Allegretto, third movement from Piano Sonata No. 17, Op. 31/2
Wilhelm Kempff, piano (Live)
The Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2, was composed in 1801/02 by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is usually referred to as "The Tempest" (or Der Sturm in his native German), but this title was not given by him, or indeed referred to as such during his lifetime; instead, it comes from a claim by his associate Anton Schindler that the sonata was inspired by the Shakespeare play. However, much of Schindler's information is distrusted by classical music scholars. Renowned British music scholar, Donald Francis Tovey, in his authoritative book A Companion to Beethoven's Pianoforte Sonatas, states that "The story that Beethoven connected this sonata with The Tempest is evidently one of many such inventions by his biographer Anton Schindler". The third movement, in the key of D minor, is very moving, first flowing with emotion and then reaching a climax, before moving into an extended development section which mainly focuses on the opening figure of the movement, reaching a climax at measures 169-173. The recapitulation is preceded by an extensive cadenza-like passage of sixteenth notes for the right hand and the coda which follows is quite substantial, reaching what can be considered the climax of the movement at measure 381, a fortissimo falling chromatic scale.

I think only this interpretation sounds gentle, while others are played with more ferocity. So it really depends on who plays it, instead of this piece being inherently gentle.

I’m learning this piece now. It’s beautiful, so fierce yet so gentle at the same time. Rhythmically, this piece is not too difficult, it’s the speed, the dynamics and perhaps the perpetual motion that makes it really difficult and somewhat technically demanding. Nothing some good old Czerny and Hanon can’t fix.
@michaelwisse9284

I'm learning the piece also. its no so difficult as I thougt it would be however to play it as a mobilum perpetual is very difficult. The piece should be played perhaps "Aus einem Guss" as the germanswould call it. Your comment is helpfull to me. Your remark so fierce yet so gentle at the same time is very striking! We find this a lot in Beethovens works. He was a tiger sometimes gentle and sometimes ferocies and combined these qualitys. I also think that studying Czerny and Hanon can be very helpfull. The are underrated when it comes to mastering the piano . Schule de Fingerfertigkeit of Czerny containes good technicall training and also pieces that a musically are stunning beautifull. Some examples are shown above

Hi Emily, I think it is a difficult piece to play really well. I've been watching Valentina Lisitsa's KZfaq post and every time I see more places where she slips a little bit. Irina Lankova is one of my favourite pianists and I'd love to hear her play this. I'm no expert though, I just listen a lot!

Kempff always seems to drip honey all over his keys before he plays - there is this soft dream-scape vanilla sound that resonates with any of his Beethoven interpretation that others simply fail to capture - his notes seem to merge into one endless stream of floating fantasia

I'm learning this piece currently and I can't even imagine playing it for so many people and the way that Beethoven used such intense dynamics and the notations makes it much more difficult to play so that definitely demand a lot of practice on my side. Thanks so much for this beautiful performance and thanks to Beethoven for this. Thanks for the beautiful post!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖

@hawran5433 10 жыл бұрын
this is a beatifull piece of music, it's really a storm, maybe its not so clear from this interpretation, because he dont do there so many little dynamics changes as are writen in the sheet, but its about Beethovens inner fight, he wants to give everything up but sudenly he gains will to fight, then he loses his strenght again and want to give everything up, and so on. Its too bad that so many people see the storm that is outside and not the one inside.

You hate that it became a fad? Aside from the fact that it is a very beautiful piece of music that deserves to be shared with the world. Unfortunately mainstream media constricts people to garbage to make money. Personally I applaud the producer for incorporating this into the movie and enlightening people. Self-righteous and arrogant people who criticize the "newbies" are the same ones who will ultimately kill the genre and it will be forgotten about.
