It’s a home like this that I would rather live than the house I live in now. Real beauty is in the workmanship of old homes. They were built by men to stand the test of time, storm, and in some places, even war. Kappy, your excitement in finding the former maid stairs was so sweet. History: When this home was built, people detestably known as servants were in this century known as maids, butlers, valets, nannies, and paid for their services. No, they weren’t paid a grand sum, but they were paid.

While he was showing us that room and commenting on the "trophies," I flashed to my impish cousin. My dad belonged to our local Moose Lodge (played on the "Dartball" team) and when my aunt, uncle, and my two cousins visited during an annual Christmas party, Cousin Jerry, kept joking about the mounted moose head, a standard feature of a Moose Lodge hall. We ate popcorn out of those pleated paper containers, like large fluted cupcake baking cups. I went back for something else to eat and when I came back, Jerry had climbed up on a chair, put the popcorn "dish" on top the moose's head like an old-fashioned page boy or French soldier, and stuck a used cigarette butt in its mouth. I tried not to snigger while feeling like Doom was on its way! Trophy, indeed. Stay safe.

What a terrific house, Kappy! I can imagine people from "The Great Gatsby" having this as a vacation home. From the glimpse in your previous video I had an idea of the interior of this house but it was even better than I imagined. Here's my theory: the toilet by the servants' staircase may have been installed after the house was built, maybe long after, for a resident who had difficulty getting around. I noticed a track along the staircase for a mechanized chair that would take someone up and down who would otherwise be unable to use the stairs. My grandmother who had a heart condition had two of those chairs in her house: to the upstairs and down to the basement. In this house you can see the chair in a folded up position at 6:48. A "machine chair" , as we called it, would not have worked on the main staircase. The picture of over the downstairs fireplace seems to a print of a painting by Jamie Wyeth.

Ah, thanks for confirming that my eyesight wasn't wrong. I don't remember: was there a full bathroom downstairs? It would make sense to add a "Porcelain Convenience" in an odd spot if this was one of the places where the only full bathroom was on the second floor. I've known quite a few places where this was so. Good health and stay safe.
@andrewbrendan15793 жыл бұрын
@@oldenweery7510 I took a second look: there's a toilet by the servant's staircase but I didn't see a sink anywhere in that space. I think the plumbing was added in maybe the only space where it could be worked unobtrusively into the first floor.
@oldenweery75103 жыл бұрын
@@andrewbrendan1579 That makes sense, especially if there was someone in the house who was elderly and/or slightly disabled. If there isn't a bathroom on the first floor---and I don't remember seeing one---maybe the little "accomodation" was added for his or her use. I'm 80 and if I lived in a large house with the bathroom on the second floor I'd be like the joke book title, "One Mile to the Outhouse, by Willie Makit." Stay safe.

Wow Kappy ! This home is probably the most elegant and well appointed you have ever done a video on . The style of woodwork is that of true Master Craftsman. Closets were just not built in in those days . That desk downstairs (you did a close up of) has hidden drawers in it . Thanks for sharing , stay safe , stay well .

That's a Beautiful Old Sunny Kitchen! I'd Love to wake up & be in that kitchen every morning! And the old Woodwork throughout is a Beauty, as well! This sure would make a Lovely Restored Home! I often wonder why people abandon such Beautiful houses? Especially this one.

Yes, I love this house. It really needs to be restored! Btw, “your room” in that house had no radiator. You would freeze in the winter. Of course, I don’t know how cold it gets down south. Thanks for the tour!

This is a real beauty! It doesn’t seem like it would take much to fix it up and bring it back to life. The woodwork , hardware , fireplaces and built ins have so much character. This is a stunning home. This is a great find Kappy! Thanks so much for sharing. Can’t what for the next one! You’re the best!😊

Gorgeous bones. I would say a senior man lived here and either went into an old folks home or passed away. Looks like he had a work from home situation with the file cabinets. Either way, stunning home. Good work!
