The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim performs Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Berlin Philharmonic. It's supported by singers Angela Denoke, Waltraud Meier, Burkhard Fritz and René Pape. The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is a very special ensemble: It is made up of young Israeli and Arab musicians and is campaigning for a peaceful solution to the Middle East conflict. The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which was founded in 1999, gives concerts all over the world. Proceeds from the concert in Berlin went to the Barenboim-Said Academy, which supports musical education programs.
The 9th Symphony in D minor op. 125 is the last finished symphony by the composer Ludwig van Beethoven. The work was premiered in Vienna on May 7, 1824 in the presence of Beethoven, who was already completely deaf and was a complete success. The fourth movement is also known as "Ode to Joy" and is one of the most popular songs in the world. Since 1985, the main theme of the
last movement has been the official European anthem.

The world is in such turmoil now. Everywhere there is hate and anger. Beethoven promised a better future but only if people would just stop and listen. Here, there is no hate, no injustice, no war, no anger just joy and peace. It's a reminder of what we are in essence when we listen to our hearts. It's a reminder that we still have some way to go but in the meantime, I can sit here and listen to this beautiful majestic music in peace knowing for this moment that future is now.

Barenboim has issued a statement saying that he is stepping down due to having been diagnosed with a severe neurological disease. It broke my heart to see a legend make such an announcement. God bless you Daniel.

Our daughter is 8 and has severe autism. She almost non-verbal yet she seems to understand this piece. It helped her redirect from having a loud screaming behavior. This piece expresses so much about the human condition without words.

Autism is hard to deal with. Might I recommend when they are screechy or clearly overwhelmed, a dark quiet room can help. Because on average autistic people persevere 8 times as much stimulation. So lights and sound are the biggest enemy. Hope this helps.

excerpts form "Beethoven's Ninth: Reactions vary over the centuries" When he conducted the premiere, Beethoven couldn't hear a note of it. Few in the audience knew he was deaf until the music ended, and he continued to wave his arms. He had to be turned toward the audience to see the tumultuous applause. Beethoven's Ninth was not a runaway best seller when it was first performed in 1824 and even throughout the 19th Century. "Monstrous," thundered a respected critic of Beethoven's day. "...very much like Yankee Doodle," sniffed a Providence, R.I. newspaper in 1868. "Unspeakable cheapness," declared Boston's Musical Record in 1899.

Beethoven once told a Prince, "Prince, what you are, you are through chance and birth; what I am, I am through my own labor. There are many princes and there will continue to be thousands more, but there is only one Beethoven." So I'm of the opinion that were he to be asked on his thoughts of his music being played and celebrated nearly 200 years later, he would say something to the effect of "As it should be!"

Musician/comedian/etc Bill Bailey mentions this in one of his comedy shows. Everybody remembers these songs. People who survive a plane crash and are stranded in the mountains for months aren't singing trash pop by [Generic Boy Band]. Even stuff as recent as Gloria Gaynor has more lasting power than what you hear coming out these days. But this? This wasn't just some ear-worm cash-grab in its day. This was a genius showing off. Which I'm okay with, really.

It's such a beautiful moment @ 1:01:50 when the conductor relaxes for a few seconds and looks over the orchestra with such happiness and pride and peace like all of the rehearsals and hard work and years of practice and joy, sweat and tears - everything - everything came together at that one moment, that culmination of the beauty of humanity and it's just such a cool thing to see. 🙏🏼

I was visiting the most beautiful tropical cloud forest in Costa Rica. A place that will die out and turn into a desert land in about 30 years due to climate change...And I became a sad man...Randomly I came to see this video, read your comment...Why should we live in despair? He heard in his head. When asked how he thought up all this music. He said "I don't. It comes from the heavens." He also had serious drinking problem. Over 200 yrs. Later everyday someplace in the world someone plays his music.. thanks Ludwig ! Love you

you may have a spiritual experience listening to this symphony (as many of us do), but it IS secular music. It is not religious music. It is music about the triumph of the then revolutionary bourgeoisie over the ordered and preordained forces of musical classicism and socioeconomic feudalism.

I do, too. Every. Single. Time. I remember listening to the piece in the car on the 10th anniversary of the Berlin wall coming down. I was then, as I am now, in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never wanted to be home in Berlin as much as I did at that moment.

