Take a look as we harvest some honey from the top bar beehive I made earlier this spring. It's great to see how well the hive did in its first year. We also add some additional bars to the hive to give the bees some more room.

John I have to echo other people and say that I'm loving the bee videos, and seeing that honey oozing out made my mouth water. Definitely my favorite sweetener for everything. To be able to harvest it fresh like that (while work on yours and the bees' part) is just awesome.

I bet you could build a queen excluder bar on each end of the hive to make sure you get your honey, then just keep inserting new bars before that if you want more brood. Love your channel I found it for woodworking but used to keep bees up in MA, this was a great video, thanks for sharing.

In my Colorado TBH design I made the follower board out of plexi glass so I can view the bees from the end and see if they need any more bars put in. My entrance is at one of the ends rather than in the middle so the bees are building their colony out from the entrance.

🐝🐝🐝 G'day Jon, nothing like the taste of your own honey, don't forget to weigh your harvest and keep a record in a little note book it helps to be able to compare seasons and when you get another hive and you will 😀 to compare the strength of the hive, meantime enjoy your well earned honey, Tim. 🐝🐝🐝🐝

I followed Jon's plan almost exactly (might have mismeasured a cut by 3/4 inch) this is my first year also and my hive its doing amazing. The build was easy and the bees love it. GO FOR IT. I used scrap wood from a Re-store $10 and had to buy new hinges $7. Good luck!

Dang, I'm really surprised that it didn't swarm given the number of bees hanging out underneath. As for splitting in the spring, what you should do is look for drones. As soon as you see drones you can split your hive without a queen. Just take half of the hive with the queen and put them in the new box. If there are eggs left in the old hive they can make a new queen. It is important to move the queen to the new hive in a new location, or move the original hive with the queen in it to a new location. You will end up with a second hive with no cost other than the time and materials for the TBH.

Tip if you want to harvest honey that has a little brood on it you can cut the brood off and use a big hair clip and clip on the brood then use elastics or string to attached it to the bar till thay hatch.

I was wondering how the hive was doing; I believe the last time I had seen anything about the hive they had survived a near miss from a falling tree. Glad to see you are getting some honey... and maybe more importantly, getting some wax for your art. Now, when do we get to see some "home grown" art? I'm really looking forward to that video. Thanks again for the inspiration your provide.

Thanks, Jon, for your quick reply - That's what I thought but all the beekeepers around here (who do not have top-bar hive experience) are worried that this leaves an extra entrance for predators or even that the bees may start using the roof space to build comb - just also would like to say thank you for your ever interesting Art & Woodworking videos.

Been watching all your videos since you started but have been really curious with your bee hive program and am enjoying that! First I am wondering where you live to get the idea of weather and I am curious what you do with bees in the winter? I live in moorhead mn across the red river from fargo nd and may take up this subject but need to get all the education I can for this as I raise apple trees and I have noticed sharp decline in bees. Thanks for your time. Andy

Good video Jon, was almost disappointed when it ended - as really wanted to see the processing of honey. The cap almost looks grey? But inside it's a rich gold. Seems crazy to see the amount of bees you now have, when to start you had to buy them in. How are bee keepers expected to control the population? As you mentioned about a Swarm a few times which makes me nervous haha!

@mohawksniper79

I found with top bar hives it's better to jest harvest the hole comb and let them build new comb I know it takes them a little long but there is less to no problem with pest and foul broud it's keeps the hive cleaner and stronger. from what iv seen anyway. may not be that way for every hive but that's why I like top bar. also I think when the Queen swarms she not only is looking for more space but to have fresh clean comb to lay in. jest a thought tho.

I see that you are intending to make another hive with plans - I have built a hive based on yours and have one immediate question if you could help - I can't figure out how the lid fits - I see it rests on the cleats at the end and sits outside the top bars at the sides - I can't see if the sides are sealed in any way - are you leaving a big hole at the sides?

Hi Steve, the sides are not sealed, there is about a ¼ - 3/8 space between the ends of the bars and the sides of the lid on each side.

I see a healthy bee. But I can not understand. Why does not a bee colonies build ordinary honeycombs, and not drone honeycombs? We only build swarms in the Vologda region. Ordinary bee colonies after wintering build only droned cells.
