I had a nose job in 2007, and my surgeon wanted my immediate family to show up the day before so he could look at their noses to get a better idea. He wanted me to still resemble my family. I loved that he did that because it showed he was looking for the most natural results. My nose did change me, but in a way that was very natural and still looked like my siblings. I was bullied for my nose, so I was worried that my bullies would notice that I had a nose job. To address this, my surgeon suggested a huge hair color change to distract people from my nose. That was the best idea ever because people really couldn’t pinpoint what was different. I told them it must be my hair. His idea really worked, and I’m forever grateful for him. Unfortunately, he passed away from COVID. I was devastated. He was one of the best cosmetic surgeons, always aiming for natural results. He took my concerns about my bullies to heart and looked for ways to help distract them from my nose. I thought that was amazing.

The beauty trend I want to die is warm-toned makeup as the default! I’m very fair and cool toned (blue-based) and I can’t do bronzer or any warmth at all. Yes, this!! I'm a fair cool with dark brown hair and eyes because of this. I feel that I look terrible in brown eyeshadow and definitely look horrible with bronzer. My go-to eyeshadow colors are cool tone pinks, purples, and mauves. I use a cool green or teal when I want something crazy because blue is normally to bold on my skin, and gray looks as awful as brown. Which is so weird because I can wear blue, gray, and brown clothes and look fine, but they can't be in my makeup pallet

The concept of a "plastic surgery trend" is very dystopian. Plastic surgery is a genuine medical practice and I'm not pretending it isn't, but making different plastic surgeries "trendy" is the end stage of unrealistic beauty standards. Especially with permanent procedures, as you mentioned, once that trend is over, the people who got the surgery WILL regret it. It is just another unending cycle that only exists to make us hate ourselves and our bodies.

The trend of young women getting filler, botox, and other tweakments, if you will, scare me tbh. The fact that filler doesn't really fully go away and it just migrates freaks me out. I do not know if having filler in you body over time can cause any serious health issues but I do feel like it's cause for concern when women are being told that their body metabolizes the filler after some months. I'm not saying that all filler or botox usage is awful but when young women are being encouraged to use it for cosmetic purposes it just doesnt seem like a great idea imo.

The other thing that bothers me about "pH adjusting" products is that there isn't that big of a range of pH in human skin! Nor should there be! If your skin is healthy the pH is going to be ~5. So it really can never look different for your "unique pH" because your pH isn't unique.

I put it in the back of my mind because I couldn’t afford it but I still had it in mind I would eventually get it when I could afford it. I was tired of looking so round and baby faced and I wanted to look like bella hadid. Now, at 26, I don’t need it!! I ended up having to lose all my natural teeth due to serious health problems. After a decade of slowly losing one after another and being in constant pain, things got worse. I broke three off at the gums in one weekend. Found a specialist dental team who removed what was left of my natural teeth. Through a two year process, we used implants inserted into my jawbone to replace them all. We used pictures of me as a child, then an adult and had long discussions about the final products. I have my little front space and a natural shape and color. And I can EAT WITHOUT PAIN! 🦷

Kait, doubt you’ll see this but I think your lips perfectly fit your face. The practice I’d like to see go away is the over emphasis of small “defects “ with a person’s skin or eyebrows or lip lines. As you mentioned, why are we striving for perfection as defined by some influencer? I have an autoimmune disease that has caused significant changes to my face and body. When I see someone fussing over a large pore or a tiny wrinkle it really turns me off.

The thing a lot of people don't realize about veneers is that they don't last forever! You get roughly ten years out of them before they need replacing, and you literally can't NOT replace them. So when you get veneers you are literally signing up to spend that same money over and over again every ten years or so until you die or get dentures. Hard pass for me. I also can't wait for excess filler, Botox, and airbrushing to die. I'm so over everyone looking like an over-inflated plastic doll. Like I'm not thrilled about getting wrinkles, but the sad fact is I'm getting old! Wrinkles come with the territory. And as far as airbrushing goes, there are some actors and actresses who have so much done to their faces in post that you literally can't even see their expressions anymore! Or they can't even make expressions anymore because half their face is full of silicone and the other half is literally paralyzed. But this stuff is at all levels, too, not just Hollywood. I wish more people could see the beauty in their own little physical idiosyncrasies.

OMG. I’m so with you on teeth. I feel like when teeth all look the same, it doesn’t look natural. Even ppl I’ve known with braces (who had pretty straight teeth to begin with) all mouths start looking the same. I feel like natural teeth give you character and make you unique. And lashes? I thought a coworker had caterpillars on their eyes. Like you said, if these make you feel beautiful, you do you. But I will stick with my natural teeth and lashes. Thanks Kait ❤️

Yes to all... except for skin tints, I agree that there are too many and we don't need more, but I have to admit that I love Danessa Myricks and Fenty's. For me the most concearning trends are the surgical ones, like veneers and buccal fat removal. I loved that you pointed out that there are cases that make sense / are well done, but it horrifies me that everyone is looking the same and there is no way back (veneers you can do them again, sure, but it's so expensive and teeth are hugely important to our overall health, messing with it freaks me out). I'm from Brazil, so our trends aren't always in tune, but I just came back from a trip to LA and was shocked with how many lash extensions / fake eyelashes I was seeing at places like Disneyland. I personally don't like it, but at least it isn't a forever kind of thing.

