I like the concept of the distractable and somehow it negates the excuses I give and allows me to take more responsibility about it. Also agreed on the fact that distractions were always there in the form of TVs and what not. But I don't agree with your take on Professors Newport's idea of quitting social media (I beleive that's whom you were referring to at 5:15 onwards.) While qutting social media for distraction is just one aspect, you can't just ignore the other damage social media brings with it. Jonathan Haidt talked about the rise of social media use with mental health. I think you too must have watched the recent documentary called "The Social Dilemma", and these were the people your first book was aimed at the first place, right? And distraction is not their main focus, it's behavior molding of us the users. Feeding our confirmation bias. If someone is anti vaccine or any quackery, they are fed precisely that. Do you think social media has made us more isolated? Because I feel so. Pardon me I just found you and havenot read your book but the subtitle text of your first book, "How to Build Habit-Forming Products", the core of it seems to build habit. And having social media as a habit is not a good one, atleast to me. Again, not anti-social media, just excellent tool but not for everyone. But thank you for the clear concept of distraction and having a to do list, it was very helpful. Will read your book soon.

Yes, take responsibility. I made a choice to delete all social media, and now I can focus 90% better. Most of the time, one can't win against the psychology strategies applied with the purpose of addiction. Also, the way the guy dismissed the ping-pong argument made me think he is too focused on proving he is right instead of acknowledging the challenges about the argument he is making. I get the point. You are in control, not technology. But it is not that simple.

I think about the distraction part...we can also mention the balance of id and superego, and the fact we run towards distractions as they give us instant gratification like a dopamine rush

One of the things I like to do to reward myself mentally every day is to have a "got done list" where I keep track of everything that I accomplished that day

Brilliant video. The conversation between the two of you was so relatable. I can see how for a long while I've been using an outdated OS through my life. Did not stop to think, "hey this is not working maybe I should try something new". Our tendency to automate actions can be frightening and a blessing. I'm excited to create a schedule that I enjoy and that works for me this time not trying to create something impossible to maintain consistently and frankly fear-generating. For so long I've had to-do list of passion projects that were never touched. Maybe I'd churn out the idea a bit, but then that was about it and now looking at that flusters me. So I decided to completely rid of it and for now direct myself on just slowly and steadily building the fundamentals to becoming indistractible and really just setting aside the rest or more so pushing them to the backbench rather than the forefront of my efforts.

To me, the discussion on Time boxing v.s To do list is the most valuable part of this video. I am a to-do-list person and have horrible experience with time-boxing. During watching this video, I start to think that to do list is more powerful when the things in the list are unbreakable, like homework deadline, scheduled training with someone. While the time-boxing is more powerful when you have a lot of control over when and where you do that thing like online courses or exercise alone. Since quarantine, It seems that I need to reserve more time without distraction than just follow a outside plan. Thank you both!

Amazing video, I downloaded Nir’s book a couple of weeks ago to add to my reading list which life’s “distractions” took me away from but I’ll be definitively finishing it very soon. Powerful information that has given me exactly what I need to take control of my situation. Thank you!

Interesting. I will check out the book. Kevin, when you talked about playing ping pong vs getting distracted on your phone, I agree with you and disagree with the author. When you played ping pong, you accomplished a GOAL. When you grabed your phone and looked at youtube, what goal did you accomplish? 5mins into 45mins, you said you lost track of time. A clear goal was not set. Its the dopeamine rush that people get from games, media and tech that is part of the addication problem. Nir said people have always had distraction for hundreds of years. Yes, thats true, BUT it took more EFFORT to engage those distractions. Sitting down, pushing a button and you get a instant dopeamine rush, just like a rat with an electrode attached to the pleasure center of its brain, everytime it pulls the lever it will get a "hit" of dopeamine. So, the rat keeps pulling the lever. Why stop? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arKoZM5618vRoKs.html "How the Internet Ruins Productivity (by Design)" Kevin, I did like your book recommendaion of "atomic habits" by james clear. Another one you might like is "mini habits" by stephen Guise. www.amazon.com/Mini-Habits-Smaller-Bigger-Results-ebook/dp/B00HGKNBDK/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=mini+habits&qid=1599389800&sr=8-3.

What are this guy's credentials? What makes him an expert in attention? His bachelor's is in political science and his only graduate degree is an MBA. Low-quality content if you ask me.
