Last week I wrote about sonata No. 13 that, for me, it was the true hidden gem of the cycle. The fault for its being a hidden gem lies at least partially with its sister, the incommensurably more popular ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, Op. 27, No. 2. The nickname was coined by Ludwig Rellstab, a German poet and influential music critic, some five years after Beethoven’s death, but its colossal popularity certainly dated back to Beethoven’s lifetime. Even without a nickname, the starkly painted landscape of its first movement, the forlorn melody, the quiet grief embodied in the accompanying triplets, the fateful descent of the bass line - all those gripped the imagination of the listeners. A middle movement of exquisite, fragile beauty, and a dark whirlwind of a finale with its rage and despair strengthened the impact that much more. And the fact that the first movement is relatively technically undemanding could only increase the work’s popularity.
Seen as part of Op. 27, the ‘Moonlight’ is like a dark shadow born in the afterglow of No. 13’s light. To No. 13’s myriad of moods it juxtaposes a single-minded unity of colour and expression, concentrated and powerful. It contrasts No. 13’s loosely joined sections with a linear progression of defined, clearly structured movements. And to the wealth of positive, kind and benevolent emotions radiating from No. 13, it answers with a uniquely perceptive exploration of the darker corners of personal feeling.
Years after the publication of the ‘Moonlight’, people were still talking about it, leading Beethoven to grumble to his student Carl Czerny that surely he had written better things! I am not so sure; different things, undoubtedly. But better? If the highest evocative artistry expressed in such a way as to garner universal appeal for over two centuries is our yardstick, then I would say probably not. We are enchanted and entranced by the ‘Moonlight’, we relate to it with a deep part of our soul, and I believe it will continue to touch and affect us for a long time to come.

Beautiful! You've brought this sonata back to life for me. I played this for my piano diploma exam in 2009 and I think overplayed it after all the practice and concerts ... and did not play this again for about 10 years! But have just recently started revisiting it. I also practiced it just yesterday. I'm noticing how you are bringing out very subtle melodic lines and themes. Just awesome.

This is the most sublime version of Moonlight for me. I listened to many versions by legends your interpretation just absolutely evoked Glimmer of Hope/Light on cloudy night with the 1st movement most beautifully♥️🙏🏻

Thank you for sharing your talent as a performer and as a writer of Beethoven's passions. I always felt very strongly about these two sonatas, the Moonlight and the Appassionata, but to be able to put words on the feelings they awaken is awesome. Both are extremely rich in emotions and you are one performer who can make people feel every single note of the composition.

There are many interpreters considered legends which stick strictly to the music scores, but don't add anything new to a piece (which I think distances you from being a strictly interpreter). Just like Evgeny Kissin (who is my personal all times favorite, specially when young), you add your own flavor to this master pieces (adding certain details that nobody else would add), and you do it in such a way that you transmit every single thing you feel to me as well. I was lucky I saw you facebook page recently, and I am extremely happy about it. I am a fan.

Brilliant performance Boris. Moonlight is one of my favorite Beethoven sonata and i love your play. Espacially 3rd movement ! Some pianists are play faster then the original Beethoven BPM and i hate them. I can hear each notes clearly. Congrats one more time. Subscribed your channel and i would like to listen Waldstein Sonata from you. Best Wishes.

There is a unity here from the first movement - a funeral march for sure - to the last where the tension builds without pause to the last note. The first movement is bleak, but still beautiful. Bravo!

@@flyonthewalllondon Thank you! Glad I was polite. So it's art - your close focus on the performer - not accident. Your voice at the start of Op2/2 as well no doubt. Classical almost always goes for the pure sound. Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen was accident.

I hate this sonata, but you had some really interesting things to say with this recording. I never thought I'd willingly click on another moonlight recording but I knew you'd do something special so I just had to. The first movement was not boring in your hands, the second lacked any sense of trite benign noodling. The third movement had interesting character and as always your tonal pallette was sublime. At your suggestion I will listen to 13 and this one back to back later this week.

Very beatiful! Perhaps, the left hand should have a greater role in the Adagio. Octaves and chords create the necessary "pathos" in this movement. In my opinion, of course. Thanks you very much! (My english is not good. Sorry)

Not bad, but i think this should be played faster and not so legato-serious, a lot more playful. But not bad for a modern interpretation… This piece is extremely difficult to understand musically.
