I'm a fan of map-based navigation systems, so could the Beeline Moto convince me to use turn by turn instructions? It uses the GPS feed from your mobile phone and stores the route on the Beeline. Without the need for a power-hungry phone display, you get much much longer usage time than with a traditional navigation app. It's also small, discreet, and easy to mount. Here's how I got on...

Haha, I had to chuckle since I was out yesterday evening riding the same roads as you, on my Speed Triple with the Beeline turned on. I backed this project from the start and so got a couple of units much cheaper than their current price. I wanted a nav device on the Speedy but didn’t want to use my Garmin purely because of the physical size of it and the mount. I wanted something totally unobtrusive and the Beeline fitted the bill. I totally agree with everything you’ve said in your review. As for the lack of voice prompts, I’ve not used them on my Garmin for years as I got fed up with the incessant prompts through my headset. Once you tune in to visual prompts, you take in the info in a fraction of a second with no problem. The Beeline display is clear in all weather conditions and extremely easy to read. A great little unit and well worth having. Yes, maybe it is a little more expensive than I thought it would be but still far less than a Garmin/Tomtom and so much more versatile than a phone (I’ve been in many far-off places in Europe well out of reach of a network signal.....what do the phone users do then?)

Great review! 100% accurate with my experience using the beeline moto. I opted to use the ram mount that I made from the supplied mount. Voice control would make this optimal. At first I did find a slight learning curve adapting to the beeline. Definitely a couple rides will make the rider more aware of how the device works. Overall, love this video.

Thanks for the great review. Voice prompts is a software change on the phone app - no change to the unit itself. It's the phone's GPS reception and Bluetooth that the Beeline unit uses. The Beeline unit on the handlebar is merely a remote screen for the software. The lack of voice prompts is an amazing omission- it's not difficult or complicated to implement and would have zero impact on the unit that sits on the bike. I would buy the unit in an instant if it had voice prompts. On a wet windy ride, I really do not want to try and read a wet beeline unit direction through my wet visor- that would be a danger to all.

I've just looked up the price. It's in the same ballpark as fully fledged stand-alone units. I'd consider it if it was sub 100 quid... But 200 is just too much for something that's just an app on your phone with tiny wireless screen to complement it. The idea is good. Just too pricey.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 4 жыл бұрын
Its a point that a few people have raised. I didn't think £150 was too bad for a system that has all you need to mount it and get going. Plus its water and shock proof. You'd struggle to find a stand alone unit that does all that at the same price point. But I do take your point.

@@Frightningman I'm saying it's in the same ballpark. And it's £200 on manufacturer website. It's just too much for what it is (basically a smartphone app and a tiny screen). Really like mine. I also ride a bicycle and Beeline Moto works on both bikes so think it's pretty good value for money. Additionally they're a small British company who are doing interesting things with sat nav so I don't mind paying a bit more. I've used a phone for my GPS and always found it a bit obtrusive, clunky, and a killer on battery life. There's also the worry that someone will snatch it (joys of London living). Personally I'm all about the simplicity and neatness of the Beeline. I'm not fussed with turn-by-turn voice prompts, enjoy using the compass mode to just pootle about. The only thing I'd like to see would be speed camera warnings.

A good review which reinforces my decision to invest in one. I met up with a rider who had a Beeline (I'd never heard or seen one before) & I've got one on order now. I'd been considering a dedicated sat-nav for my bike but somehow £300+ for something I'd use occasionally didn't seem worthwhile. I've just got back from a week away in the Cotswolds & I could've used a sat-nav then. Coming back & avoiding M-ways I resorted to written directions on the tank but the Beeline would've been v useful. I await its arrival.....

This is a great review. An unambiguous & informative real world presentation of the beeline’s features. I was sceptical when I first saw this for all the reasons you mentioned regarding presentation and the lack of a map. Having watched this I’ve completely changed my mind. The ability to import ipx files is a really big plus point. The software looks good, which is more than can be said for my crappy Tom Tom rider 40 which must be the worst sat nav I’ve ever used and I’ve had lots of car based Tom Tom units in the past. There are a lot of good comments being shared that should help people understand. The first thing I want to mention is I have gotten lost riding, and I had my phone, but even with a good cellphone signal the two programs I see (waze & google maps) froze up and kept searching (leaving me looking like an idiot on my bike in 100 degree swearing my behind off while staring at my phone. The Beeline works perfect for getting me back on track. My only wish is that it has a great clock feature that I wish you could leave on if you didn’t need to use the beeline that particular day, but it goes back to direction mode after about 20 min, but it is one really built GPS and easy to use 😎👍

