If you are not a seasoned bee removal specialist DO NOT attempt to do what you see in this video in a high traffic or populated area. I had the equipment, chemicals and ability to shut this thing down in just a few minutes if necessary. Thankfully no one but Bob and I were stung on this day. The general public doesn't typically notice bees flying and when warned to stay back don't typically heed the warnings even when the guy yelling at them is wearing a protective suit. If you have to work in housing complexes or tight neighborhoods, please take all precautions.
These bees were rehomed less than a mile down the street in one of Bob's apiaries. Their temperament changes just with the move and they are now workable. The same queen is still with them. Sometimes it's hard to know what sets a hive off.
I know for most of you the extremely defensive behavior of these bees would have you assuming there were africanized genetics present. Although we did not have these bees tested, I'm certain they are not africanized as we are in the center of the Mississippi coastline and the closest bees I know of with africanized traits are approximately seven to eight hours west of us in Texas. It would be some kind of a miracle for those genetics to skip Louisiana and half of Mississippi and end up in a single colony that requeened itself last summer and only turned defensive this spring.
We regularly do hive removals in this part of the Mississippi coast and the bees are usually your run of the mill, docile, Italian variety honey bees.
This removal was done on February 21, 2023 during Mardi Gras.

I’m sure someone has mentioned Africanized Bees but do you ever send samples on an aggressive hive to one of the entomology departments at a state university to test to determine if a hive Carrie’s that gene?

I got my bee vac from Tony. Drove to his place. He was so nice and he has an amazing product. Just as I got it a friend had a swarm move in and I got them. Minimal comb stuffed them in a hive and they are up and running. Very tame bees. I love the Everything Bee vac. was interesting to see such an aggressive hive get a bit tamer once the numbers were reduced.

My grandfather was a beekeeper. During summer months I would help him maintain his hives. Well one summer I had the "bad Bee suit" Apparently they made entry in my LEG. I made the big mistake of swatting my boots and legs. Must have been stung at least 30 times. You get stung enough you Kind of "get used to it". Put it this way, at the end of the day I was in my little Studio Apartment in his barn, Swollen Leg propped up, but back at it the next day. Grandpa would tell everyone how I was "Dancing in the tulips" that day. LOL

No need for liquid smoke. Just put some tree leaves in the smoker and smoke each others jackets, I jnow this secret from Hornet and wasp jobs, oh and camo colored bee suites no its not a joke lol camo works. Keep your smokers going. (By the way I am getting 2 rooster T shirts period) Usually when other wise calm bees suddenly become aggressive and attack in big numbers its a sign that Apis Scutallata crosses have reached your area. Usually they are a lot smaller but when the wild types crosses you get hybrid vigor. When this happens it can take the enjoyment out of bee keeping unless you live way out in the sticks and wear full protection at all times when around your bees. Apis Malifera can be bad enough but when crossed boy can they be mean and when I say mean I mean mean lol just look at the video, Get Mr Ed in there he will sort them no problem. haha

I never test for mites. I use the essential-oil treatments after removing excess frames and honey in late summer. The bees seal the essential oil pads with propolis, but it doesn't seem to bother or harm them. I tried one of the hops-based treatments, but that aggravated the bees so bad, I'd call them "hopping mad". There were also dead bees stuck to the treatment strips, so I avoid the hops now. I've never tried the synthetic chemical miticides. I prefer to leave my bees alone to do their thing, so besides the essential oils, I just put supers on, take them off, and catch swarms. Each year, I come out of winter with one more strong hive in my yard (from catching spring swarms), so they must be doing ok. I think that catching swarms is my favorite part of beekeeping. I've never done a cutout, but I admire your work!

I have also found they calm down once exposed. Here in FL they seem to attack the most when starting to remove or expose them, Once the hive is open they seem to change their attention. Knocking number downs helps here as well. I wash my Guardian Jacket after every 3 removals of right after a defensive hive removal. Only 2 hives that stung me through my suit and 1 of them is my gentlest hive now. Make sure all zippers are closed before washing and hand was the veil. I also like latex gloves as it gives me more tactile feel. I double and triple glove for angry removals. I also hate the smell of liquid smoke so won't be using that.

