@windyhawthorn73875 жыл бұрын
@K Weaver Nope a lot of folks weren't on the internet . You first had to own a computer then a phone line and then have a internet provider. Or visit the library a lot. Where I live you still can't get high speed internet easily the prices are throw the roof and there's no fiber optics. You have to get dial up, wireless or satellite. There is literally only 3 choices. And cellphone service is limited to only at&t if you want to reliably make and receive calls. Today there are more people on due to it being a lot easier. You just need to have a smartphone and a service plan. That truly has reached more people then a computer hooked up with internet. But still I know a lot of people who would rather read a book then use the internet its cheaper for one.

@@crystalmethany3245 (I asked online for you and someone gave this reply, I think it may help) If she likes girls too, just go for it. Tell her you like her and see where it goes :) I thought I was straight my entire life until I was 16, then I realized I was in love with a girl, my best friend. Im bi. I didn't know what to do, I almost lost my chance to tell her, but then I watched Dan's (Dan Howell) coming out video and realized something; I don't owe anybody my personal life info, other than myself who I date, they don't need to know. Parents don't have to know! That realization changed everything for me, I didn't have to wait until I lived on my own before telling her how crazy I'd fallen for her, I could tell her now and it be our secret. So I told her, she was extremely shocked and didn't see it coming at all and didn't know what to say. I told her she didn't need to say anything and to take as much time as she needed to answer, a couple days later she said she liked me. Your family doesn't need to know until you move out :) just keep being "best friends"

I was pretty young when Ellen came out of the closet but I was like "...and...?" I hadn't realized it was a secret.
@jamera82235 жыл бұрын
it wasn't. Everyone knew but back then it was not socially acceptable to talk about it in a forum that might include children. The place society had carved for gays was in the closet- my uncle's "roomate," your auntie's "friend', the life long "bachelors" and bachlorette's" like Luther Vandross, George Michael. Adults all knew but kids generally didn't. I do remember feeling the whole thing was pretty ridiculous and over blown by adults on both sides. But that is because I was a stupid teenager. Looking back now after all this life experience Ellen HAD to verbally say "I am gay" just to make it socially ok. And as a grown ass woman I feel like- how the hell you gonna live walking around pretending that the love of your life, the most important other person in your life, doesn't exist (if and when you have one)? I know people did it but it couldn't have been me and my big mouth/heart!

@achanwahn6 жыл бұрын
marie R I was young during this, so I never watched the show, but I remember how big a deal this was. No one had been a major lead and been open about their homosexual preference on a family sitcom. Most people condemned that, saying homosexuals were basically not normal, disgusting or degenerates. Nowadays, only certain groups of people are biased and major television networks cater to the demographics in a more diverse way. Ellen was a huge milestone in breaking that taboo and showing that people are just people. This show was one of the most profound impacts on society at the time.
@meganangell76706 жыл бұрын

@EdwinMaarleveld6 жыл бұрын
I wonder about it as well. Knowing and insinuating was not the same thing as saying it out loud apparently. The words themselves being offensive as well maybe.
@andorthethis6 жыл бұрын
It was very different to joke and poke fun at rumors than to openly own your sexuality and be proud of it. Sure gay people could exist and yea it could be funny but god forbid we really talk about it let alone celebrate it and have a tv show star an openly gay woman. That’s the difference. It was a very different time.
@storageheater6 жыл бұрын
You could air this now and people would assume she just needed a husband and family to fix her. What gets me is she put so much work into humanising the situation (it's actually a little heartbreaking seeing it split away from the sitcom like this) and yet once the bomb dropped, she was gone. But it's lovely to see the impact was lasting and positive. I'd just like to add a UK story from only a few years earlier, Sandi Toksvig, a much loved presenter and author with years of work behind her, was fired from her role as ambassador for Save the Children when they learned she was a lesbian in 1994. “They told me not to tell anybody, they told me to keep it a secret. I don’t know what [they thought] … Save the Children, apart from the gay ones!”

