This is where I went to BCT, these were the people who trained me. If any of the NCO's or Officers at Echo 1-50 see this, you guys are absolutely outstanding. SDS Duncan is why I shot expert, and DS Morse was the man who pinned me with my Crossed Rifles. If you see this, you guys manned me up a lot from the goofy high school kid who started, I'm very happy, and not at all surprised to see that SDS Duncan got his Airborne School Badge.

That's exactly why I enlisted split option in the Reserves while in high school and did AIT the summer after graduating. Currently only have 2 years left before I'm a LT. Even the cadets who have no prior enlisted experience irritate me.

@@Techbros53 Because you have to understand the mindset of the people you are leading. Without being one of them first, you (as an officer) will never understand - thus you will not be as good as a leader, nor will you be quite as respected.

And an NCO’s job is to mentor and advise 2LTs so that they can be successful as platoon leaders and go on to be successful commanders.

@@dsettleascii in the 90s I served for 7 yrs and saw more 2nd and 1st Lts that didn't accept the relationship in the way you describe. TL/DR example of a dumb Lt that wouldn't listen/created a command culture that didn't let his NCOs speak up. The Lt insisted it was a good idea to have his scout platoon hump AT mines in during a deliberate attack training exercise into 1/2 Hohenfels (iirc it's a 7x15 km rectangular training area) because in his words "they will find the 9 Tank fighting positions and lay the mines blowing up the defenders when they move into position". How in the actual fk does he expect people to find deliberate fighting positions for tanks in the middle of the night? Let's do some math. The OPFOR used the M60 tank: 7m long x 4m wide = 28m^2 Hohenfels: (7000mx15000m)/2 = 2.8 million m^2 Let's say only 10% of that already halved training area is useable for the OPFOR tanks. That means 5 pairs of guys have to search 280,000 m^2 in the dark to find nine 28 m^2 holes after walking at least 7 km across what is basically hills in the back-country.

@@uwillnevahno6837 I can’t attest to your experiences with newly commissioned officers but I know when I was going through the process of commissioning (ROTC) the dynamic between platoon sergeant and platoon leader was heavily stressed and there was at least one SNCO cadre that helped expound on the difference in roles and responsibilities of the PSG and the PL respectively with the PL being responsible for the overall success and failure of the platoon and understanding the platoon’s operations within the larger context (company and maybe battalion level) while the PSG, with their experience helping the PL make a plan that is most conducive with the commanders intent and helping the PL achieve his objectives within the bounds of reality. I know there’s a lot of pissing contests between officers and NCOs, and I’ve had some shit head NCOs who, quite frankly didn’t understand their role in the organization, but the best NCOs I’ve had have been mentors and have helped me make hard decisions, played devil’s advocate to make sure my plan was a good and safe one, and helped me when I was overwhelmed with everything that a PL is responsible for (signing for 4 bradleys as a 23yo is mind boggling).

@@aliemami4853 Interesting way of filling the manpower shortage. Not sure I would want a new PL training new recruits. Looks like the blind leading the blind. A regular platoon with a good PSG is the best place for LTs. My two cents anyway, cheers!

@@timwallace1629 wrong, these are ALL LTs that this is their first assignment out of school that they do for 1yr then they go to follow on assignment. Unless they were prior service they had never even been to a real unit. approximately 5% of all new LTs get this which sucks because it sucks away their real LT time and once they head to their real unit, they'll sit around in the 3 shop for maybe 6 months waiting for a job and will only get 1.5years of real LT time before going off to CCC to being a woefully inexperienced CPT that could be your company commander. The army is doing a disservice to all involved with this scheme because they cant fill Drill slots.