I believe you are correct about feral bees being relatively immune to the effects of varroa and the diseases they transmit. I now have 24 hives which is by no means a large apiary. Having said that, I have never treated my bees and the only ones I have lost were due to the the direct consequences of something I failed to do. I think the need to treat bees is due to having large numbers of hives on a small footprint with the resulting drift of bees from their hive to another, causing spread of mites and disease. So I do not fault anyone for treating if they need to. But by spreading fewer hives to many locations and minimizing drift with alternate paint schemes on hives, facing entrances in alternate directions, using some long horizontal hives which can’t be mistaken for a vertical hive, doing splits for brood breaks, etc. and having feral bees that have learned to deal with varroa, a small beekeeping operation does not have to treat period.

From what I’ve learned, bees don’t like the color black. Maybe that’s why they’re stinging your hands, because of your black gloves. I don’t know, I’m definitely not a pro! This is all new to me. I’ve very recently become intrigued with beekeeping. I’m not a beekeeper, but I’m interested in becoming one. I’m mesmerized watching the videos of all you bee wranglers! I started first with watching Mr. Ed’s videos, then I migrated to your channel (because of his videos). My son is a young Catholic priest. The first 4 years of seminary, he attended Mt. Angel Seminary in Oregon, which is a Benedictine monastery, like St Joseph monastery in Louisiana. St Benedict’s monastery at Mt Angel supports themselves by making beer from hops. (I find that an interesting correlation between the two monasteries, very closely related in their respective traditions). On Easter Saturday, we went to our son’s church on Kauai (we live on Maui, year round bee season, from what I understand), and he explained in his homily a lot about bees, honey, and beeswax. There is a Catholic chant on Easter that includes “mother bees”, that relates to the Virgin Mary. He explained in his homily that the reference to mother bees, is that they are virgin mother bees (female worker bees) and he correlates it to the Virgin Mary in his homily. The Catholic Church has a candlelight service on the Saturday night before Easter, referred to as the Easter vigil. The congregation lights beeswax candles during a candlelight service, taken from the fire from the Easter candle that the priest lights first, and everyone lights their candles from that candle. The inference is that the fire from that first candle and passing the fire to everyone’s candle, represents the Holy Spirit spreading through the people, represented by the wick. Our son, the priest, said that Jesus is the candle, and the Holy Spirit is represented by the wick. Very interesting church history. I wasn’t raised Catholic, so the backstory is very interesting to me. There are a lot of biblical references regarding bees and honey in the Bible. I was raised Protestant, but have since come to believe, through my own spiritual journey, that Catholicism is the one true Christian faith, because it was the original Christian religion, with St Peter as the first Catholic bishop. I know that the history of the Catholic Church is full of controversy and abuse, however so is every other Christian offshoot of the Christian faith. Protestant churches have had more than their share of controversy. May God bless you and your family. You are a good man, from what I’ve seen of your videos. Thank you for your entertaining videos and for sharing your knowledge and experiences. BTW! I love the music you are playing during your videos!

Randy , sure am glad you clarified the “skinny jeans” Was a bit concerned for a second ! 😂 Does spraying a removed colony with water keep them subdued as you transfer them from the vac to the box ? I’m anaphylactic to the stings so I wear regular clothes under my Hillco vented suit and a band aide Over the tip of my nose , a baseball cap , and a pair of Harbor freight mechanics gloves with my goatskin bee gloves ( airtight) Praise God this setup, although warm keeps my epipen in its case ! My allergies changed about 3 years ago when at that point the stings never bothered me , love beekeeping too much to give it up ! Great video as usual , thanks !!!

My newbie understanding is that allowing your bees to swarm breaks the brood cycle and cuts of the mites' food supply. Nature's way is usually better. "Commercial" beekeepers are sometimes like other agribusiness - industrial more than agricultural.
