Yes, very dynamic and passionate. She can produce any piano pieces as exactly written. She has a very immense ability of retelling the story.

I agree. Blown away by her playing. I wish she had played more Bach. As far as I can tell on KZfaq, she plays one each on the 6 English and French suites and partitas. They're all heavenly. Her English Suite No. 3 is perfection -- along with her Schubert, Mozart, Chopin....

Very expressive, sensitive and melodic.Lovely dynamic range. There's no doubting it; Maria lets Beethoven's score speak for itself - no selfish melodramatic demonstrations as so many pianists do when trying to place their mark on this sonata. The third movement just flows and the gentle parts are so gently executed. Beautiful! This is truly music for music's sake. Thanks for uploading.

This is a good reference. I don't always agree with her view of certain music, especially her Chopin, but here, listening to the Allegretto (last movement) of The Tempest, I'm glad to hear her not "banging" the keyboard as so many pianists do on the last movement of The Tempest. A very nice performance.

If you have the Schnabel editions (or even the Schirmers edition), the Beethoven piano sonatas, they are split between 2 books. This one is the last sonata in Book 1.

I just have 2 reservations: The 1st is the speed of the opening arpeggio in the 1st&2nd movements. I feel they're too rapid. My 2nd reservation are the turns in the 2nd movement (see 10th bar). Beethoven was very specific; an 8th note tied to a 32nd note followed by a triplet of 64th notes, ending in two ascending 32nd notes; the 1st of these last 2 notes is not a dotted 32nd followed by a 64th as Maria plays it. Listen to Richter & Pollini play it & you'll see. I still adore Pires' performance!

The opus 31. no. 2 "Tempest" is the 17th sonata by order of listing. By order of completion, this would be ranked 20th. The opus 49 no. 1 and 2 Sonatas 19 and 20) were composed five or six years earlier, and Beethoven completed Opus 31. no. 3 (listed number 18) before he completed this one.

Er, well...it is the 17th out of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas. It was published as part of his Op. 31, which is a set of three piano sonatas. It is the second sonata in that set, hence "Op. 31, No. 2". It' really not that complicated.
