The explanation of Bebop is truly expressed in this composition , "Conception". The fast moving turnarounds and descending basslines moving into modulations while creating a melody line that seems so singable is pure genius. Thanks Kent for all you do here. 😎👍🏽🎶🔥♥️🔥🎶

Great tutorial! In the B part 2-5-1 key of E (F#m - B7 - E..) the rh is doing a G bebop dominant scale on the B7 chord, which is a minor 3rd from the key of E. The same sound can be achieved by doing a minor 3rd interval on any key then playing notes in the bebop dominant scale. For example in the key of C (on the 5 (G) you can play Eb bebop dominant). Haven't realized this before. Fantastic work, thanks!

I love that sequence of chromatically descending II-V s, and the melody with them...it's so different from the rest of the song but a perfect compliment. You just gave me an idea for a drill. Thanks!

Good lesson! You explained how the song is structured and what its concept is. This makes it much easier to play. What I also liked a lot is that you did not explain things that people who watch this, should have known already, like tritone substitute. It is aggravating and idiotic when a teacher mixes up levels of knowledge and competence. This lesson of yours, about Conception, is exactly right in length, content, tone, and execution. And therefore a little jewel of a lesson. Thank you very much.

KH's fast version at end is so CRISP ! And it sounds so good at both tempos- when voiced like recommended here, and played "crisply." It's interesting to hear analysis of WHY this is a classic.

Thanks so much for the comment. It's perhaps one of the best bebop compositions ever written but much under-appreciated as compared to the Parker, Powell, and Gillespie classics. But then I think that Shearing is under- appreciated...even though I put him in my top 5 greatest jazz pianists of all time.

Kent thanks for your in depth and inspiring breakdown of this wonderfully swinging tune by George Shearing. It’s really quite a bebop masterpiece, with its interesting turns and twists rhythmically, melodically, and harmonically. I like the tasty little drop 2 figure you added. Just enough. Swings loose!

Thanks, James...yes, I see you are a musician and get it totally. It is a bebop masterpiece and Shearing should have more accolades... esp. from Downbeat.

Kent thanks so much for your response, and spot on comments about Shearing’s mastery. Your breakdown of the piece has the tritone substitution elements and chromaticism that Shearing used along with the melody lines that are so catchy and interesting as you point out. Jarrett’s version is quite different both in terms of the changes and the melody line of the head. Fewer chords, perhaps for economy (at that tempo) and without the exciting yet quirky twists of the melody. I somehow was reminded of Evans in hearing Shearing’s melody. Sure enough, there it was on none other than the Bill Evans reissue twofer Conception. A real tour de force!

Yes, Joy Spring is another great bebop tune (written by Clifford Brown). It's played by more musicians than this one, but in many ways equally challenging. Sometimes tunes written by horn players are more difficult to execute for pianists because of the fingering. Thanks for the comment!

Note that a particular Bud Powell “live” recording (from the late 40s) is simply magnificent. Blistering tempo which is typical of Bud. His solo alone makes it worth listening to - over and over. A masterclass within a tune.

It was actually the April 1955 “Piano Interpretations” recording produced by Norman Granz, released in 1956 on his Norgan label that I referred to. A CD was reissued by Verve (Japan) in 2006. Art Taylor on drums. Just a beautiful session with Bud’s bebop masterclass in full flight on his solo of George Sharing’s tune Conception.

Good evening Kent, yes, I like Herbie Hancocks music, especially the early 70th records (I always have been a synthesizer nerd myself) and some Blue Note records. The Head Hunter album will always have a place in my heart. Thank you Kent for your kind and encouraging words. I am practicing nearly 2 years now on the piano nearly every day and since 2 month now I visit a classical teacher once a week. He is also a conductor. Of course I practice still jazz harmonic theory and chords. I find the combination of classical education and jazz very good and I am happy to progress a little from time to time :) Best wishes.

It's still in rough note form and incomplete unfortunately, enough that I can slow down the recording and learn to play along with it and be guided by ear which I'm still working on! The intro chords are along the lines of A major 7, F# 9 + 5 + 11, F7 + 5, B flat major 7, E7 + 5 + 9, E flat 9 + 11, D minor 9/13/11, C major 7, B flat major 13/9, and +11, E7 + 5 + 9, back to A major 7.

tnx Kent great lesson, I checked a performace by George Shearing and I understand your points about speed, trade offs between the left and right hand kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrGBdtd2l9qVm4E.html. Apart from the piano, the vibraphone player is great. The few times I ever had access to noodle around with such an instrument, totally enjoyed it Such a song is beyond me right now, but notice in the video how George makes use of the piano sustain pedal, left foot for tapping out temp, along with the right foot, gingerly messing with the sustain Django Reinhardt has a similar thing going on with the tempo, maybe not as nuanced but its there. As you say, if you can get that far with the right hand, or like Django with what few fingers he had , thats going some distance
