I was so impressed with Moscow that it did occur to me to move there, especially if USA keeps getting screwed up the way it is. However I simply cannot wrap my head around moving to a foreign country where I don't speak the language fully, and knowing that I probably wouldn't be able to find work in my field. Lots of respect to those who emigrate to and then succeed in a foreign country.

Been to both Moscow and my beloved Piter several times, walked alone in unknown areas also by night - while my husband was on his laptop working - and there was not a split second that I felt unsafe. I felt totally safe at ANY point in time, also at night alone as a woman, felt actually surrounded by friendly and helpful Russians in these beautiful, clean towns, full of culture and style. And фёдор, who the hell would drink with some unknown shady company - be it in Russia or anywhere else on the planet??

For me Russia is one of the best countries in the world - no glyphosate in food, lots of organic stuff, no smoking in cafes, restaurants, jazz clubs, great concert halls where great Russian composers are played, Rachmaninov, Lyapunov, Tschaikowsky, Skrjabin, Shostakovich... LOVE it!!!

In Moscow I saw 2-4 security guards at every Metro entrance which I was surprised by. They scan people with a metal detector as they go by, and if you have a backpack sometimes they will make you place it in a device that scans it, or put it on a conveyor like at the airport. They didn't always stop me, but I had to do it a few times. Security was in practically every building. At least in the center of Moscow. Museums, places of worship, and shopping centers. I didn't see a ton of police like you see in New York when they're all standing around, but I saw police a few times and I saw their cars driving by (including unmarked Mercedes police cars - interesting). I also saw what I presume was an off-duty police officer in a cafe; he was wearing regular clothes but he had a leather holster for a Makarov pistol on his belt. I felt very safe 100% of the time when I was in Moscow. And I traveled solo only knowing a little bit of the language. I encourage everyone to go.

I was in Moscow 2 weeks ago and it’s very nice and safe. Although if you don’t know Russian you will have trouble communicating. Hardly anyone there speaks English unfortunately. Thankfully I know some enough to speak with people lol. I didn’t come across another American during my stay there lol most of not all of them are just other Russians from other places es of Russia. I did get a few stares here and there when they heard me speaking in English. But nothing sketchy. Overall it was awesome and the people were friendly despite not knowing English they tried their best ahah. Will definitely go back since my visa is valid for 3 years. Oh and I will add that I went for food at 3 am and didn’t really feel scared tbh. But I was near the center of Moscow so I’m just talking about the center of Moscow I don’t know about the outskirts lol. If you’re going near the center it’s completely safe and over cool. I loved my stay there.

I've lived in Russia for more than twenty years. I've never been pickpocketed or got anything stolen otherwise. Even though for 5 years I've traveled in rush-hour metro. However, I keep the most valuable items (wallet, keys, phone) in my front jeans pockets, that might be the reason.
@vixregon
@vixregon 2 жыл бұрын
But if you nervous about it, just follow a few rules. 1. Keep your documents and phone in these pocket which you can feel or you can easily see. Most pickpocketing occurs when things are not under the control of a person and can be easily stolen. 2. Do not show a large amount of cash, take a convenient and small amount of money before leaving, or use a card. Criminals are adept at tracking down their victims among lone tourists. In general, the less you stand out in the crowd, the less likely you are to become a victim of a criminal. 3. Avoid quiet, dark places. Especially when you're alone. These rules are universal for any country, but in general, this is an over-precautionary measure. In large cities like Moscow or St. Piter, such bad things are rare, and tourists usually come either in a group or to friends, and there is practically no chance of running into big problem.
@williamhancock8065

Moscow is shutting down now as Covid is running wild. Some measures taken in Piter also. Russia is only 31% vaccinated and few people are wearing masks. Delta is an issue. Now is probably not a great time for a trip. One of my friends is a manager at a large hotel in Piter. Normally her hotel has a lot of guests from Europe. Now very few. Mostly guests from other places in Russia. Europeans are staying away.

It depends on what kind of people, but it's quite normal for us that you can be invited to drink, especially in the village. However, they usually do not offer vodka, as many people think, but tea. If the people who invited you for a drink behave normally and look normal, then you can come in. I hardly ever hear anything on this topic, but I feel it's very important for some travelers. Be very careful with drugs. The police is a lot more strict about them than in most European countries. Avoiding them altogether is the best option. Possession is illegal, the amounts (weight) that turn a administrative offence (basically, just a fine) into a criminal offence are miniscule for pretty much everything but weed. If you get caught, you probably should try to solve the issue "on the spot" (pay, a lot). Be careful don't offer it clearly, make sure nobody, but the policemen hear you, and there are no recording devices around (most police cars have internal cameras).
@vixregon
@vixregon 2 жыл бұрын
It may work one day, but more often than not it will end up at the police station with unpleasant consequences. It should also be said that the police in Russia will behave harshly in case of arrest and will not hesitate to use force. Therefore, even if soft drugs are permitted in one way or another in your country, it is better to forget about it in Russia. There will be fewer problems.
@MrPaukann
@MrPaukann 2 жыл бұрын
@@vixregon, more often than not, it works. Policmen know it's a harmless crime with real jailtime, so they don't feel too bad earning some money. And in a lot of cases, they track down consumers specifically to ask them for money. Consequences can suck, but it's worth the risk, because the stakes are pretty high. Dude, have you ever seen videos of arrests by police not on political demonstrations? What are you talking about? They "hesitate" using force for like half an hour, just endlessly trying to talk everyone into compliance. Sure, it's better to forget about all the substances everywhere, but people still end up taking them. That's why we should mention all of this.
@vixregon
@vixregon 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrPaukann well, you right, but a bribe is not a panacea, and it is wrong to instill the idea that it can solve everything. In any case, I agree with you that the topic of drugs should be brought up and told about it. Seriously guys, who reads us. Do not. Forget about all this for a while, the risk is not justified.