Nice. I like the idea of this. I’ve got a phone mount but always fear I’m one pothole away from losing it. If I go out on a ride round the Yorkshire Dales I just need to know where the main turns are so this would do the job. I don’t need audio prompts because an occasional glance at my bars is no big deal. You’re much more likely to get fixated on a device with a big, pretty map I’d say. Think I’ll wait until the current crisis is over but might well buy one 👍

Some have complained about the price. I can see where they are coming from. I think otherwise. Firstly, a phone is not the best thing to mount on your motorcycle. It needs good waterproofing and mounting security, all of which adds to the complexity of installation and there is the constant faff reattachment. Next, good apps cost money to build and designers who create a really great interface deserve reward. This is an easy to use device with simple guidance instructions. It’s one of those cases where less is more.

Great mini review, thanks Tony 👍 Question: Is the unit itself GPS or does it rely on a mobile phone for gps data? Ie. if your phone battery dies after feeding the unit your instructions, will it still work? I think it's a smart little compact looking unit that doesn't clutter up your bars. Sometimes... less is more. I have a Garmin I bought a few years back which had all of the 'European' maps installed with lifetime map updates. HOWEVER... and this is how they get you... the 'fixed' integral memory is now insufficient for all the maps, as the map database grows, with no option to upgrade memory, so I can now only have the UK and N Ireland map installed. Yes, I can uninstall maps to replace it with other country maps but it's a faff! If this little unit just points & shoots and leaves your phone to do all the updating, that's a good thing and provides a reduced level of redundancy.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve, it relies on the phone GPS, it doesn’t need a data feed and of course it doesn’t require the phones screen to be constantly on like a nav app would, so it puts a relatively minimal strain on the phones battery. But yes if the phone dies, so does your navigation

Hi Tony, nice review, thanks for that. A couple of points occur to me. 1 Since you still have to carry your phone with you in your pocket or wherever, I don't really see how the Beeline is superior to using your phone as a nav with a charging cable from the bike. That gives a full map using Google maps or whatever mapping app is preferred, rather than just turn-by-turn, and provides voice as well if you want it via a Bluetooth helmet speaker. Also, the rather high cost of the Beeline is way more than a phone mount. 2 Using the Beeline with your phone in your pocket, although the device battery life is you say about 30 hours, your phone certainly won't be anything like that. As you know, nav apps on a phone kill the battery very quickly so don't you still need to keep your phone constantly charged whilst using the Beeline, either from the bike or a separate battery pack?
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks and good points. So, 1. I didn't say the Beeline was superior to a phone, its just different. One thing I was trying to get across in the review was that turn by turn can be just as effective as a map-based system. The lack of voice prompts is a negative, but as I mentioned a lot of people don't use comms systems. There is also starting to be some evidence particularly with the newer smartphones, that the vibration they get when mounted on a motorcycle could be damaging internal parts. I think some of the newer iPhones have had issues with the anti-vibration mechanisms? 2. This is true, but a big reason why nav apps chew the battery is because the display is constantly on, that seems to be the biggest draw on any device. The Beeline only requires the Bluetooth connection, and the phone is only utilising Bluetooth plus the GPS signal. This should give a significantly longer use time. Of course, you can always power the phone from a charging pack, or indeed as some of the new triumphs allow, you can place it under the seat to keep it charged. I had intended to go out for a day-long ride to see how long the phone lasted but wasn't able to due to the Coronavirus lockdown.
@perhaps6112
@perhaps6112 4 жыл бұрын
@@mancavemoto Thanks for the quick reply Tony Bluetooth is itself a significant battery drain on the phone battery, so even if the display is off, I'm guessing phone battery life probably won't be that great. So on any ride much longer than say an hour or so, it is very likely that phone charging on the go will be essential for using the Beeline. And once you have to do that, you may as well use the phone as a nav in the first place, and enjoy the potential additional benefits of a map and voice if you want it. However if vibes damage phones, which I hadn't heard, then that is a good reason not to use them I suppose. It is though very common to use phones as navs on bikes without problems. Apologies for being rather negative on the Beeline but I can't see much reason to prefer it over a phone as a nav, especially given the cost.
@gbrand42
@gbrand42 4 жыл бұрын
I can ride for a full day with the Beeline and a fully charged iPhone and after 9 hr's i still had over 60% charge. The drain is significantly less than when using the phone as the navigation unit.
@perhaps6112
@perhaps6112 4 жыл бұрын
@@gbrand42 That's very useful info, thanks. Far longer phone battery life than I would have guessed. But even so I can't see any advantage of the Beeline over using a phone as a nav, on the contrary there are several negative comparisons. In my case I have a Garmin nav charged from the bike. I also carry my phone in a tank bag and it too has a charge lead off the bike. Even if I didn't have the Garmin, I'd just use my phone as nav with a secure mount, because it offers so much more features than the Beeline. Anyway thanks to Tony for the review. I had heard elsewhere of the Beeline and it was very informative to see it in action, regardless of my opinion of the device.

