I practice every single day, I make DJ edits of songs I want to play, I've even done a few bootlegs. As a new DJ at 48, I know I will never go pro, but I do something I love every single week. I host dance parties for my ( 3 & 5 year old) nephews and their friends. I'm having the time of my life. You're part of the reason I took that step, and I thank you for it.

And just like you loving every minute of it. Thank you Luke for everything you do for us !. Your fans appreciate it.

What do you mean "go pro"? If you mean Main Stage EDC pro. That's not a pro DJ, that's a performer, an artist, a showman-woman. All that matters is you love music and you love to play music in a way where it means something to you. You're not worried about the light show being right, or the stage being set, or grabbing the mic and standing on the DJ booth, or when the pyro hits, you're just playing music cause you love it and you would play it for 1 person, 100 people or 10,000 people, that makes you a DJ.

I hope you have a great time, I also hope that you can grow enough to see the mistakes are more valuable than the successes. Nothing is greater than connecting to the crowd and having them all go "OHHHHH!" in unison as you drop a track they love. That said, knowing when it is not working and understanding why it isn't will do more for you in the long run. Being a DJ is amazing, but there are more DJ's out that of my caliber than of Luke's (by caliber I don't mean skill, I mean pay scale... its simply a matter of fortune/luck/opportunity that separates the Club from the Festival) MOVING the floor and adding value is all that matters, and often what we feel is a technical error is the MOMENT things happened in and the mistake is a bonus in some way. I once his play, while my second chancel was up and the crossfader was in the middle. I was playing "Not Exactly by Deadmau5" and was cuing up 'Sunglasses at Night by Cory Heart" as someone had made a request. Anyway as I was grooving on my own in my little world making a "remix" in CUE (mistakes and all) I had someone ask me "WHAT SONG IS THIS" I pulled down my earphone to hear them and then I leaned it was playing live. SO shit happened, and I ran with it. Mistakes are awesome.

My favorite memory on DJing was at Club 99 Gaspanjc in Ropponggi, it was the first week LMFAO’s Party Rock got released. I had to cover the main DJ at peak hour due to laptop issues and basically took over his set. The crowd was not happy at first knowing that the main DJ couldn’t play but I picked Usher’s DJ Got us Falling in Love Again then took a gamble on Party Rock Anthem, the reaction was late but when people picked up the rhythm and the beat the dance floor went nuts, the club was shaking and people were dancing like crazy. That was an awesome night. Sadly after 4 years of DJing in Japan my job had to move me to Seattle. Every time I hear those songs it brings back the same memory, to me DJing is creating a moment in the dance floor. Now 2019, 9 years after I decided to buy new gear and rebuild my library. Your vlogs and advice made me want to DJ again.

What's up buddy, I'm actually a new inspiring dj in Boston, who understands the work that is required. Even with a 40 hour work weeks I still play at least 4 hours a day at home trying different mixing techniques and so forth, forever in search of fresh untapped into tracks( all in the love on music) but the unique thing is im 40. YES 40. And no it's not some mid life crisis, lol. I like to think it's will be a good lesson to my 7 year old daughter it's never to late to follow your passion. I have wanted to dj for what felt like forever. but without making any excuses i procrastinated and I allowed value time to slip by so now it almost feels like I'm obsessed maybe because I'm trying to make up for lost time. I know there are things that will just take time to master but your positivity is something appreciated. Only 4-5 months into this I just put my first mix on soundcloud. I like you to, as your a professional, tell me what you think and possibly give me inside advice. Thanks Nelson

i mean i really appreciate what you're doing here luke, telling the aspiring guys to stay true to the art and it isnt always about instagram and pvt jets but imo everyone who hasn't released their music on a big commercial label and still are playing in clubs in their cities/countries, those guys arent headlining shows and going big. you talked about USP - unique selling proposition in one of your vlogs, and i think the usp these days is just the tracks you make more than your dj skills. i think what you said fits well to the very commercial mainstream artists coming up now. also i remember afrojack said in your vlog that "if they're selling tickets they're rightfully there", i don't think anyone who goes to club/festival shows wants to hear the dj scratching and doing something with fx and stuff anyway. personally im into house and techno, and the djs i like don't do weird shit in their sets, and i appreciate them playing the tracks without overdoing FX or scratching. i think djing is mostly about track selection and clean mixing. just my opinion though