So many points you touched on Kait deserve much more attention. It's so sad to see everyone wanting to look the same (how boring and unimaginative). About 20 years ago I left corporate/big city life and made a drastic career change. At the same time I moved to a smallish mountain ski town and holy moly did that ever change my perspective. Everyone is just doing their thing and it's rare to see anyone sporting a full face of overly done makeup. Don't get me wrong, people make an effort, but living a healthy/outdoorsy life is top priority. Embrace who you are, what you're given and follow a trend if you truly like it. Find what makes you happy 💜

Thank you for talking about the impact on BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) the filter and modification "trends" have. It's not new, obviously, photo manipulation has been around since photography started BUT it's gotten so distorted and ubiquitous that people don't even realize how toxic it is. We shouldn't all have the same face shape, body shape, features, etc. And constantly using surgery to "correct" things that aren't flaws but have been turned into flaws because it makes people buy things is just bad for everyone. I worry a lot about younger women (I'm 45) because I know how that stuff has impacted me and all the work I've had to do in therapy to get to a place where I can accept and even celebrate the unique things about how I look. Things that, if I went by all of these trends, are hideous flaws I should be ashamed of (diastema, round face, aging etc). But they're just part of being a human being.

It hurts my head to look at people with these filters and non textured faces. I feel like a lot of artists like texture and naturalness. My dad even filed down his dentures to make them less uniform. There is a middle age popular lifestyle/makeup high end lady vlogger who tries new high end makeup, but you can never tell if it is good or not, because her skin is flawless, so it does not make any difference what she wears. But not long ago, she went to Italy and she was filming in the streets, and she showed her real face. Her skin is not bad at all, but what a difference with the at home filming! I don't want to see perfect people. I want to be able to see how good a foundation is on an ordinary person, so that I can decide if it is going to enhance my skin or not. I agree with you about most of the trends with the exception of skin tints. Trust me, as you get older, medium to full coverage foundation that use to be your go-to favourite will no longer be your friend. No matter what "new" foundations they release, most if not all will accentuate your lines, crinkles and wrinkles (*if you don't have any procedures, done which is another loaded issue for me*). It no longer looks the same no matter what you do or what formulations you try. Trust me, I've done the research with my hard earned beauty budget and am thankful I am friends with younger women who want what no longer works for me. As you said, it's all subjective and personal to each one of us. Tbh, I don't use foundation anymore, but I do use a tinted moisturiser from November to April and a light bronze self tanner May to October.

I’m really glad you said veneers because besides a lot of people don’t consider the financial setbacks and health risks of getting them for cosmetic purposes. A lot of people also get the wrong procedure done and end up with a full set of crowns, which is even worse. These people getting crowns are most likely gonna have to get a dentures or implants at 40 and multiple root canals since all of the enamel gets shaved down to tiny little pegs. I had to get a crown when I was a child to preserve a baby tooth until the adult one grew in and it was terrible! Getting it done was painful and it later had to get removed since my adult molar started to grow in which caused more unbearable pain and discomfort. Great video as always!

@@lizzy8243elder gen Z here, I was born in 98 and had my teenage years in the 2010’s. For about 8 years of my life skinny jeans were the norm. My theory is that myself and a lot of people whose childhood or adolescent formative years were during this era have a negative association with them. Could be due to body issues at the time or bad memories that are associated with them. I remember being a teenage girl on tumblr reblogging b&w photos of girls in skinny jeans and leggings and high waisted shorts and my parents laughing at me for calling it fashion when it’s what they used to wear as teenagers. The thing that I am the most sick of isn't really a trend probably, but it's just that every brand feels like they need a full range of every single product, makeup and skincare. I wish there were more niche brands that specialised in specific things. Like brow products or lipstick or something. When every single brand HAS to have every single product, obviously not all of their products will be amazing, so it's just such a waste.

About the fact that people get rid of their unique features.. when you’re growing up, that is almost always a negative thing. They get bullied or singled out and made to feel singled out from the mass, which can be very damaging. This teaches the person to hate their special features, which stays with them throughout life because it’s associated with bad experiences. It’s so so sad. BUT I’m convinced that the tables will turn, and uniqueness will become desirable and rare. Lets hope! Many people do not get the opportunity to get old, and ageing, with all the bodily changes it brings should be celebrated. First I want to say that not only did I watch this but I had my teenagers watch it (including my son, not just my daughters). We then had a long conversation about it. Social media does affect all ages. As a maturing woman it’s hard enough to go through the changes without seeing “perfection” thrown in my face all the time, even when I logically know these people have had things done to their face or are using filters etc. I don’t even have a problem with people using filler or getting plastic surgery, yet at times it can be difficult to separate that from my own self esteem. I actually did get rid of social media for 2 years because it was having a negative effect on me and it was the best thing I could have done at the time. It proved to me that in fact social media was adding negativity to my life. Now I have Instagram and TikTok, but I have very strategically cultivated it to creators like yourself that are real and genuine. I don’t use TikTok for beauty at all and I use instagram for more makeup news and only creators that I know and trust. I bypass a lot of the crap while still getting joy and fulfillment with my love of makeup. While I know my kids aren’t involved in social media as much as some, I still wanted them to watch this so they could see someone other than mom talk about the beauty of being unique and that everything you see on social media is not reality especially amongst the masses. I agree with so many of the things you said here today. Great video!

