As someone that does pest control, I appreciatethis video & your efforts & showed me that allot of customers that have hives, tells me just how little effort most put into raising bees for honey! We as humans are very ignorant & out of touch of the big picture & how we are all dependent on every living thing around us!

This is great! I am a new wanna be beekeeper. In the last few months I have joined my local beekeepers association and also attended a bee school.I was also gifted a new beehive for my birthday this past weekend. My husband and I already put it together and it now just needs bees but I was told not to try to get bees now that it’s mid May. Is this true? I know I would have to feed them for a while and that I would not be getting honey this year, but should I not help a colony establish? If I did catch a swarm how much sugar syrup should I feed? Do I also feed polen since this is a brand new hive with no stores at all? Thank you.
@BohemiaBees4 күн бұрын
Congratulations welcome to the craft. May isn’t too late to start a nucleus colony. We release our spring nucs in the end of May. I make splits in July. It’s all about focusing on the bees not getting honey that year. It depends also on your location. You should feed 1:1 syrup initially and switch to 2:1 in September if you are in my region. They will find pollen but not all flora is still producing nectar. You can use pollen sub pattys but need to watch it in the summer and fall because it’s a breeding ground for small hive beetles if your bee volume isn’t strong.

I will attest to that I had one for almost 18 years before I retired from the honey business The most honey I ever extracted was 1300 lb out of that extractor took me a day great machine easy to work and easy to fix the other ones like date on motors are on the top hard to work on sometimes they get out of balance All that other good stuff this one's the easiest and fastest takes about 10 minutes to extract 20 frames

This video was awesome, thank you. Could I ask a couple other details? I actually put the exact same robbing screens on due to an event today. I could tell a lot of foragers were wanting to get back inside. Right now ive left them on, fully closed, there are clumps of bees outside...couldnt tell if the robbers were waiting, or if it was the house bees? Should I open one of the bee screen gates? Last year this happened to me, i feel like it went on several days...so worried if i open a gate, the robbers will just flood in through it first light?

What size holes are needed on the cap of the water bottle? We used a craft soldering tool and made several holes. We were wonder if they need to be smaller.

Great video. Easy to understand and it makes sense. I agree with having one for an insurance plan. At least try to catch your own swarm before they leave.

So that whole soffit was open from before? Nothing wrong with another swarm coming back so long as it's not the ones you got.
@BohemiaBees18 күн бұрын
No it must have been opened up many years ago and another hive removed because there were comb tracks. Unless the old colony was just destroyed by wax moths and then recently rebuilt.

No it depends on the flow. Bees can fill them fast but it depends on how strong your nectar flow is.

Can the frames be put in a dishwasher?
@BohemiaBees23 күн бұрын
Not sure why you would need to but I don’t see why not. The only thing to consider is the wax. Depending on how hot your dishwasher gets. If you have any wax leftover it could melt into the dishwasher drain and create a clog.

When you put them in the freezer, what do you put them in? I'm trying to figure out how to keep things clean and not sure how to keep my frames from getting moldy.
@BohemiaBees23 күн бұрын
We use a dedicated box freezer for our frames. But some beekeepers put them in a trash bag before putting in home freezer.
@jackierasmussen9796Ай бұрын
Love the swarm box! Do you have a template/directions to make one? Would love some of your attractant too😊 Jackie R.
Not as often as I had planned. Keeping those stocked is hard for a medium size operation like ours. Larger queen breeders still have success with them.

Thanks for getting back to me!! I opted the hard, long, and expensive route...building nucs, splitting from amazing colonies to get the first set of queens, then just starting 5 at a time...expand my nuc collection by 10 annually thereafter...slow, steady, growth. Thank you for helping!!
