Listening to this again a few years later. Beck has *extensive* musical knowledge - traditional Western orchestral instruments, Alpine horns, a yodeler (!), Chinese instruments, a gospel choir... you don't just say "hey, let's do something different", you have to THINK about this. Aside from the fact it's an amazing cover, it showcases his deep knowledge and his respect for music.

This is what Beck said to Rolling Stone about that cover: "I covered "Sound and Vision" a couple years ago with almost 200 other musicians. It was surreal and insane trying to get that many people to play together at the same time. I never heard anything from him about it, but I hope that it didnt make him cringe or anything. I know he was particular, and its always strange to hear one of your songs covered. It can be a great thing or it could be a terrible thing." I'm sure he loved it. I mean, how couldn't you? You can almost breathe the love in that room through your screen.

+Sean McGerry I agree, this could have been a great tribute, respectful and creative... Bowie deserved better than what I've seen so far. The performance at the Brit's awards was ok because it was his real band, and they worked with him, but Lorde was a bit dry for me, sorry.

+arfer After Bowie's death, Beck told Rolling Stone magazine he'd never heard back from Bowie about this performance, but that before it came out Bowie had tweeted to his fans that it was forthcoming, I think because Beck asked his permission to use the song. Bowie has said he wished he'd asked Curt Cobain why he was inspired to record The Man Who Sold the World. So maybe Bowie just didn't go out of his way to comment to other artists about their covers of his songs. I want to believe he heard and loved it.

Oh my God, the love I have for both David Bowie and Beck... it compounds the magic ten fold ... !!!!!! When they slow it down in the middle, it reminds me of the feel of Morning Phase ❣️❣️❣️Beck is one of the very best live performers I have ever seen , and I've seen him several times. 1st was at jabberjaw with That Dog in the 90s!!!!! 😄🤘😜

Listening to Beck & co. recreating the masterpiece by the late great David Bowie, I am reminded as to why we as a human species are put on earth and why we come in all shape and sizes. Every musicians that is in this recording bring in their own small piece of sound to the overall composition. Every sound is different & unique, yet when played together, they create a harmonic soundscape that is by far greater than the sum of its parts. An analogous as to why it is important to respect one another, regardless of race, religion, political stance, background, social status and the likes. Only by working together and respecting one another can these individual noises can come together and create music. #sayingnotoracism

This is my go to for so many things....how often do you see so much joy in the musicians and singers? Every, single, one....is full of joy and making something so beautiful. I cannot keep my eyes dry whenever I listen to this. Thank you David Bowie for the song. Thank you Beck for the interpretation and arrangement. Thank you to the hundreds of people making this incredible sound.

This is easily one of the most moving musical performances I have seen. And I have seen some S**T! We are lucky to be alive at the same time as Beck. He truly is one of the great musical talents; not ahead of his time, but perfect right in it. I take him for granted sometimes, I plan on remedying that tomorrow.

@andreapinkpawsx . . . Just wanted to tell you that your comment here is my favorite of the bunch. There is so much love behind it. Beck is known for being a huge Bowie fan himself, and this "reimagining" is clearly a labor of love and admiration. The world has lost so many treasured musicians this year, but I can't think of any as intensely mourned as David Bowie.

That last minute always gives me crazy goosebumps. This is what a sincere tribute looks like (I know this is a couple years old, but still) and not that stuff that Gaga did. Beck should've performed this at the Grammys, especially because Bowie loved that performance, and not Gaga.

I can certainly appreciate the time and energy put into all this from the musicians, singers, as well as all the "eccentric" instuments (I mean, "singing saw", y'all! Come ON!!! I kind of hope there is a jug and washboard in there somewhere, LOL, as a hillbilly myself I could get with that)… But I love that Beck has always done his own creative things much like Bowie did, and that his voice isn't the typical "pop" voice just as Bowie's never was either. So this is … Perfect. I think David would have loved this.
