Out in the apiary checking bees we discovered a lid had blown off a colony during snow storm. We use screen inner covers so the snow had accumulated on top and the heat from bee cluster had melted a snow cavity just above the cluster and they were using the snow mound as a make shift covering. Wow bees are so amazing.
It must have been those Appalachian mutt genetics from @NaturesImageFarmGregBurns doing their best to survive in extreme conditions. I requeened that colony this past fall with one of Greg’s queens.
Let’s hope they survive until spring so I can keep those genetics.

Maybe the snow on top helped the ladies hold some heat in. That is pretty crazy!!

Bees are amazing! I thought a couple of your hives tipped at first but remembered you had some unique hives that are at an angle. Thanks for sharing!

Got to strap those hives in winter.

We don’t strap hives. Never have. Mainly because we have too many and it’s just not efficient for our operations. Honestly never had an issue in 7+ years until this last snow storm we had. But I can appreciate why some do strap their hives.
