Little fact about this great song. They wrote this song for Otis Redding. Unfortenately he passed away before he could record it. ❤🌹 Also the documentary of their history just came out called after one of their songs How can you mend a broken heart.

While it's true Otis Redding was going to record To Love Somebody, it wasn't written for him although some people do think that. The Bee Gees sang this on their first international album called Bee Gee's 1st which was released in July of '67. Otis died in a plane crash on Dec. 10th of '67. The world was cheated out of a lot of great music with Otis' death.

"Run to me" is another good song. Harmonies are wonderful in that one. I believe they started singing harmonies when they were just children. They loved the Mills Brothers. Robin started singing some of the leads in the later 60's. Robin has a beautiful heartfelt voice. Barry will always be my favorite. I've had a crush on Barry since the early 70's. And it's never gone away. Lol "Words" is my favorite Bee Gees song. But so many of their songs come in a close second place!

I think they harmonised from the very beginning as children in Manchester even before they emigrated to Australia. There are clips from shows in Australia around one microphone. New York Mining Disaster 1941 was their first hit in the UK and US in 1967 and the harmonies on that are great. I've heard interviews where they said that what they most wanted to be remembered for was their song writing and their harmonies.

To me the best band ever, they were writers, musicians, singers. They wrote many many songs for other artists. They're my favorite band of all time I listen to them everyday. How do you mend a broken heart, How deep is your Love, nights on Broadway, jive talking, they also had a brother Andy who had his own solo career. The list goes on and on with the Bee Gees. Barry was my teen idle, so is his brother Andy. I listen everyday for 44 years to their songs. I'm 55 and I still listen everyday.

They have been singing together since they were kids.....I think around age 7 for Robin and Maurice and 10 for Barry.....they had a brief split of the group in 1969 and then got back together. They have been a group for 50 years.....now Barry is the only brother left.....they are the greatest group ever.

They had been doing this since they were very young, even before they emigrated to Australia. They have an older sister, Lesley who when they lived in Manchester used to bring home 45’s of the Everly Brothers who also sang together in harmony and were very popular in the 60’s. So the guy’s used to listen to them and then have a go themselves and one time their Parents and their Sister thought it was the record playing when it was actually them. They’d made up their minds very young that this was what they were going too do Barry is 3 years older than the twins but they stuck together in their quest for fame. Music was in their blood though as Hugh their Dad, was a big band leader and Barbra their Mum used to sing with the big bands. They were actually born on the Isle of Man, then moved to Manchester so their Dad could find work. They came to Australia in 1958, lived in Brisbane for a while then moved to Sydney. Their Sister still lives in Australia, but unfortunately Rob, Mo and Andy have passed away. Andy was only 30 when he passed but he also had a thriving music career. The name of the song they were singing when they were kids is called Time is Passing By, and Barry wrote it. I could go on but this will get you started I hope because there’s a lot more to these people than most young people today know. 🎼❤️🇦🇺

The Bee Gees were huge in the 60's and early 70's before the disco rage. I still have many albums and 45's I bought as a teenager. 1941 NY Mining Disaster, Words,I Started A Joke,Massachusetts,I've Gotta Get A Message To You,Lonely Days, and #1 Hit How Can You Mend A Broken Heart to name a few. Then came disco and BAM!! BG's were everywhere. I have always preferred their pre-disco music. Robin sang lead in many songs. The harmonies were their trademark, imo. There were so many great bands in the 60's but the Bee Gees were always one of my favorites. Of course no band could or will ever top The Beatles. Hoping you react to more of their early music. PS I can't thank you enough for all of your Angelina Jordan reactions.

As far as I know, they started together and stayed together. They started their band very young, decided from the first that they would sing together. Their younger brother Andy went his own way, and although he sang songs that his brothers wrote for him, he didn't sing with them.

They broke up for about 18 months when the twins were still teenagers, after their "first fame" phase, & then reunited. Andy was set to join the BeeGees, starting with what became the 'One' album; but, he died before that happened. Can you imagine what music the four brothers together might have produced?

The family moved to Australia in 1958 In the early 60s they became regulars on Brian Henderson’s Bandstand performing original and covered hits of the day. My favorite part of this song in terms of vocals is the belting out of "oh no, no!" towards the end, and that's Maurice, who would normally opt to take a backseat to his brothers. So that's very interesting.

I don't know that I've ever heard that there was one particular song that made them realize how great they were. However, they DID basically disband from Dec of 1969 to mid 1970. During those months apart is where I think they all three, who had tried to go out on their own, and have their own individual careers, realized that they were not as good seperately as they were together. And from that time when they came back together, they DIDN'T part again until Maurice's death in 2003. These guys really WERE ICONS. If you like their music, you should definitely watch the documentary on Netflix. Loved your reaction.

Only old souls can write like that at that age. They broke up for around a year and a half when the twins were 17 and Barry was 20. They were not the same individually and when they came together they were special. They needed each other. They were looking for their own individuality and egos had gotten in the way but the growth when they were apart made it apparent they needed each other.

The fact that they're just insanely talented songwriters with 1 hundred songs that they wrote for themselves as well as other artists being in the top 10 and their diversity is why their music has lasted over 7 decades. Their brother Andy Gibb was an amazing singer songwriter as well. He died too soon in 1988 at the age of 30. Mo died in 2003 and Robin in 2012. They are by far the most talented musical family in the history of music. RIP Andy, Mo and Robin.

These were big in their day and this song as well as “ How deep is your love” has been covered by bunches of other artists. All three of them have said at various times that the song dictated who sang what. Each of their songs generally all have three part harmony. It’s one of the things they are known for. Also Maurice has stated that many times Barry and Robin are singing together and it is a whole different sound then each of them separate. The example he gave was “ Fanny be tender with my love”. Maurice came in on the harmony sections. He also did some leads as well, not as much as the others--but mainly as he stated that at the time he wasn’t reliable. Check out his story on “Fighting back, hosted by Lynn Redgrave out on KZfaq.

A lot of people believe (And I used to be one) that this song was written specifically for Otis Redding, and that the BeeGees decided to record after he died. I thought so too until I realized the dates didn't match up to that story. Otis loved the song when he heard it. He mentioned it in an interview or something. He was going to cover it. The BeeGees couldn't have decided to record it after he died. To Love Somebody was one of the songs on the BeeGees first international album called BeeGees 1st. That album was released in mid July in 1967, several months before Otis Redding was killed in a plane crash on Dec. 10, 1967.

They have been singing all their lives, three part harmony. Check out some really early songs when they were kids back in Australia. ( on KZfaq). They were actually born on the Isle of Man and their family migrated to Manchester then to Australia.
