It was like an apology to his family after getting out of rehab from alcoholism and also how he always felt the man in the middle between his brothers.

Maurice was an alcoholic for many years. He was accommodated by his brothers, but was unreliable for work. He denied his problem with alcohol but one day he pulled a gun on his wife and family and as far as his wife was concerned - she had enough. She took the kids and went to Barry's place where she was welcomed by the family and the brothers family. Maurice began a rehab programme after that because Yvonne had told him that she was not coming back until he made the decision to clean up. He did and from that time he became tetotal. He never looked back and from 1991 until he died he was drink free. This song could be an admission by him of his problem with drink and asking his family for forgiveness? So good to hear his clear, strong voice singing this with backup by his brothers.

Just a fun fact. That black guitar was given to Maurice by John Lennon. This was a song baring his soul to his wife to forgive him. So he went to rehab and they renewed their vows. He was a very loving man.

I love Mo. He was quiet, but was also a people person, trying always to be personable and chatty. One could see he was complex. And he seemed stuck between "two Alpha-type males in Barry and Robin" (someone in a documentary made that comment, and it stuck with me). However, after 1992-3 having undergone a successful AA program in Miami, I noticed he showed more confidence and spoke up during interviews more, holding his own. Lovely soul, as his brothers also-- Maurice said they had the same love for each other and shared a kind of telepathy during their song-writing sessions. He said they became "as one." These guys can evoke such emotion and make me teary-eyed with affection. They were indeed special people.

It's true that Maurice was the man in the middle. I've heard him actually say in interviews that he felt like he was often the middleman between Barry and Robin because they were both so competitive with each other. Since his brothers passing Barry has said one of his biggest regrets that at the passing of each one of his brothers (including Andy) they were not in the best of places with each other. He has said that just before Robin's passing he saw a photo of Robin looking very, very sick and took it to his (Barry's) doctor and asked what he thought about where Robin's illness had progressed. The doctor told him if he had anything he wanted to say to Robin he'd better go now. Barry flew to England right away and was able to make amends. He says now he wishes they could have handled the competitiveness and stubbornness better.

The idea of Maurice as the ‘man in the middle’ of the Bee Gees helped popularize the song by that title, but it is actually about a man letting people down and telling lies. Lyrically it is the follow-up to ‘The Bridge’, written by Maurice and both his children about their reconciliation after Maurice took control of his alcoholism.

This is snibbits of his life…he was the man in the middle of his brothers, especially when they were younger, he said he was always the peace maker ( like his mom). He had a drinking problem for decades…it got so bad at one time he pulled a gun on his wife In Miami. She took the kids and ran to Barry’s house. Barry and Robin told him to get it together or he was going to be out of the group and loose his wife and kids. They are all family men and that would have killed him. He went into rehab and got his act together. Robin said he wanted to plant his foot in his butt in a Larry King interview. They are all great guys and we’re always really nice to their fans. They did banter and joke around a lot, they were all really funny, especially Robin, he has a wicked sense of humor and the typical British sense of humor. Barry said Robin liked to shock people too with his humor. The twins used to make fun of Barry in interviews that he was boring…( actually, he didn’t do the party, clubbing thing and said he would rather spend time with his family, to him it was everything.

Individually they all have different but fantastic voices but together their harmonies are above any other. Mo was the peacemaker between his brothers. Both Barry and Robin had very strong personalities and as Barry said he had a hard time being the older brother wanting to take control. As they were all adults with their own ideas they sometimes butted heads, especially Barry and Robin with Mo always the peacemaker. I not only love to see their music videos but their interviews and funny videos because you can see what humble, just all around great human beings they were, not to mention funny. They just had a great sense of humor. Thank you for great Bee Gees reactions.

Mo was always undervalued by critics and even by some fans but was basically their on and off stage musical director and wizard who played numerous instruments. He said people tried to break them up by saying to Barry you could go solo and not need your brothers and to Robin you could go solo and not need your brothers, but never said that to him. He also said the group was described as the good looking one, the one with the teeth and "the other one", meaning him. That had to hurt his self esteem! I often wondered if that partially contributed to his drinking problem. Proof of his value was The Bee Gees ended as a unit when he died. The peacemaker was gone. Many who knew them said he was the backbone of the group. Since you mentioned Lennon, The Beatles were impressed with the Gibbs, who were a lot younger, and the often acerbic Lennon said he "dug" them and gave a guitar to Mo for his 21st birthday. Mo was just a cool guy. Robin was later diagnosed with the same twisted bowel (the predisposition present since birth being twins although not identical) so when he experienced the same symptoms they knew what it was and rushed him to surgery or he would have died within days so Mo saved his brother's life. Both Barry and Robin's son Spencer said his dad was never the same after losing his twin and he never accepted it. Even when he was dying he said he wished Mo was with him.

Their psychic "bond" was lifelong! Remember the story of Rob being hit by a van, riding his bike in Australia when the twins were 12. Mo knew something happened and said he had bruises in the same places. Same with the Hither Green train derailment. He knew Rob was where something bad had happened, but also sensed he was "ok".