agreed Luke.....agreed. It's like a line from the movie DRUMLINE, " If you don't have the honor and discipline to learn your craft, then quite frankly, you don't deserve to be here." I used to study what tracks were being played over seas, because in the vinyl days, USA was months behind Europe. I watch and listened to what tracks were being played, at what times and how the crowd responded. At my own shows, I would watch before me to see what the crowd liked. And keep the flow like a rollercoaster. what fun is a rollercoaster that only goes up then levels out. I always said, "when you bring the vibe down, it only makes that much more fun, to come back up again, and again.....keep it exciting"

I've been a DJ for 10 years, going on 11. However, I have only ever done live mixing in a few small clubs. I have a few questions for you, I would really appreciate if you could address them to help me out! If you Cannot answer them all, The main one I would love to hear a response to is the Creation behind Sets. I've already used your Hotcue method, Tweaked it to my liking, and it's made everything much cleaner. 1. When you go on stage, regardless of how big or small. Even if it's just a party, first off. What goes through your head? Are you nervous or does that ware off after a while? 2. When going on stage, yet again regardless of size. What do you do to prepare, Such as Setlists? How do you know what to mix, and when? Do you write down really good mixes or just remember them? 3. You and Tim Bergling were the main 2 to inspire me to start up Dj'ing and pursue a Career in the art. How difficult was it to start up for you, and actually get more gigs? 4. How do you organize your music? I've Organized mine by Genre, but It kills me because House has SO many sub-genres, and many tracks have multiple Sub-Genres! Would LOVE to hear about these in a Video explaining your process of building a setlist or even an "In My Mind" Episode! Keep up the incredible work Luke. The Vlogs, music and everything you are doing is making Dj'ing so much better for myself.

Feel free to use any of these for your collection: 1 I make sure every song has the correct year, that way I can play some classic 90s or 2000 tracks depending on the age of the crowd. 2 I also organize it by genre, I focus on the main genres (House, Techno) and most popular sub-genres (Deep House, Tech House, ...), if there are even more sub-genres in a song I put these in the Comment field (so they come up during a search) 3 I put the "feeling" of a song in the comment field, (Summer feeling, chill feeling, dark vibe, ...) so I can find similar songs 4 I put the "type" of song in the comment field, I use [B] for 'banger', which are tracks that will make the dancefloor move but are not 'known' songs, I use [H] for 'hits', those are songs that everyone knows and also will make people move, if I need some more engagement I can easily search for those. 5 I put the energy level in the "track number" field, level 4 and 5 are for music where you just can start dancing to (most of the time Deep house falls into this), normal dancing is 6 and 7 (house, disco, ...), wild dancing is 8-9 (elektro house, trance, drum and bass, ...), and if it goes even harder then there is 10. This energy level I use when I want to go from one genre to another to make sure I don't make huge energy jumps, and you can also use it to make sure you don't play too many super high energy tracks after another so that the crowd doesn't get super tired of all the dancing.

This VLOG is spot on. Shame the clubs and promoters don't know this. I have been djing for nearly 20yrs, reading the crowd and controlling the flow is the most fun thing to do. I play in a multi genre bar so have to mix all genres and I can predict when the crowd want me to change it up. I can't wait for the dance floor to empty, then think now is the time to change, I need to proactively control the crowd. I even advise the bouncers when the energy gets a bit high and there is potential for some trouble (I usually bring the energy down with the music before the trouble). The only way I can think of to describe it is like tuning an analog radio, if you get it right the night will be awesome, slightly off and it will still work but you need to be close enough to the mark for it to work. Do I mix in key as a rule no, I mix what sounds good and works the crowd. Remember mixes don't have to last a minute, sometimes a cut is better when the tunes are off key.

I agree with you for as far as that the pure art of song selection and curating those to a crowd ie DJing needs much more respect than it is getting. Yet, there certainly is also a place for producers performing their productions to an audience and using DJing is the medium to do just that. Unfortunately the latter seems to be appreciated much more than the former. I guess that's why I'm nostalgic for the nineties when people used to dance instead of staring at the DJ.
