Mark Normand is a podcaster, an actor and a comedian.
The mere discussion of some topics can cause huge controversy. Both sides of every issue are adamant that their opposition is fundamentally evil, malicious, bigoted or a secret race of lizard people. What is driving this huge demand for outrage? And can we do anything about it?
Expect to learn Mark’s takes on the Bud Light & Miller Lite controversies, why brands have completely lost their sense of humour, whether you have engaged in Digital Blackface and why it makes you racist, the ethical dilemma of incest, why AI girlfriends will destroy society, whether Tom Hanks is part of the Illuminati, if there’s a joke that is so offensive it should never be told and much more...

Was in church one Sunday a couple of years ago, large crowd maybe 2000 people. When the minister was going on about how great twitter is he asked for a show of hands who was on twitter - no one raised their hand. I didn't raise my hand either. I think this society treats twitter with way, way too much reverence.

1:15:50 This is pretty spot on. I think where the anger is coming from is this sense of changing the narrative of something that's already fine. This has happened to video games, comics, etc. The idea is, "What you like is bad because x, y, and z. This needs to change to be more inclusive", but people forget that by changing x, y, and z you have excluded your original target audience that liked the product to begin with. Most of the anger around these things stems from liking something, and not wanting it to change because it's fine as is. This also includes the whole girls in bikinis commercial. I like girls, I like girls in bikinis, I like beer. Therefor I like girls in bikinis advertising beer. When you make a commercial and tell me that I'm "bad shit" because I like girls in bikinis how do you expect your audience to react? I think the bottom line is, keep your politics out of your entertainment. This is a general rule. There are exceptions. There are good entertainment that is political or socio-political. That's fine. But when your audience wants to escape politics and enjoy your entertainment, and you push politics on it, they abandon your entertainment.
@anonony9081
@anonony9081 Жыл бұрын
There's also the general sentiment at this point that it's being forced and it's not organic at all. Race swapping one character is not a big deal but when you race/gender swap every single character you know it's coming from a disingenuous place. They didn't do it because it's interesting or because that actor happened to be the best for the role they are doing it to push their ideology
@BRLambert4
@BRLambert4 Жыл бұрын
@@anonony9081 I hear this argument made often that it's disingenuous and so it's pushing personal politics etc but can you explain exactly what you mean by that. What politician benefits when movie roles that were traditionally white characters are cast as non-white characters? And also what's a little frustrating is that the same energy can't be found in any other character choices. This is Hollywood that we're talking about, right? It's like every other facet of capitalism all about the bottom line. Studios cast the youngest, most attractive, most physically fit, diverse, actor or actress that will get people buying tickets. Hollywood casting will always be cynical and will always be disingenuous. And I guess instead of focusing on the person who sees a character portrayed by and actor or at actress of a different race and chooses not to see that movie, I think of How movies like the Black panther sincerely affected little boys who superhero who looks like there older brothers were dads or uncles for one of the first times ever. Obviously I know that you're discussing when roles are swapped out bye and actor of a different race and not necessarily a movie like Black panther where it was an integral part of the plot but the fact that representation truly changes lives is still true. Anyway I guess at the heart of the matter the industry that we're discussing is Hollywood and to only get angry at something that is genuinely harmless makes it appear that there's something rooted inside that person causing them to react the way they are reacting that they should probably work on.

Great point! Same thing applies to the 24/7 "news" channels. We are spending an incredible amount of time consuming "news" that essentially doesn't affect us, and then spending additional time being upset about or talking about those things. Add that time up, over a lifetime, and it's a lot. It's not inconceivable that a lot of folks will be on their deathbeds and come to the terrifying realization that they spent YEARS of their life consumed and upset by things that never really amounted to anything, and that's really sad. It's something each of us really should be aware of.

Anyone else like 🤔 impressed (is that the right word?) that Mark can play ball with this conversation and actually contribute and understand the subject matter so matter-of-factly? Dont get me wrong, Mark is a genuine, wholesome dude, his comedy is decent but versatile, but i guess he never seemed like this format would be his forte. That sounded condescending and i dont mean it to, cuz he is actually engaging to listen to in this podcast. He is subtly intellectual, and its a pleasant surprise.

Hilarious and amazing podcast! 💯 new subscriber for a couple months now and I love your podcast brotha. I’ve been trying to find the courage to start my own podcast and listening to yours definitely motivates me more and more. Especially remembering you saying Joe Rogan helped you start yours. It’s crazy I forget you are in Austin Tx, I live in San Antonio Tx so very close. Would like to meet you one day if that’s even possible maybe even one day have a podcast with you whether it’s on yours or eventually mine. Thank you for this beautiful gift of content.

I can’t imagine two more likeable fellas. Not sure how I ran into modern wisdom but Chris Is an absolute brilliant person and I could listen to him all day. And I am consistently impressed with how fucking quick mark normand is, I consider myself a pretty quick person, and I’m routinely jealous of how fast mark sees a joke or a punchline. Bravo.

Mark’s interviews are more entertaining than his standups and I mean that as a compliment. He’s one of those comedians that have a very interesting, peculiar perspective on life. I like to just hear him answering questions about life.
