The 50 is a great one to have in anyone’s camera bag! I’ve shot a ton with it, and then got my hands on an 85mm 1.8. By far my favorite lens for portraits and cars! The compression is just too good!! 🔥💯❤️ But, with all that said, the 50 1.8 is definitely my favorite lens for indoor portraiture.

It's fun to see what people prefer as their primary lens. I prefer to use my precious 85mm lens (with my CANON! 😙) as the obvious primary fixed lens for portrait photography and it's probably mainly because I have been using it for so many years that it's become an extension of how I view and photograph the world.

50 is a lot of fun to work with. I think you can challenge yourself with it as well. It’s always my go-to “start” lens for a photos session (depending on what I’m shooting.) I was always able to shoot a lot of a wedding day with it, and I love it for portraits and details, like you said, as well as for shooting candids during events. This is the first video I’ve seen from this series, so I’m going to go back and watch the rest now! And the Facebook group is awesome! Thanks Becki!

Thanks, I love this series. Just got my first real camera, a Fuji XS-10 with the 15-45mm (FF equivalent 22.5-67) kit, which is great for all around. I actually love going into the telephoto range of my kit and I plan on getting a 35mm next (FF equivalent 52mm). That "background compression" makes it look very unique compared to all the smartphone photography out there. Not to mention, all the manufacturers have affordable fast 50mm equivalent options (for Fuji, the XC 35mm f2).

YESSS i love this series!! and your cuts hoodie-that's a solid color! I've used the 50 for a while, but it never stood out to me; it kinda was like the middle lens in that i usually shoot wide or tight at 85, but seeing all the photos you took with it just gets me amped to pick up the RF one! Thanks for all the insight and fun video!!

I have to kind of disagree with you Becki.... For a beginner I always recommend the 50 mm lens for them as a started lens. Plus I never recommend them spending the larger sums of money on a F/1.2 or F/1.4 lens as they are generally double the amount a simple 50 mm F/1.8 lens. I shoot Nikon and use F Mount adapted lenses using the F to Z adapter and I love the nifty fifty F/1.8 lens. It is budget friendly where say I accidently drop it and crack or break it, it's not going to break the bank as I can always pick up a used one on Facebook Marketplace for between $100 and $200 or brand new $250.00. I will agree the versatility of the 50 mm lens with it's medium focal length is amazing for everything from product, lifestyle, portraits etc... I have even used mine for landscape photos. I will also agree for serious detail shots, I would invest in macro lens (like I own...the Sigma 105 mm F/2.8 macro, which I have also done a few headshots/portrait shots with and is amazing for it) Plus even with an F/1.8 to 2.8 you can still get a nice shallow depth of field and bokeh in the background with little to no distortion. But I will agree for landscapes I would go with a wider field of view or telephoto lens (though I have used my Sigma 105 mm in DX Crop APS-C mode on the Nikon Z7 which gives me a 135 mm focal length) for certain landscape as well as wildlife photos (my recent photos of the puffins in Elliston you saw on Twitter and the whales and fox). But for a lot of my wider shots I use my Tamron 24-70 mm F/2.8 lens or I will throw on my SIgma 10-20 mm F/3.5 DX Crop lens which gives me a 15-35 mm focal range.

Back in the 50s when I was learning to take photographs the accepted method was to use only a 50mm on 35mm cameras. One article suggested taking a 1000 images with the 50mm lens. Honestly I didn’t. I knew no one that even got close. Though if you divided 36 into 1000 you really didn’t use up that many rolls. What it force me to do was learn how to process film and make contact sheets. That was my basic training. Figure out the composition, exposure, f stop, speed, and determine the distance to the subject. Then develop the film and make contact sheet. Learning all this in 8th and 9th grade put me way ahead of others when in high school I got on the year book staff. Anyway the 50 or a lens is close to that, maybe 45, with the field of view it produces should be the first lens on learning photography.