Just bought one, likely going to use the elastic band mount, checked first you can get replacement elastic bands - and mine will come off in my pocket, same as TPMS when I'm off the bike. Will do what I need it to (ie finding a dealer for test ride on strange area) or get me home from group rideouts - and the compass mode looks interesting

Yes its a good solution for simple navigation. Some people are getting a bit pissy about it, making a comparison to a map based solution, but the point I was trying to make is exactly what you commented. Its easy to switch from bike to bike, and its a much lower profile. Thats good for people that don't want a massive device mounted on their classic or custom bike. It also means its quick and easy to fit and you can shove it in a pocket easily.

Very nice review and I've been looking for something small and simple. Two questions - do you prefer this to the Scenic and Rever apps? And preferences between the Scenic and Rever apps?
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 4 жыл бұрын
Cheers. It's a different device in real terms, but I kind of like the fact you can store your phone away and still have nav. The route planning is good, but you do have to manually set one on the app if you want something more interesting than a direct route. The curvy route option on Scenic is really good, and it has taken me on some fantastic journeys, without having to painstakingly plot it out on a device. It all depends on what you want the device to do. I'll still use my TomTom rider and I'll probably still use both Scenic and Rever, but if you want a no-frills dependable, simple and rugged nav system this is very good. Some people are getting a bit tetchy about it, but I never said its a replacement for map-based GPS. For me its easy to move from bike to bike, it works well and if I just need to get somewhere efficiently. Having said that you can always use the other apps to plot routes then just export it as a gpx file onto the Beeline? I've noticed that as smartphones progress they seem to be becoming a little more fragile (anti vibration mechanisms etc) maybe this is a good solution?

@@mancavemoto Tony - I appreciate the detailed response. I often enjoy getting (roughly) lost and discovering what some new road offers. But I've been looking at navs, apps, etc but found the comparison shopping very frustrating. As the Beeline can accept gpx files, combined w/Scenic, this might work well. My ride is a Ducati Monster 1200s and there isn't lots of room for stuff. The Beeline's mobility - for my KZfaq videos - is appealing too. Thanks again and I look forward to your next video. Stay safe. Cheers, Scott

The beeline does not have a sensor in it for the back light. So if you ride into a tunnel the back light will not come on. The beeline takes the lighting up time from your smart phone. ie dusk to dawn so if it’s dark outside the unit will automatically turn on its back light. When it’s day light it will turn off. All done from smart phone.

Dangerous... because it doesn't have voice directions you have to look at this little device to see where you're going. Moreover, how can it possibly give accurate directions at complex intersections where you have 3-4 streets crossing one another? Probably would be okay on a bicycle, but a disaster on a scooter or motorcycle.
@mancavemoto
@mancavemoto 4 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. As I demonstrated in the video, it only takes a quick glance to see what the next instruction is. The directions are very accurate as you have a measured countdown to the junction/turning. Very rarely are you going to come across a scenario where turnings are so close to each other that its hard to determine. Certainly not a disaster on a motorcycle. Thats why I always road test these products for a while, as opposed to just guessing

Yes it does, you have two options in Route mode. You can switch it to re-route, so if you miss a turn or there is a road block it will find a new route for you as you go. If you switch the re-route option off, its assumes you want to stick rigidly to the original route and will give you instructions to get back onto that route, which could involve a bit of ‘round and round’ action.
