There's something perfect about how you frame the shot, the sound of the piano, and how you play. It's a rare treat to see talent up front, and I'm still learning plenty too. If you ever play the UK I'm there. Stay cool Kent.

Dan, Thanks! That's a great compliment...particularly because I'm low-tech and I only use a Canon Powershot S-95 for sound and video and a free Windows editor. Most people doing this are using complex hi tech equipment. Some of my relatives are from UK. Swing loose!

Love these two new videos which I discovered while trying to find where I left off in the beginning jazz series. I fell off the "piano practice wagon" for a little while due to home restoration issues, but I'm back now. I'm really excited to continue and even bought your book this morning. Can't wait to dig in and apply the material. I'm sure it will help me work through your many wonderful free videos. Can't thank you enough for your unwavering dedication to jazz education. It must give you tremendous satisfaction to know you are helping so many people improve their skill at this mind bending genre. You are a treasure!

when you put the syncopation in it.. it brought it alive.. Basically I learned it from humming and singing.. the metronome won't do that..I didn't realize what syncopation was until years into music.. had a vague idea but always learning.. btw I'm getting the herbie Hancock riff down in all the keys.. i have the g minor one down almost perfect. I just kept at it. Another thing that has helped me and I'll pass this on. The brain will work things out.. I've gone to sleep and woke up and played guitar solos and likewise piano pieces. A simple coffee break., lunch, a phone call,etc. There is something about these interruptions that does a. rain reset. Also after practicing physically demanding piano parts,,got body will also sync in with brain. and it does eventually. become natural.

Very good exercise. Also, very stressful...but worthwhile. I've been doing this lesson (at the highest step #8) for the past several weeks and it has done wonders for my confidence. It shook my confidence in the beginning but over time, it has built it back up. Also, I've been using various randomly selected syncopations (I write it down), which adds to my stress level but it sounds great. Sometimes, the beat is 1, 2&, 4, and other times, it's 1&, 2, 3&, 4&. I use dice and a reference chart to get my randomized beats.

This video is great because you could use this for laid back and fast jazz too. Core concepts explained through a simple exercise. Also you focus on everything other pianists don’t. It’s definitely a first step to jazz that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I know it’s good to understand different modes, chord progressions, modulations, and how to input them properly, but you need to understand the flow and all the fundamentals before tackling advanced stuff. Great tutorial for people beginning jazz improvisation!

I loved Scale Cosmic Symmetry, but for example, in other videos other subjects are covered and I do not know if it can be embedded in II V I and things like that. For now I have not found a clear order to continue learning, but I'm just starting out. I saw that there are several videos on the channel. I'll explore more I have heard more and more jazz and perceived the power of this music. I'm from Brazil, so I'm sorry for some English error. I appreciate the attention. I'll keep trying, XO

Hey Kent, Huge fan! Is there any chance you could make a video on solo piano technique?
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark and thanks!, I thought that's what I was doing. Have you checked out more of my videos? Re-phrase your question more specifically and maybe I can help.

Kent Hewitt I meant "solo piano technique" as in playing without anyone else comping or playing time. Ive recently been playing a lot of solo cocktail gigs and i realized how used to a rythm section i have gotten. If you could maybe take a tune like "never never land" or "pure imagination" and discuss how you would go about playing it by yourself I would really apreciate it!! Thanks so much for all the help and all the great music!!

Hey Kent, thanks for the lesson. Really helpful. I was wondering, when you get into the syncopation steps, are you hitting that target tones on the ands of the beat? Or are the ands for the approach tones
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 3 жыл бұрын
Without looking at the video again, I would say that it's both. The target tones will fall often on the off beats (or an's) that makes jazz syncopation really swing, but also they will fall on the down beats. Good question. Check out bebop notation...that should help you to understand it, if you analyze it.

Hi Kent, I have been practising 7th.chords in progressions with inversions and trying to impro with right hand. Should I switch to 2 note voicing ( which I am not used to but would do if you think I should) Fantastic lessons

2 notes in left hand and 2 in right hand can be a good sound...very sparse with essential harmonies. It's good to be versatile and know many ways of voicing chords... and mix it up. If you watch more of my videos you'll see that I do that.

Thanks ,Kent, Definitely its what I need to do as block chords wont do the job I want which is to also play piano sheet music. As an older learner ,i am teaching myself using ABRSM GRADES. In chords I used your ii, v, i as a base for key c 1M7- 2m7- 5dom 7(2nd inversion) -1M7-- 1DOM7--4M7--3m7--2m7 -- 1M7 -- 1 dim7--2m7--5dom7--1M7. Now learning in other keys ( bit tougher) Honestly, if it was not for discovering your site, I would have given up ages ago. ps. presently working on your first book "JAZZ PIANO"

How do you separate your foot from your hands? I, for the life of me, can't consciously tap my foot while playing "out of rhythm" in the right hand. Do you have any tips? As an aside, totally love your videos. As someone who was only classically trained for 9 months, this really opens up Jazz Piano for me, so thank you. Keep on bein groovy Kent.

Thanks for the question. It's a good one, and perhaps would make for a useful video. There's a step- by- step process that will help you, involving playing quarter notes connecting with the foot beats, then 8th notes, then emphasizing the 2nd, 4th, etc, 8th notes (off beats: those not on the beat), eventually leading to playing syncopation in hands while keeping steady quarter note beat with foot. Using a metronome will help.
