Please join me in this video, Valerie Hobson - Famous Grave and The Profumo Affair.
Valerie Hobson has become just as famous for her second husband, John Profumo's indiscretions with Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies, which became known as 'The Profumo Affair' as for her own famous performances on stage and screen in epics like David Lean's version of 'Great Expectations' and the successful stage performance in 'The King and I' which ran at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane for a year with Valerie Hobson playing the governess 'Anna'.
We take flowers and visit Valerie Hobson's final resting place at the Profumo Mausoleum in St. Peter's Churchyard, Hersham.

Thank you so much for this. Valerie Hobson deserves to be remembered more for her acting career rather than her second husband's misbehaviour. In The Rocking Horse Winner, she gave an excellent performance as the greed-driven mother but my favourite performance of hers is in Kind Hearts and Coronets where she gave a beautifully ironical portrayal of a puritanical Victorian wife. Valerie Hobson was so much more than just her involvement in the 1963 scandal!

You’re very welcome! Thank you for you lovely comment - I adore Valerie - and for me I truly love her performance as Estella in Great Expectations! Although the Rocking Horse Winner takes some beating!!!! I also think she dealt with her husband’s 1963 scandal - elegantly! I’m not sure there are many that would have been so dignified!

I remember Valerie Hobson playing Estelle in Great Expectations and if memory serves me correctly the young Estelle was played by Jean Simmons with Valerie Hobson being the later life version. Good Morning Shar. What a great actress, I too loved the film ‘Great Expectations’ and some of my favourites ‘Meet Me Tonight’ ‘This Happy Breed’ ‘Oliver Twist’ …the list goes on lol. I was aware of the Purfumo Affair, but only because of the film ‘Scandal’ then my lovely late Mum, told me about it all and how it rocked the Government, which back in the 60’s was indeed more of a Scandal!! She was a marvellous actress, and when watching her play Estelle opposite the lovely John Mills, I thought how cruel she was, but how fascinating!! And what a stellar cast, Alec Guinness, Finlay Currie (loved him in ‘When the Bells go Down’) Jean Simmons, and the lovely Richard George. Thank you for another interesting insight into these wonderful actors, Long may it continue. R. I. P. Valerie and God Bless. 😊🌹💐 x

Morning Tracy! I agree - some of my favourite films for sure! I particularly love Charles Dickens - and often a film inspired by a great novel can be disappointing but not this one! It was a brilliant film which I think stands the test of time. I’m deeply interested in the Profumo Affair - it’s so interesting with so many connections - including the Krays - Mandy Rice-Davies annoyed one of them but it’s never been clear which one 🤭 but it gave Peter Rachman a problem at the time (Mandy was his ‘girl’ at that time - after Christine had been!) it was all very unsavoury but oh so interesting! I only found out while making this video that my cousin used to see Christine Keeler quite regularly out and about in Chelsea where my cousin grew up! Absolutely fascinated! Jean Simmons was wonderful - another of my childhood favourites! Jean and Diana Dors both auditioned for Black Narcissus 1947 - Diana was convinced she had the part but it went to Jean! I’m currently working on the next video - I hope you’ll enjoy it! Thank you so much for your support and for your lovely comment ❤️ Hope you have a wonderful day! Xx

I only know Valerie Hobson from the Profumo affair!! It was enlightening to hear about her successful acting 🎭 career, which was overshadowed by the Profumo Affair. I find the Scandal fascinating. I saw the film 🎥 Scandal” in the 1980s. I loved the 1960s nostalgia of it all. The ending was very poignant when it stated that no one turned up for the funeral of Stephen Ward. I also watched a television drama📺a couple of years ago. Perhaps one of your next videos could be a respectful and sympathetic portrayal of those involved in the Scandal. Often I’ll see a name I don’t recognise but I know you’re going to be so informative and within seconds I’m reminded I have seen them before but just didn’t remember their name. Valerie appeared in one of my all time favourite films, Great Expectations, no remake ever came close to this masterpiece. I watched the film Scandal many years ago but don’t remember Valerie being mentioned, (she must’ve been though, obviously), so this is all very enlightening. Love the fact half her ashes were interred and half scattered as per her wishes🥰 May I say thank you for visiting all the graves you do and, rather than being a morbid experience, celebrating the lives of these wonderful people and making it a beautiful experience for us every time with your depth of knowledge, the beautiful scenery and your comforting voice. 🙏🕊🌹xx

Thank you so much for this kind and thoughtful comment! What a beautiful start to the week! You have made my day! Valerie was very supportive of John throughout the whole horrible episode which never truly went away! But she kept her thoughts very much to herself and never went to either the media or Christine Keeler with them - she was very dignified ❤️ I loved Great Expectations too! David Leans version is so far unbeatable in my opinion - I agree with you on that - it’s so atmospheric! I am incredibly interested in the thing but films and books do tend to focus on Stephen Ward, John Profumo, Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies - I love researching everyone on the periphery - it must have been an incredible experience to live through - and actually some of them such as Peter Rachman didn’t even live to see the trial! I could talk about them all non stop 🤣

What an amazing Lady. Notwithstanding her own talents on the stage & screen, her strength of character standing by her husband and the scandal he found himself, at the centre of. I've made a few apologies in my lifetime, but haven't gone all the way to Venice and apologised. Was this how the movers & shakers of that time did things? I first heard of Valerie Hobson when the Profumo scandal broke in about May of 1963. I just saw her in "The Years Between" (1946.) She stars with Flora Robson, Michael Redgrave and James McKechnie in this wonderful WWII drama based on a play by Daphne du Maurier. I urge everyone to see this film who admires Valerie. It is on KZfaq and it is riveting. Ironically, Valerie's life seemed to follow the same trajectory as the war widow in "The Years Between." Both sacrificed personal happiness on the altar of Duty. Her marriage to Profumo was no bed of roses and while he made his peace with his disgrace and redeemed himself through charitable work and, some say, even found a new mistress, Valerie was more long suffering. I hope she found some happiness after the scandal. That fiasco ruined so many lives.

I’m not sure why she stood by him like she did - although I do think they were very different times as you say and I’m sure she did what she thought was the best for everyone involved including their children - she and Profumo also threw themselves into charity work afterwards and focused very much on that. Christine Keeler was surprised at how dignified Valerie was under the circumstances - she said she never said a bad word about Christine - and that surprised her - if she said something in private it never got back to Christine!

Hello Shar, very quick comment on this amazing video. As an actress, a short career, with some fair rolls😊 But her choice to be of the time and becoming a wife and mother and becoming a part of an historical event that brought down a government. As a young lad about 9yrs old most of the details went over my head But looking back as an older youth the headlines were typical tabloid " spy ring, call girls, high society, government ministers " But do you know what stands out for me from this? The honour, loyalty, integrity and the strength of a couple who were a true love match.John Profumo and Valerie Hobson faced the flack together. He eventually reigned. Then both kept together, low key lifestyle whilst working with charities. Helping others, and serving the people. I'll say some more on this matter after the Keeler vlog Shar the reason your channel is climbing is your honesty with the stories you relate to us..Always with dignity, the facts as known never judging simply telling the story.