Closer than close is a naughty song...!!! Very sexy...!!! All sexy G’s songs were lead by Maurice...!!! He was the sexier of the G’s, the classiest, the most stylish, THE SMILE who can melt concrete...!!! In Man in the Middle he also said : Man in the Middle of a complicated plan...!!! 😞 It was about his place in the G’s...!!!.. Mo was a sweet man, (so sweeet..!!) ALWAYS smiling , always joking around...! Does it means, he was totally happy with his place in the G’s... ? NOPE...!!!! 😞😢🙃 He told to interviewer Mrs Redgrave that : ‘’he felt not worthy..?!!! ‘’ 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 If you know the G’s, you must know that Barry asked him (not telling forced him..!!! 🤫🤫🤫) to renew his vows to Yvonne... The G’s were Jew by their mum ..! I’m jew. It’s can sometimes be heavy in traditions..!! Barry’s the Patriach, the Elder..!! It really means something there..!! BG’s FOREVER 💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎💎❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Maurice's place in life was always man in the middle between twin Robin and Barry and his battle with alcoholism. By this time he was about eight years into his sobriety and still attending AA and fully aware of how close he came to losing his family who he loved so much. "And you forgive me but my heart still burns" and "I know that sorry doesn't doesn't tell you what you need me to say but I would die for you" speaks volumes. Happy New Year Texas!

Maurice was writing about his experience as an alcoholic; something that happened between him his wife and daughter finally shocked him into going into the Betty Ford centre where he had to face himself and his mistakes and heal the rift with his family. Which he did. I think this is what it is about. He made an interview called 'Fighting back' it s on youtube.

He’s referencing his battle with alcoholism, his denial, lies, his faithful wife who stayed with him through controlling the addiction to become clean. Amazing artist and group, so underrated by critics for years, but their overwhelming body of hits after hit had critics and music media eating crow in the end! Good for the brothers Gibb!!!

Such a sad song. It sounds upbeat, but it is really sad. "nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide" "looking for someone to show me the light". Sounds as though he's talking about his behaviour with his family when he had problems with alcohol. Always like your reactions Tex. Keep them coming.

I agree. Before the song starts, Barry says that Mo stood naked in front of the mirror when he wrote this song. Metaphorically he did. He laid himself bare in this song - the fact that he can't go anywhere to escape the temptation to drink again and that he's ultimately the only one who can make the choice to stay sober in each moment. That's a heavy burden to carry. He atones to his family. He Carrie's the shame and guilt of his prior actions and can't find a way to let them know the depth of his regret at how he behaved and the effect on his wife and kids. "I know I let you down in so many ways and sorry doesn't do what you need me to say, but I would die for you." He left nothing on the table. It's a wonderful song.

I feel like they knew everything there was to know about each other, being so close all through childhood, and were so respectful of each other .. the banter between them in interviews, shows that .. I like how they shared themselves openly with their listeners, although, Maurice is a little more reserved I've noticed .. so I'm glad to see him get to shine .. Barry said, in one of his interviews, that he misses his brothers harmonizing with him 😟

Maurice ERnest Gibb C.B.E. was the musical WIZARD of the brothers. He could play any instument he was handed, and was the musical diretor of the Bee Gees Band for many years . Mo LOVED to create a MOOD with his tunes. A BRILLIANT example of this is the INSTUMENTAL song Journey To The Misty Mountains from his unreleased solo album called THE LONER. Mo was an alcoholic and his wife took the kids and moved in with Barry and his family until he went and got help. But yes, he was also the one in the middle whenever there were differences between Robin and Barry. So, he also felt guilty about not being able to get Andy to get clean off drugs before he damaged his heart, which is what eventually killed him at 30. I don't know that this song is meant for this but Maurice had a definate problem with alcohol and the words seem to fit with his position while he was in the process of fighting that demon along with the responsibilities he had pulling at him, including working with his brothers, taking care of his family, etc. Along with fighting the adverse effects of Alcohol. I personally think that this was what the song was written to address.

I believe that man in the middle is about him during his alcoholic years and his wife and children suffering terribly through that he was also suffering he was the man in the middle between alcohol and his family he calls himself stupid I'm pretty sure that's what this is about I've listened to it many times and it fits

"Lay it on Me," one of the best, most overlooked songs!!! Glad to hear from someone else who loves it!

@@KA-od5mw Agreed. I also really like "On Time" and Stephen Gib did a version that is INTENSE (although i think I do prefer Mo's version) it's still worth a listen, especially for the more rock oriented fans.

It was about Morris's fight with alcoholism he was stuck between alcohol and his family and wife. His wife had said to him ( When he called from rehab ) That's what I wanted to get cleaned she had said that's what I wanted to hear

Yes, Maurice was always the easy going middle guy for the other two, but this song he wrote after he went to alcohol rehab and is telling his wife that he was a stupid guy but he loves her. He had 10 years sober before he died in 2003.
