On October 16, 2011 I was invited to fly on Robert Scherer's Beechcraft Starship (N514RS) from Aspen, CO (ASE) to Page, AZ (PGA) to Orange County, CA (SNA).

When I was an early teenager (born 1980) this particular aircraft was my dream. I got into flying R/C airplanes because of this aircraft due to my fundamental fear of heights and tendency to freeze. This classic girl was my first introduction to what divine Fibonacci curve along with my discovery of loving bigger girls--human AND machine, F-14 Tomcat is THE prime example of bigger girl that gets sh*t done!--and seeing this classical girl taking to the skies just reminds me of when I learned how much I loved Playboy Playmates in the late 80s and early 90s and even now, the ideal aesthetic sticks with me. So wonderfully nostalgic to see such a graceful girl spreading her wings. Douglas DC-3 is about the closest comparison I can think of to reference for such a classically beautiful girl. Even now, my wife does not understand how I can attribute such divine and technical beauty to a machine, but, she...still married me, had a kid, many puppers with me just over 13 years ago when we both said "I do," She doesn't get how machines can get me in the feels like they do (Enterprise NCC-1701-D) with their curve. Even when I explain the math of it, she still just tells me: "Well, I don't get it, but, if it does it for you, then, I'm good. Never have to worry about you leaving me for a machine." I asked her about the VX-14 Playboy...? LOL!

I had the privilege of seeing this exact plane in Salina, KS in 2005. We hosted the first non-stop world wide flight for the global flyer, another design from Mr. Rutan. I think I took more photos of the Starship than I did of the Global Flyer. Such an amazing plane, I hope to get a chance to see it again. It was way ahead of it's time and wish it would get a second chance.

God I love these planes, hope to see one in person someday! When this thing throttles up all I can hear in my mind, for whatever reason, is “Starship, Houston go at throttle up”

Every year a Starship would land at our airport around the time of our farm show in Tulare. Not sure if it was this one but it looked the same. If you want a unique plane that stands out from the rest, this is it.

I went through one of these at an air show in 1995. So cool. What is that antenna on top? Others don't have it?

Sweet plane and it seems quite quiet. Was that landing at Orange County a little windy?

The glass cockpit is kinda funny looking now compared to modern cockpits. No tapes back in those days. There's actually a digital altimeter and airspeed indicator. :) I remember when the startship first came out though. Back then, it literally did look like a starship. I had a puzzle from Sporty's Pilot Shop of the cockpit. Ah, to be a teen again.

I like the simplicity of those displays. Sure, there are lots of buttons and switches, but muscle memory would let you find whatever you want. The modern "multi-function" displays seem too cluttered, but I learned to fly years ago on analog gauges.

I live in Wichita and used to see these things all the time, they had a unique sound and you could tell when one was in the area. I miss seeing them, don't miss the noise as much...but I guess you have to take the good with the bad. I'd rather see these things than all the other cookie cutter business jets. Really, I'd say it was just too ahead of it's time.

Boy what I would give to ride along. You’d have to put a gun to my head to keep me out of the right seat. Biggest thrill of my life was a ride along in a straight wing Lear 😎