@@StateofKait Your video really resonated with me. I felt it addressed some of the topics that I wanted my kids to hear, not from me, but from an “influencer”. I am very forthcoming with my teens, they know I gave up social media for a while and why I did it. You speak very well and you are one of those people I find uniquely beautiful.

Cannot agree more about the buccal fat removal!!! as a 44-year-old who is now losing volume in her face-- I am so so so so glad I never did that procedure!!! Same with pH adjusting products! I spent so much for that Youthforia blush just for it to sit on my counter 😂😂 I thought it would give me my very own "custom" color but nope! Right on the mark with all these❤❤❤

My default thought on seeing anyone in photos, social media, film i.e. not actually seeing them in person, is that they don't really look like that.

I'll add clown eyebrows although most people have realized that was a bad trend but how did they not see it at the time? The big drawn in block and some people still do it.

When I was a teenager I had acne. I had them during my adulthood too. I had boys liking me all the time. One even said: Yes you have acne but they look good on you. 😃 I am 60 now and have been married for 40 years. We still love each other and have happy marriage. I wasn't pretty but I didn't care. And neither did anyone else.

I’m with you on all of these, but especially on lip plumping products. I have allergic contact dermatitis around my vermilion border. I can’t use products with fragrance, flavors, plant extracts, most plant oils, and some very common preservatives. Ingredients used to intentionally irritate the skin are obvious a huge NO for me. But they are so common! It’s hard enough to find products that are free of fragrance and flavors. Why do we need so many products that go beyond that with intentionally irritating ingredients? Another trend that I’d like to see die is the use of plant extracts/botanical ingredients, especially in makeup. Even when companies are not pushing a “clean beauty” approach, new products almost always have some kind of plant extract in them these days. They’re marketed as skincare ingredients within makeup, but they’re often ingredients that have no research behind them whatsoever, like some random flower extract. Is the lily extract in this new foundation really helping my skin? Really?? No. It is not. But consumers seem to really want to see ingredients they can identify, rather than ingredients developed in a lab with chemical names. But this makes it very difficult for us allergy prone folx. I want my products to be developed in a lab under controlled conditions, with only those ingredients that are going to get the job done, in a cosmetically elegant formula. I’m genuinely concerned that the products I’ve found that I’m not allergic to will be reformulated simply because why not put centella in e v e r y t h i n g.

This is some spot-on commentary! I pretty much agreed with all your takes here haha. Glad I’m not alone re: not being a fan of fake lashes, everyone having the same veneers, buccal fat removal, lip plumpers etc. A few thoughts: -Fake lashes when overdone can really weigh down the eyelids and make people look tired. -If I ever were to consider veneers in the future (like if my teeth got damaged or really worn down over the decades), I would genuinely want them to model them after my original teeth, not the standard Hollywood smile. I notice the generic style veneers tend to be really big/long and uniform in length. Personally I like that my canine teeth are a bit longer than the others and would want to retain that feature! -Regarding buccal fat removal, I remember when I was younger I didn’t really love that I had a full, almost chubby looking face. I wanted a sculpted look. But as I get older, I find my baseline full face has kept me looking younger than some of my more sculpted peers. I suppose we all got our day in the sun at different times. I would never consider buccal fat removal. -Lip plumpers: exactly what you said. They’re so irritating and drying! My lips just look worse later. No thanks. I’ll add one more: -Bronzing drops: I don’t really get it. My skin is the color it is and I’m not trying to fight it. I just think it can look kind of muddy or unnatural to bronze all over the face rather than in targeted areas with a typical bronzer. Self tan in general just seems like a hassle where you’re always trying to manage matching your face and body and then it looks at odds when you wash off your makeup. Love these videos 💜 you really hit it home with the key point that we don’t all need to look the same! Love to see everyone looking like their best self, not an approximation of someone else.

Agree so much w everything, you said, Kait ❤🤯 I esp. hate unachievable beauty standars, which social media urges, and makes people hate themselves. And gigantic falsh lashes. It looks so stupid, and really overpowers person’s own unik beauty. Particularly, when many influencers use bigger size falsies, than their own eyes are…

I fully agree 👍 And some of these trends are dangerous, especially when they involve plastic surgery. I would add the sun tan "forever trend", because it can be unhealthy as well and I don't like it on myself, I'm literally a ghost 👻😅 I love the videos about crazy trends ❤

As a MUA, I couldn’t agree more with the falsies! Please can they GO! For the ladies/gents with sparse, to no lashes, for sure I love to add very light whispy lashes. A lash lift can make such a difference to straight, downturned lashes. But PLEASE! Can those heavy duty lashes kindly leave the building!