You do have to be cautious about outwardly showing affection and be very cautious about strangers who might seem overtly friendly online or on the street. Both situations can end up in violence. Probably not a good idea to go to an abandoned factory in Krasniy Treugolnik (Huge abandoned area in Saint Petersburg) at night to have a drankard rave party with people you've just met on tinder. Othervise you have more choises to be a subject of a crime if you recieve a "phone call from Sberbank". Guns aren't prohibited in Russia. I think it's a matter of perspective, if you're from the US, then yeah, they're less common, but if you're from somewhere like the UK or Japan, they're a lot more common. They sell these "self-defence" (traumatic) pistols in Russia that shoot plastic bullets, I'm not talking about airsoft guns, they actually work like real guns and they look exactly the same. There are various types of weapon that are banned in places like the UK that are freely available in Russia. There have been few US businessmen detained as a result of big political games and high level corruption in Russia. There are also 450 Russian citizens imprisoned for their political activities and dozens killed. With that being said, I don't believe police or government harass tourists, including Americans. This is not something common.

It is in the USA that Russian emigrants are constantly arrested on false charges of espionage. And that is why the United States falsely accuses Russia of this. The thief always shouts loudest of all, "Stop the thief!" And the false anti-Russian propaganda constantly tells lies about Russia. No literate person believes in this lie.

The basic problem with going to Russia if you're American is that Russians were banned from working at the embassy, and the Russian govt. is being awkward about granting visas to State Dept. employees so now there are no consular services for Americans in Russia. So obviously the State Dept. advises against going to any country where they are unable to offer assistance.

Those statistics differ by county. In Russia they count so called home crimes, when two "friends" get drunk, got quarrel and stab one another in the kitchen. In USA you have more chance to be shot in the street.

@@nataliak2693I'm totally willing to accept that Chicago is perhaps more dangerous than Moscow, but overall, the murder rate in Russia is way higher than the United States. The type of weapon used is irrelevant. I'd take 500 people getting shot to death over 501 getting stabbed to death, let alone 1000

@@ZombieLicorice The number of prisoners in the United States is higher than in China. American prisons are overcrowded. American police are killing people on the street without trial. There are areas and cities in the USA that even the police are afraid to enter. And even if the police patrol criminal areas, they do it without leaving the car. No one can count the number of murders in the United States. The USA is a criminal country. But in Russia, the police control every street and every house. Therefore, crime in Russia is much lower. And all normal people feel completely safe in Russia.

@@user-si2dr1pn3p we have more prisoners than China for reasons like China's frequent use of the death penalty. It's a state secret but NGO estimate it is thousands per year. Russia has a pretty similar per capita rate of prisoners to us, (RU 0.62%, US 0.74%). I think you are lumping in giant cities that might as well be their own countries with the whole of the United States. Where I live the murder rate is 2 per 100k. So safer than Belarus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Albania, etc.. (and where I live, over half the population owns guns). Please don't let the city states taint your image of America, we agree that they suck.

@@jolevangelista, no, it only speaks about your complexes and that your knowledge of Russia is limited to BBC reports. And judging Russia by the BBC reports is a big mistake, because this is not information, but crudely made propaganda. The Russian government and society DO NOT climb into your bed, house or nightclub. But the Russian government and society consider unacceptable LGBT agitation among minors who, due to their youth, are not able to fully think with their heads and are guided by emotions. I'm russian too. I've never been a victim of a crime. The stories of crime I remember are a phone stolen from my drunk friend during a taxi ride and my classmate was robbed like 10 years ago when he was walking alone in a park at night in a bad part of town. I've been in quite a few cities/towns in Russia, felt safe everywhere. Although, there are some regions you should be very careful in (Tyva, for example).

Yeah, like in another country, in Russia we have unsafe place where you shouldn't go. Usually it is small town, villages and etc. Just like in US you can be shooted on "gangsta street" in Russia you can meet "gopnics" and murders. But this applies to tourists and locals alike, and basic rules of conduct such as "do not go to deserted places at night", "do not drink with strangers" and so on will protect you from problems.

Don't parade around in public like a clown, and you'll be fine. Why is this such as issue for people? If you are a man walking around in a bikini or making out with another man in public, then yes, you will have some problems. But keep it to yourself, don't be an exhibitionist, and you will be welcome just like anyone else.

Yeah, while you look normal and don't demonstrate it on public - no one cares about you. Of course, our old people don't understand it, and in dealing with them you may encounter rudeness. But nothing more, just an unpleasant conversation. And for an already aggressive-minded person, this will be a reason for an attack. Exactly the same as provoking a "gangster" in other countries.