She's the pioneer, the one who changed the tv shows to what they are nowadays. I love that not only she talked about who she was, she also brought up fear, feeling, relationship, and other issues into her sitcom. Thanks +Rebecca Burns for putting all these up together! These are all historic breakthrough moments. This Ellen, she can be brave and serious if she needs to. That's why she's the most special LGBT stars out there in my book.

BSVEVO1 obvious to us; not necessarily to people back then. We have 20/20 vision. For them this was what was happening then, at the moment. Oh I'm sure some guessed, but for casual watchers? No, they wouldn't have cared enough to know or figure it out
@4dultw1thj0b6 жыл бұрын
Oh, you underestimate how oblivious straight people can be.
@freddouglas69356 жыл бұрын
AlwaysGonnaSing you don't get the point. I don't care who's straight or gay and watching the show. I'm saying that we look at these now and it is obvious to us because we know she's gay. It's like solving a math problem. If you know the answer, it is easier to get the work correct. Your mind is wired that way. I don't care who's gay or not. It's a human fucking trait. We are made to see patterns and fill in the blanks.
@4dultw1thj0b6 жыл бұрын
Alright, you can get to say gay or straight doesn't matter to you because it doesn't directly impact your life, but it is a significant factor for us. I don't think you really get how scary it can be to come out, even now. You can lose important relationships, your job, your livelihood. And even when it isn't that dire, there is often still a feeling of estrangement from the people around you, like you're an alien being who doesn't belong with anyone. That's why they kept it down to innuendos and little winks for so long. Audiences were fine with the implication as long as it was just a joke that they didn't have to reflect on. But once she removed all deniability, suddenly people got uncomfortable and wanted her to stop talking about being a lesbian. But hey, good for you, you're enlightened.
@freddouglas69356 жыл бұрын
AlwaysGonnaSing ...and again you missed the entire point and made an entire new discussion. Look, I sypmathize with people's struggles. If you feel like coming out of the metaphorical closet is hard or damaging, I get it. Don't think I haven't faced my own...difficulties. but that isn't what this conversation is originally about. Not even close. It's about the clues she left, not the impact it had on her life. Positive or not is a discussion for a different day and video. I'm simply addressing the issue of human fallability with clues and the overall answer to a question. Any idiot can look back on the past and judge was was; and what is. But that has no relevance to people THEN. And please, dont give me a story that is like that, in the hopes that it changes my opinion. I sypmathize fully, but what I went through is much much worse. I could have lost someone close to me, and not in a relationship sense. They could have died. Even if your life is arguably worse than it was, you are alive. I was lucky. But that doesn't mean that having your life isn't the worst thing in the world. You still have hope and a chance but well...hope is useless when that person is dead. And I want to be clear: I mean this in no derogatory way. I am not trying to belittle you or others, but far worse realites exist beyond your coming out as gay/lesbian and it being detrimental to your life.

1. These are clips from her sitcom 'Ellen' from the 90s, please no need to tell me that I'm 'too late' or 'she's married to a woman'. 2. I have used the word 'gay' because in an interview Ellen said she preferred referring to herself as gay rather then lesbian, so I used it. 3. I know some of these “clues” may be stereotypical or old fashion or you don't agree with them (I also find some quite ‘cringe’) but Ellen mentioned she added these throughout the season to build it up, and it's just silly, not meant to be taken too seriously. 4. This video is not to be offensive, I'm a huge fan of Ellen and the sitcom.

+Rebecca Burns It is sad that you had to explain all that to these people. I am with you. I found this video to be a tribute to her. Well done!
@BeckyBurning8 жыл бұрын
Thankyou for enjoying the video :D I believe I first heard Ellen say it in an interview with Diane Sawer (I think) in 1997, but it was also printed in Time magazine: content.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1704183_1704257_1704513,00.html But I don't think she would feel the same now because in that interview (with Diane) Ellen said she gets more accepting of the word as she gets older so most likely she would be fine with it now :)
