If the beaver dam started to flood the “leave the damn alone” peoples yard of basements, they would be the first ones out there. Great vid as usual and be safe.

A healthy forest is good for our oxygen supply tree roots covered in water will die James is right they need to breathe ,breaking these dams is keeping the fields drained and the forest healthy, What Mantas is very important for the environment

I watch a gentleman from Russia, he goes into the forest to remove dams, and they are huge. He explains that there are huge area of trees that are damaged because of the flooding, and they also push other animals out because their natural feeding areas are destroyed. He does not trap them, but he spend at times days removing a single huge dam.

Beaver are good in some areas, a big problem in others. When they start flooding and killing off forests they are a problem. By Mantas taking out a dam or two he's helping the tree roots to breath like they were designed to do. Keep up the good work Mantas.

The trees beavers kill allow forest meadows to be created and provide habitat for other animals, also in the areas of Yellowstone national park in the USA, during the last forest fire, the areas where the beavers had ponds and had killed off the trees, was a natural fire break that protected pockets of very old growth forest. Without the Beavers in those areas, the old growth forest would have been lost. Beavers existed long before man in the environment, and beavers are a key component of a health forest ecology.

I responded to someone advocating that you should not be removing beaver dams. To put it bluntly they had been comparing apples to oranges. They did not understand that the ditches were part of a land drainage network, like the dykes and windmills in the Netherlands. Mantas, you have pointed out many times how the high water levels were flooding adjacent fields. I don't always approve of how you open the dams but admire your willingness to do so. A number of You Tubers remove beaver dams, most of them doing so prevent damage to infrastructure and flooding that destroys properties, agricultural land and kills forests. Did you set up a trail camera to catch the fox on video? Setting up a trail camera to monitor where a dam was opened will give a very good idea as to the number of beaver in the area. Appreciate seeing the drone shots really gives a great picture of the size of the area that was flooded. Wish I was young enough to visit you and help opening dams.

The ditches man have made was to drain marshlands and swamps the beavers inhabited before man altered the ecology of the area. As for beavers harming forest, they play a vital role in the health of the forest, by thinking out trees,m creating meadows, and water retention during dry periods. Also beavers also create natural firebreaks in the forest with their pond and marshes they create. During the last big Yellowstone fire that burnt vast tracks of trees, the beaver ponds and the meadows they they created protected pockets of old growth trees. If you study the history of the last pagans in Europe, which was the Baltic states, in the writings he talks about the vast swamps and marshlands the Estonians, Latvia, and Lithuanian tribes lived in, it was the Soviets who drained these wetlands migratory water foul depended on, to convert the area to agriculture, in a large scale. At one time the European beaver was almost hunted to extinction because of the fashion trade of the beaver felt hats. In many parts of the world in the Americas and Europe wetland restoration is being carried out to undo the damage of man did in draining swamps and wetlands that are essential for charging the aquifers. Beavers play the role God gave them in the environment.

There are times when beaver dams are good: running water keeps going; water sitting behind a beaver dam sinks into and replenishes the aquifers. There are places in the USA where artificial beaver dams are being built to renew aquifers and green the land. When they are destroying farms and forests, they are not good.

I work in conservation in the UK and here we are re-introducing European Beavers. It's true that they can cause problems like you have with the water table being made higher than farmers would like. In such a modified man-made environment they do have to be controlled. Where they can be left they do good things. People have to manage water-side trees to stop falling trees from causing the collapse of river banks. Beavers do that for us. They also contain flood waters better that man-made solutions to man-made problems. They slow the water down and can prevent your house from flooding or reduce the effect. I live at the edge of a wide valley which was created by Beavers when they lived here in the past. People have had to put in retention ponds and other mechanisms because the Beavers are no longer there. There will come a time were we have to carefully cull Beavers where our and their interest diverge. However they are not North American Beavers. Even there in Yellow Stone park they had to reintroduce them along with the wolves. The grazing animals were taking over. After the re-introductions the grazing populations went down, trees returned and the Beavers restored tree and wetland management that would not be plausible for people to do. People in towns and cities are far removed from the balance that is struck in the countryside and though the balance has far too long been in favour of Man that trend has started to be reversed. Nothing like the slow death of pollution and climate change to alter the focus from the mortgage and pay. We all win. Happy environment - happy people.

As you say it's the people in the cities, who say wouldn't it be nice to have beavers, as they have here in the UK ! So we have them now, and in a few years we will have the flooded fields and denuded woods, and a lot of beavers !! I think they have also released boars, which will enjoy digging the farmers fields for them ! Chaos ! Those people don't realize that the Soviet creation of the drainage canals to reclaim land in swampy areas of coastal Lithuania has provided increased arable farmland, making the country more agriculturely self sufficient. The fields next to the canals also would not exist or be as farmable without the underlying drainage system and canals. The beavers were reintroduced into Lithuania and the other Baltic States in the 1960s. They had been extinct in these areas. The beaver populations are now above levels considered desirable and are reaching overpopulation numbers. They dam rivers, canals, and streams migrating fish such as salmon use to breed. They cause harm to forests, farms, housing, roads, and other infrastructure through flooding. Since natural predators for the beavers have been reduced or eliminated, their population will continue to expand unless controlled hunting is utilized. Good video but it looked like the tractor got the best part first.

'saving the forest' is another urban myth (like the animals) - trees grow like weeds (fast). Perhaps let the beavers mine the forests, and then once the forest is gone - they'll move on to the next one (or experience a societal collapse which depopulates) - I expect it balances out in the end (so only remove dams that are flooding farm fields). I assume we have no idea of the level of complexity we are living in. What's your take on those ideas?

The areas you work in have few natural predators for beavers. The beavers can grow in numbers beyond what they would have done in a natural environment. The beavers have a bad impact on farming and small wooded areas. If you were in the vast forests of Canada or the US, then I would say to leave the beavers alone. They are part of the natural balance. Their dams and artificial lakes introduce an important dynamic into the ecosystem. There are wolves and other predators that keep their populations balanced with the environment. The area you are in is different than the massive forests of the US. The beaver populations and the damage the dams cause must be controlled.
@raymondheckard234

According to ecologist beavers are good for the environment, because the create wet lands, and their ponds create meadows in for the forest when the beavers abandon the area after their primary food source is gone, and the dams deteriorate. Beavers also help with water retention during the dry periods, providing fish habitat, water source for wildlife, and the create marsh lands for migrating waterfowl, also beavers help to prevent erosion and flash floods during heavy rain. The environmentalist will tell you Beavers are essential for the health of a forest, and the waterways, that they are a key part of the environment. In some areas it is a crime to harass beavers , and to remove their dams requires a permit.

Man has altered the balance of the ecology of the forest by eliminating predators and have driven many species to extinction . Every species has it niche in the environment of the forest. There is a tree tree relied on a certain bird to crack the shell on its fruit, to release its seed so it could sprout, and when Man eliminated the Dodo bird, the Macadamia tree no longer can grow in the wild with out man’s intervention, to crack the shell, the dodo bird cracked the shell so it could sprout. Man killed off the dodo bird, and almost killed off the Macadamia tree.
