@@ravingircey Beethoven wrote his own cadenzas for his concertos, but up until the "Emperor" came along, the performer was free to do whatever he or she wished.

For those of us whose appreciation for music is found only in how we respond to it and lack any knowledge of its complexities and more telling interpretations, Beethoven's 1st, 4th and 5th piano concertos are those which draw and impress us most.

Je ne me lasse pas d écouter cette merveille. La cadence du premier mouvement est surnaturelle, c est quoi ? Une fugue, à 3, 4 ou 5 voix ? on dirait une improvisation totale, un moment de grâce ultime... Et puis, le second mouvement,... le mot sublime est tellement timide, pour décrire un joyau comme celui là... Glenn Gould préférait l enregistrement, pour que, en cas de beauté exceptionnelle, elle soit accessible au plus grand nombre. C est une réussite totale, alors je n ai qu un mot ; Merci .

It's Gould's own cadenza. I think he was still in his teens when he wrote it.

Hard to listen to others after this - they all seem to plod. Here, the pace so effortless, no struggle. Such a light touch - it floats, flies. Get the impression he could have easily gone faster but not the orchestra.

What happens at 31:22 (3rd movement)? It suddenly took off in a frenzy (counterpoint improvisation) and carried Gould with it, even if it's for just 22 seconds? Or was it Gould who took off and carried Beethoven with him? This is the most exciting moment in all my listening experience.

Best is Gieseking/Rosbaud. Gould did not have serenity, but his cadenza is an extra treat.

Чувствуется, что Гленн очень любит просто нажимать на клавиши, и как можно быстрее - это главная задача. Бах, Бетховен, Шопен, кто там еще- всех под одну гребенку