He was very deep - transported, and in an altered state by the finish. I have never seen such devotion to a piece in a conductor. As if it was only ever to be performed once and this was that one performance. Exquisite.

Beethoven's ninth is one of my all-time favorite classical pieces. I have listened to Ode to Joy frequently during the past year and a half as I have battled cancer and other health issues. It has helped me through some rough times. I could listen to the 9th every day!

I absolutely love what this orchestra can do for music and for humanity. I hope these young musicians realize what role they can play in bringing peace to such a troubled part of the world. Daniel Barenboim is a visionary genius. I remember seeing him conduct the Berlin Philharmonic and then walk across the street to a different venue and play tango. It was brilliant.

I loved this performance of "The Ninth" for a few reasons. First, the music by Beethoven is brilliant. Second, the performances by the musicians and singers was fantastic! And third, I so very much enjoyed the camera work that showed the emotions of the all the performers - especially the conductor, Daniel Barenboim.. That is really living in the moment. Thanks for sharing this wonderful music.

One of the greatest musical works ever composed. Never ceases to amaze, the scope and imagination of Beethoven, who had long since lost his hearing. What a remarkable human being he must have been. Growing up with a bullying, drunken father and looking like a neglected boy at school, piano prodigy, early compositions, already head of the family aged 18, the deaths in infancy of four of his siblings, being a young court musician, the mood swings, the denial of love in order to dedicate himself to his music, the battle for custody of his nephew, the political upheavals, the deafness. A genius who is my co-favourite composer with Mozart. This Symphony no 9 once discovered early in life becomes a lifelong friend. I also love the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th symphonies and the piano sonatas, the later ones take us off on a spiritual journey. Would love to hear what everyone's favourite Beethoven works are, in addition to this one of course !

Hi. I really resonate with your answer. As I just found out about Beethoven and his inspiring, magnificent and beautiful legacy, I really love to hear sonatas and symphonies I didn´t hear before. Right now I was totally amazed by this piece, sonata no. 23 (appassionata) and the Moonlight Sonata. I also started to play the piano and the first piece I learned was "Für Elise" which I also enjoy. I am thankful beyond words to have the possibility to enjoy his genius masterpieces. It´s amazing to see that one can overcome great difficulties in life and use all of his suffering and pain for something greater and good. Thank you for sharing your opinion and your impuls. The most incredible thing about the Ninth Symphony is that, after so many bad TV commercials, so much stupid advertising, so much misuse that has been made of it, every time you listen to it again the miracle occurs of getting excited as if it were the first time. time you listen to it.

We can only suspect how hard it was for Beethoven to compose this masterpiece symphony without hearing any notes. He presented his finished score to friends only to tune the volume of the various instruments.

However, he heard the pitch of all the notes in his mind. Volume is only to make the balance between notes better, but the sound itself is the same, whether it's loud or quiet.

@@silverlinings3946 Just imagine having to orchestrate so many instruments, balancing the French horns and percussions, yet keeping violins expressive throughout the adagio's musical phrasing.... A true masterpiece: a first choral symphony which could not fail ! As an example, consider the same difficulty in painting. Late in his life, Monet lost part of his vision, due to cataract & glaucoma. Yet, he still had to paint to make ends meet. His colours became more agressive and weren't as delicate as those of his youth. Somehow, he did not managed his visual handicap.

I would love to attend this symphony orchestra classical music. I'm asking myself how one man can compose this sophisticated music? Amazing. It's so rich. My brain is composing all kind of motion pictures while this music is playing in the background. Peace, happiness, misery, love, heartbreak and victory over evil. I don't know Why I am crying?

I am proud thatcthe Germans were such incredible composers. My father loved classical music and made me enjoy this music. I think it is coming back. The Italians and French also had great composers.

So true! Right now I'm listening to it while contemplating the times; the world's pandemic, racism in America, the political division that we face, the horrible insurrection, corruption, & dishonesty that we've recently seen. This is a time like no other, & my generation, the "generation x" has seen many things that mankind has never seen. Yet this piece is so soothing to me as I continue on with all of the bravery that I have. I stay strong with my head held high, ready to face the world in 2021.

