The most significant financial blunder I ever committed was with my 401k. During the six years that my kids were in college, my company offered a Roth 401k, but I only began contributing in the third year. Due to assisting my children with expenses, I qualified for tax credits, resulting in an exceptionally low effective tax rate. It was precisely during this period that a Roth account would have been most beneficial! Despite this misstep, I still managed to retire with approximately $350k in my 401k.

On the contrary, even if you’re not skilled, it is still possible to hire one. I am a project manager and my personal port-folio of approximately $750k took a big hit in April due to the crash. I quickly got in touch with a financial-planner that devised a defensive strategy to protect and profit from my port-folio this red season. I’ve made over $150k since then

It's recommended to save at least 15% of your income in a 401k. You can use online calculators to estimate how much you should save based on your age and income. Saving at least 15% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of compound interest and potentially grow your retirement savings over time.

For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement.

The comparison in the title is a bit of a [good] oversimplification. IRA and 401k are two types of retirement *account*. "Traditional" and ROTH are two types of *contribution*. For example, for my 401k account with my employer, I can choose to make a "traditional" aka pre-tax contribution, or a ROTH i.e. post-tax contribution, or a combination of both. Same deal for IRA. So technically you can have four combinations of accounts and contribution types: 1) Traditional IRA - 2) ROTH IRA - 3) Traditional 401k - 4) ROTH 401k. Not saying any of the pros and cons in the videos are wrong though :) just wanna point this out in case one day anyone sees a "ROTH 401k" and wonders what that is.

Whatever you do, make sure you are putting enough in your 401K to meet the employer match. Other than that, check the fees on all your accounts carefully. Remember, if the market does poorly, LEAVE YOUR MONEY IN THE ACCOUNT! Having a stock market crash while you are in your investment period (20-60) will increase the final value of your investment. When you pick your investments, try not to pick stocks that are "hot" because they may already be boosted up on hype, this makes for a lousy long term investment.

Basics based on tax advantage 1.Make sure you are using a low fee service (Vanguard/Fidelity 2. Choose Growth index funds. Avoid value funds. They have poor performance over the last 13 years even though the name sounds nice. 3 Put money into the 401k up to the employer match 4. Max out Roth IRA (lock in low taxes at the moment if you are in a lower tax bracket or expect to be taxed higher in retirement) 5. Max additional money into 401k. (or look into a Roth conversion i.e. backdoor Roth) 6. Invest as young as possible. $100 a month starting at age 18 will likely be $1 million by retirement due to compounding at historical average growth.

Roth is limited to 6k contribution while the 401k is 19k and sometimes depending on your employer you get a match with the 401k. That’s the only reason you could have more money in a 401k but both provide equal returns as they are merely tax shells for your investments.

I think you may be confusing two separate concepts here. "Roth versus Traditional" and "401k versus IRA". Whether you are contributing to a Roth 401k or a Traditional 401k, the max contribution for 2019 is $19,000. Whether or not you are contributing to a Roth IRA or a Traditional IRA, the max contribution for 2019 is $6,000 (with some additional restrictions about contributing to a Roth depending on your income level). No matter what, an employee match will happen in a Traditional 401k, but at least my employer makes the match regardless of the kind of 401k you contribute to. The largest gain you get from a Traditional versus Roth is the increased revenue you get because the money is pre-tax, and you can immediately invest the difference between pre-tax and post tax. A concept I hope Graham will touch on in a future video is the "backdoor Roth" where you can convert your traditional contributions to a Roth structure, so you can strategically decide in what years to pay tax on your contributions (although there is no distinction between gains and contributions for tax purposes during the conversion because it is all considered income). Particularly if you are planning on retiring early, converting to a Roth may be necessary so you have access to the non-gains portion (gains start at the moment of conversion) tax free.

Agree. Also would have been nice to see a comparison. For example, how much money would be in a traditional 401k after 30 years vs a roth 401k after the same time period, and assuming the same rate of return and some income level. Invested dollars are like little workers earning you money. The traditional 401k will have more little workers and so I would expect a much bigger nest egg when retirement time arrives. Yes that money will be taxed, but if it is a much bigger nest egg, than it might be the better choice.

That's a nice feature, but unfortunately defeats the purpose. Most people lack discipline and will hit that plan whenever they want, let alone need, something, and then complain that their plan isn't growing. A 401K does allow for hardship withdrawals, but they do come with taxes and penalties, or you can borrow from the plan and pay your self back. But again, in both cases this is money that is supposed to be for your retirement, not for a vacation or new car, which I see people taking out, and borrowing for all the time. If you treat either plan like a bank savings account, your returns will be similar or you could get crushed by timing. So set and forget as the slogan goes.

If you make $100K today and are in your 20’s and would like 80% of that in retirement. Then you have to take inflation into account. $100K today will be equivalent to about $350K when you retire and inflation has devalued your savings. For this reason a ROTH makes more sense when you are younger. When you are closer to retirement and with inflation and pay adjustments you will be making more like $200K to $250K salary (wages do not keep up with inflation which why housing has become unaffordable for a lot of people) and a traditional IRA might be attractive - however no way of knowing what will be available 40 years from now.

If you do, hit the HSA next, THEN loop back to the 401k. I'm glad to see Graham mention the "uncertain tax rate in the future" but because this is something a lot of people don't consider, and I even thought he wasn't considering it based on earlier statements. Graham, always get the free match, but always, always max out your Roth, and your spouse can contribute the same amount even if only one spouse is working. You need to take into account that your money will double or should double every 7 years, and that is what you will pay taxes on with a Traditional IRA or 401k (the whole amount). Your cost of living will also go up due to inflation, but your tax bracket will change very little. You are not taxed on the gains with a Roth. Tax brackets don’t really matter, especially if you account for inflation/cost of living and all the years of compound interest. Use a time value money calculator to see this, assume 10% compounded for 30 years! You want to pay taxes on the seed, not the tree! Always always max out your Roth and always get the free matching from your 401k. I am licensed in this field.
