BTW, a tip for those using AFFINITY PHOTO: The fill tool works pretty much the same with shapes and curves. However, if you will a pixel layer using the gradient fill tool, you won't be able to edit the gradient later.

AP gradient tool always defaults to black and white as does the FX gradient. Much prefer AD gradient, which you've introduced me to - thanks

I start with a rectangle, and choose a color. It turns to gray. When trying to set the two colors of the gradient, it changes to everything but the simple control I am looking for. This was an easy thing in Photoshop. Total Chinese to me here. The tutorial already starts out with everything working, not how to get it to work. You never show how to set up the two colors...that step is already done for the demonstrations. When assigning the gradient to the canvas, it ignores the color I chose and turns to gray.

Hi @jefjaeger , sorry to hear you are having trouble with the gradient tool. A couple points that may be causing the results you describe: Is your document in Grayscale? You can make sure it is RGB by File -> Document Setup -> Color and choosing Color Format. It should be RGB by default, but if you started with a grayscale image, it may be grayscale. When you try to use the gradient tool on your shape, is the shape selected in the layer stack? Can you try it in a document with just a simple rectangle? When you apply the gradient, you can click one of the circles at the end of the gradient. On the Color tab, do you have the option to change the color? What does your color tab look like? Make sure the saturation isn’t set to 0 if you want to use colors. Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes, Trent

Yes, that would be a REALLY nice feature that I would like to see. I believe Inkscape supports it (along with Shape Blending). So you could create it there and import it into Affinity, but it is still an inconvenient process.