Many of my high school teachers fought in World War II. One survived Guadalcanal, another bombing in the 8th Air Force. In the 60’s as their students we had no idea what they had endured. I remember all of them as gifted teachers. I now know that they were heroes as well.

On May 7, 1824, Ludwig van Beethoven premiered his 9th and last symphony called Chorale, in Vienna. Here we are, today May 7, 2024, some 200 years later, God Bless Ludwig, and what would be the most powerful, spiritual and brutal musical work taught to the world. But if that were not enough, every time in my life that I lose my reason, my conscience, the motivation to even live, I can never help but hear the Ode to Joy reverberating. And although I don't express it, I always break into tears of happiness remembering every word and every letter that the choir makes great.

Keep in mind that the musicians will keep playing almost no matter what the conductor does. It is almost as if you were waving a stick in front of your stereo. It is a common misconception that the conductor is somehow "playing" the orchestra like a piano. The conductor's main job is as a rehearsal coach. By the time you get to the concert his job is mostly done. Many of them put on a good show at concerts and some of them are inspiring the musicians to play their best. Most of them have oversized egos and take as much of the credit as people will give them.

@@Browne7100 Are you a conductor? Or have you worked under many different conductors or attended rehearsals with some of the great conductors as I have? My point is that most people overestimate the importance of the conductor. They usually have the biggest egos and will take all the credit and are not necessarily the most accomplished musicians. Your"wrong answer" response lacks nuance and shows a lack of experience with the orchestral dynamic.

@@Browne7100 One of THE most impressive conductors I ever witnessed was Claudio Abbado. He had real leadership skills and possessed humility, which was unusual in this big ego field. His approach brought out the musicians dedication and love of the music, and they worked together to bring about amazing performances, with everyone on board to bring about the best possible performance. This kind of synergy is rare in the human experience and when tapped into is transmitted to the audience as a rare, uplifting and entrancing experience. There are only a few conductors that can bring this kind of intention to their work, inspiring their team to create magic.

Yes, Muti could bring out so much of the CSO. I went to two performances of Mozart piano cto #23 and Mahler 5th sym. Stunning, it sounded like two distinctly different orchestras between the pieces!

This was an amazing performance. But prefer the Orchestra's version during the 2012 BBC Proms. For one thing, the choir was almost 3 times as big, lending a lot more power. IMO (But the 1st flute is the same.)

@@spikespa5208 Our CSO was also blessed with Georg Solti for a number of years until his death. He took a second-rate orchestra and the rest is music history. But Barenboim was the consummate teacher.

Recuerdo al hermano Ornelio Novelli, profesor del CEP San José - Hermanos Maristas de Huacho, cuando en 1977 nos enseñó a cantar el Himno a la alegría. Soy un arquitecto chileno que ama la música clásica desde niño cuando escuchaba los discos 33 1/3 que ponía mi madre. Daniel Barenboim es un artista impresionante, tanto como pianista o como profesor, o como director de orquesta...pero lo más maravilloso que pienso que ha realizado es la idea de crear una orquesta de jóvenes israelíes y árabes como esta West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. Interpretar a Wagner en Israel, pese a muchas oposiciones, demostró que la música es un arte independiente de la política y que había que ser más abiertos respecto a ello. Lo admiro profundamente y creo que no ha recibido los elogios que debiera por lo que ha logrado.

(IMO/for me) it is the most powerful, amazing, magnificent, complex pieces of music ever written. As a professional musician , I can tell you , it's NOT that impossible to imagine. And even more - when you become deaf , your inner hearing becomes sharper by far, cz nothing disturbs you from the outside. You can write, sitting at the table, going somewhere in chariot and even sleeping - you just need to listen to your inner voice. And some composers who didn't have such a problem, still didn't need the instrument to compose the music - for example Mahler used to write , when he walked in the mountains.

Beethoven was so original with the beginning of this symphony. Nobody started a symphony with that kind of soft dramatic build into a powerful explosion of energy. The first three minutes of this masterpiece inspired countless musicians from all genres of music for generations. Way to go Der Spagnol!

Barenboim's masterful conducting of this extraordinarily talented group of musicians shows the crown jewel of music in perfect light. Beethoven was deaf when he complsed this, but surely he heard this performance!
