Beekeeping - Our First Harvest From the Top Bar Hive
This is the second season with this top bar hive, which has been going absolutely gangbusters lately. I've strained most of the honey from the wax and from six top bars I got about 10kg (22lb) of honey.

Very awesome! It is always fascinating how many different hive configurations can be used successfully (Langstroth, Warre, top-hive, AZ, etc.). There is a style for every beekeeper. We are presently running mostly Langstroth, but that is mostly because we picked most of them up for free. We want to add the AZ/Slovenian style in the next year or so and place that in the areas that are prone to bears. Great videos. I hope you keep posting.

Please watch this video from BeeLanding "Extracting honey from a top bar hive". It just kills my soul watching folks cut that drawn comb off like everybody mistakenly does.

Thanks so much for this video. I now finally got my head around what top bar beekeeping looks like now. That one hive provides way more honey than a family needs: fantastic! Since it looks so easy and cheap to use a top bar, I’m wondering why you prefer a Langstroth style hive?
@PopsShack
@PopsShack 4 жыл бұрын
I prefer the Langstroth hive because I have several and it's easier to extract the honey and reuse the comb.

This brings the season total to about 75kg of honey and ROUGHLY 25kg of cut comb. And we still have more to harvest but I'm not in a huge rush for that.

Depending on the temperature I would never allow someone who is allergic to bee stings near bees even if they're dresssed for the occasion.. Bees can get in anywhere and the anafilactic shock is not worth the gamble.

Hi Sam & Angela, what are the advantages of this type of hive over the traditional style?

They're cheap and easy to build and you don't need special equipment for extraction.

Hey Sam ,what width are your top bars ? I am using 32mm but have to use 6mm spacers strategically to reduce cross comeing .
@PopsShack
@PopsShack 5 жыл бұрын
I think most are at 35mm. Some are a bit narrower. I don't have a lot of problems with cross combing.

Manuka honey is HIGHLY over rated so the hyperbole can artificially drive up the price of an Australian honey.

Are top bar hives really worth the trouble?
@PopsShack
@PopsShack 5 жыл бұрын
They're not a whole lot of trouble. You won't get as much honey as you would from a Langstroth hive but it's also a lot less trouble and expense.

I shallow frames for cut comb production. I harvested about 25kg of cut comb just after Christmas and I'll probably harvest that much again before the season is done. I got about 11kg of honey from these six bars and a kilo of wax. That's almost $250 from just SIX top bars.
