe he have another soul in side like moonknight that's why he reacts like that. But that was bullshit what about beau, why he feel like that, he was right about his mom

I watched the movie and frankly didn’t like it at all, even though I admire Ari and Joaquin Phoenix. Found it to be too slow, after a point I stopped caring for Beau.

I recently had the unfortunate experience of watching that terrible movie. that is , without a doubt, holds the title for the worst film I have ever seen in my entire life.

That movie was awful! The acting sucked, the plot was dumb and lame.

I can't believe I wasted three hours of my life watching this CRAP movie!!!! I liked most of the actors in it so I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for it to make some kind of sense - but it never did....... right up until the very end of the movie. HORRIBLE MOVIE! Words cannot describe how bad this movie was. Do yourself a favor and skip this trash.
